Be purposeful and attentive when you are eating. Eating while distracted is adding an extra challenge to managing portions and preventing you from fully enjoying the meal and the experience of eating. Make time, step away from the computer or TV, chew slowly, catch up with friends and family. Eating mindfully can positively impact many health outcomes.
The grind ain’t always fun, but it’s the only way to truly enjoy the rewards of all your hard work. Nothing worth it is free!
Research is so critically important to investigating and revealing new approaches to care. I’ve been hearing about this elusive cure for diabetes for over 20 years… wouldn’t it be nice to have it confirmed and applied in our lifetime!!
Based on yesterday’s post sharing the benefits of incorporating mustard into your recipes, we offer a recipe for homemade Dijon. For those managing blood pressure, hypertension and/or other heart related issues, reduce the salt content or substitute with a salt alternative.
Doesn’t everybody love a good mustard?!
It common for people to embark on a weight loss journey as a New Year’a resolution. Managing weight is one component of health, but is best done in partnership with a healthcare professional. Remember: if you can’t sustain it, it won’t last and cycling can be more detrimental to health than enjoying life where you’re at.
Happy New Year to our followers. We hope you’ve enjoyed your holidays and stayed healthy! Here’s a great tip to start off 2022 the right way! 🎉
Happy 🎄 Holidays!
When it comes to healthy and wellness, the evidence is always evolving. Planning a balanced, healthy meal starts with portion sizes and considers the frequency of meals and how often you are having different foods. It’s not always about ‘good’ vs. ‘bad’ 🥛
Here’s a recipe to try out that takes advantage of all the benefits of ginger listed in our post, yesterday. Enjoy!
Ginger has long been a popular home remedy for ‘tummy troubles’, but also adds a lot of flavour to recipes, too! Ginger helps reduce discomfort and diarrhea, and has also been linked to improved blood sugar management.
During the holiday season, it’s important to enjoy time spent with loved ones. Inevitably, part of that time will be spent indulging in sweets and treats. Enjoy yourself, but keep portion sizes and frequency in mind. You don’t have to deny yourself, but do be mindful of how much and how often you’re enjoying holiday foods. Check your blood sugars often and be prepared to make adjustments or give corrections to keep blood sugars as stable as possible through the season.
Mistakes are only lessons to be learned to help you grow and light your path.
Given the jump in numbers thanks to the Omicron variant, we thought it timely to post this update… vaccines will not guarantee that you do not “catch COVID”, but they are proven to help to prevent more severe outcomes. Booster shots are now available for everyone over 18 who has had their 2nd dose at least 3 months prior. Do what you can to protect yourself and others this holiday season. Be safe, wear your mask, wash your hands and stay home when not absolutely necessary to venture out. All the best from T1D Academy until next year!
Super easy and flavourful meal, side or snack that cooks up quick! 🫑 Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments below!!
Bell peppers make a great snack and also work well in many recipes to add colour and variety to meals. Their antioxidant qualities help to reduce chronic disease risk and the vitamin C helps us to absorb more iron from foods to prevent deficiencies and keep our energy up. 🫑
Make sure you’re prepared if/when you get sick. Make a plan with your doctor about how to manage your medications, keep extra supplies on hand and be sure to stay hydrated 💦
Don’t stop trying…
the reward is worth the effort!
Hippocrates said: “Thy medicine is the food.” EVERYTHING the body needs to be healthy can be derived from our diet. The definition of ‘diet’ is the foods we eat, not those we restrict or stigmatize. We need to get back to nourishing through foods and taking the focus off ‘magic pills’. Of course there are chronic disease states that impede our ability to function optimally or absorb nutrients effectively that require medications, but even those circumstances benefit greatly from a healthy, balanced diet!
Give today’s recipe for roasted tomatoes a try. Roasting vegetables drizzled with extra virgin olive oil is a great way to increase your intake of important vitamins and minerals as well as omega-3 (healthy fats) for heart health!
Tomatoes are a favourite for many and a staple in a bunch of traditional recipes. They offer benefits to the body that help to fight off free radicals, reducing risk of certain cancers, can help to lower blood pressure and have been evidenced to reduce all-cause mortality by up to 20%! They’re super delish, too!! 🍅
Today wraps National Diabetes Awareness Month. We will continue our efforts to educate and advocate all year ‘round, but wanted to leave you with one last post that will hopefully help ease the financial burden of surviving Type 1 Diabetes. Thank you to all who have been reading and sharing our posts. 💙
November is Diabetes Awareness Month.
We cannot acknowledge NDAM without talking more about insulin. Without insulin, people with Type 1 Diabetes would not survive.
