Happy Canada Day!
Today, I got outside and enjoyed some beautiful Canadian countryside with my family. As we journeyed through this trail together, I spent some time reflecting on the journey Artisanthropy has taken.
I don't know how many of you know this, but I launched Artisanthropy 8 years ago to this day, on July 1st, 2016. Every Canada Day marks our anniversary, and offers an opportunity for reflection on lessons learned, gratitude for where we are, and careful consideration of the future.
While I had quite a vision back when we launched in 2016 - a vision that I feel we have achieved as closely as we possibly could considering all the challenges we have faced along the way (and there have been very, very many of those) - I continue to dream and conjure what the future will look like, and be determined to march onward into it with persistence, patience, and positivity.
Canada Day may be over now, but I hope you all had a beautiful one, spent in peace the way you wanted to spend it. See you all soon.
Check out this pattern booklet for Lang Yarns' Camille! Its vibrant, pixel-like, multi-colour gradient is truly unique and mood-lifting. Want to find a suitable substitute yarn? Just reach out to us and we’ll help you out!

Dear OHS Members,
As many of you know, the Ontario Science Centre suddenly closed its doors last week. The Centre is currently the home of the John Campbell Jacquard Loom, a loom that possesses an unbelievable historical significance and connection to modern day computers.
Many of you have reached out to the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners with your concerns of the future of this loom. I want to share with everyone what I know as of right now.
Today, I phoned a staff member at the Ontario Science Centre. I was told that there has not been any decisions made on any of their assets as of yet. Assets will either be moved to the new location or donated to other centres. She advised me to send them an email with all the details so that THEY will have my information on file. In my email, I explained our concerns, offered to be a point of contact for any decisions regarding the future loom home and also offered any assistance they might need.
The OHS Board will be looking into various ways we can help.
What can you do to help now? You can
- Sign the petition at www.SaveScienceCentre.com
- Write letters to our members of parliament and municipal government.
Please see the letter below written by the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers.
If you feel that you can directly assist or volunteer to help with the future of the John Campbell Loom, please fill in your details on the linked google form. https://forms.gle/Cc26ef8Sqwunwd6LA

Message from the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers
June 27, 2024
The Toronto Guild is extremely worried about the fate of the John Campbell Loom at the Ontario Science Centre, which closed suddenly last Friday. This morning, we sent the following letter to Premier Doug Ford, Mayor Olivia Chow, and Save Ontario's Science Centre. We encourage others to voice their opposition to the closing of the Ontario Science Centre.
Dear Premier Ford,
The Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers is very concerned about the abrupt closing of the Ontario Science Centre and particularly about the future of one its greatest assets: the 19th century Jacquard loom that has been at the Centre since its opening in 1969. As one of only two operational Jacquard looms in Canada, it is a rare treasure. The data for its intricate patterns are stored on binary punchcards, which is why the Science Centre was chosen as its permanent home, as this makes Jacquard looms the forerunner of the modern computer. It holds a vital place in the history of early industry in our province.
The loom was discovered abandoned in a shed in London, Ontario, by textile historians Dorothy and Harold Burnham. After it was acquired by the Science Centre in 1963, a team of dedicated employees and volunteers (including a number of our guild members) punched hundreds of cards and strung thousands of cords to restore the loom to working condition. A team of OSC volunteers continues to operate the loom and answer visitors' questions.
Unlike many museums, the Science Centre features hands-on, working exhibits that demonstrate important developments in technology and science. Every year, students and enthusiasts from across Ontario and beyond travel to Toronto to see this loom in action and marvel at its complex mechanisms -- not to mention the stunning fabric it produces.
Putting this National Treasure into storage would be unconscionable. The loom is two storeys tall, almost 200 years old, and quite fragile. It is unlikely that a temporary facility can be found that will be able to accommodate it. It’s essential that it be properly maintained and kept on display for visitors to appreciate and learn from.
Please reconsider the decision to close the Science Centre and, in future planning, ensure the key artifacts and technology of human history remain preserved and accessible to all Ontarians. We cannot build a future if we lose the past.
The Executive Committee of the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers
