Good news so far. Cautiously optimistic that Ont Gov't have agreed to direct formal negotiations with the Ontario Association of Optometrists. So job action has been paused. We will be working hard to work through our huge backlog of patients. Please be patient and courteous with our staff as we work through this. Thanks very much.

Ontario in standoff with optometrists over exam fees | Globalnews.ca Optometrists began withholding services covered by the province's health plan on Sept. 1, after warning they would no longer offer them at a financial loss.
OAO President Sheldon Salaba has given his PERSONAL cell phone number to Minister of Health Christine Elliott to get back to the table. Simply give him a call. It's been over 2 1/2 months (Aug 29/21) since the Ministry last communicated. It's not the optometrists not willing to come to the table.

Thank you Dr. Gila Martow, PC MPP-Thornhill for having the courage to speak up for what is right and explaining exactly how disrespectful the government has been towards Optometrists.
The TRUTH COMES OUT. This letter from a PC MPP explains what the government really has been doing as they try to shift the blame onto us Optometrists!
It's time for the government to finally fix sustainable eye care for seniors, children and those with eye care issues (eg. diabetics, cataracts, etc.)
We deeply regret not seeing our patients (seniors & diabetics for their eye issues and schoolchildren for their learning) but we are really fighting for the future for all Ontarians.

November 11th--Let us not forget
Here are the real facts about negotiations with the Ontario Gov't:
The entire 2021-22 Ontario Health budget is $69.8B. Is vision worth more 0.2% of our health care budget? Call Ford, Elliott & MPPs
FACT:
The entire Ontario Health budget in 2021-2022 is $69.8B. Optometry is currently 0.2% of the funding (that is, less than 1/2 of one percent).
In 1989, the Ontario government paid $39.15 for an eye exam. In 2021, 32 years later, they pay an average of $44.65.
This government is making excuses and letting seniors and children, diabetics suffer while they want more time to study the operating costs (when from Dec 2020 til Aug 2021 and counting, the government declined such a study).
Ontario’s optometrists are ready and willing to protect our patients' long-term access to care. To help all Ontarians receive access to high-quality sustainable eyecare, call/email/contact:
Premier Doug Ford [email protected] 416-325-1941

MPP Ajax Rod Phillips [email protected] 905-427-2060
MPP Pickering Peter Bethlenfalvy, [email protected] 905-509-0336
Who is really telling the truth? Why Ontario optometrists can't trust the Ontario government after 32 years, despite empty promises to fix sustainable eye care for seniors, children and those with eye care issues (eg. diabetics, cataracts, etc.)
We deeply regret not seeing our patients (seniors & diabetics for their eye issues and schoolchildren for their learning) but we are really fighting for the future for all Ontarians.

BREAKING: is KNOWINGLY underfunding the eye care they claim to cover, expecting the working class to subsidize the cost.
This is not a sustainable system, and not how health care should work.
IN RESPONSE TO MOH CHRISTINE ELLIOTT'S NEGOTIATING TABLE: (after radio silence from the Ministry of Health from Dec 2020 to Aug 2021, just prior to Sept 1, 2021 OHIP Withdrawal)
In late August, the OAO accepted an invitation to mediation with the Ontario government to fight for high-quality eye care for our patients. After only two days, it became abundantly clear that the Ministry of Health was not there to negotiate in good faith. Instead of focusing on a real, long-term solution, the government used the process as a publicity stunt. The government breached confidentiality when disclosing confidential information to the public, and imposed a one-time payment that was never negotiated. These actions demonstrate the government’s lack of commitment to a responsible bargaining process.
While it is accurate the OAO did not accept the terms of further mediation, we stand confident in that decision as those terms would have prevented us from achieving our goal of a long-term solution. At no point did we anticipate the government to walk away after only one attempt at cooperation. The fact is, mediation is a costly process. The OAO is a small organization that does not have the infinite resources required to engage in a process where one of the parties is not taking it as seriously as the other. Eyecare in Ontario has been left behind for over three decades because we have blindly trusted these same disingenuous outreaches by the Ministry of Health over the years. While they talk about building a new and better relationship, to date there have been no commitments or indication of a thoughtful plan that will ensure quality access to eye care for everyone in Ontario today, and into the future. We need reassurances that this time it is truly different. Our phone lines remain open and we patiently wait for the Ministry to reach out and discuss a genuine path forward - one built on trust and constructive dialogues. The people of Ontario deserve no less.
