BC Feed The Kids | Our Programs Changing lives at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time. At BC Feed the Kids, we’re passionate about coming up with meaningful ways to serve hungry and under-supported children.
Today is World Hunger Day.
42% of people globally cannot afford a healthy diet (SOFI 2023), but did you know that children in British Columbia are affected by hunger too?
Food insecurity affects 1.8 million Canadian children, including 193,000 in British Columbia.
Our Snack Attack and Hot Lunch programmes help address the need in local schools, and while recent government announcements will help there is still a lot of work to be done.
Could you share this post to raise awareness of food insecurity in British Columbia?
Many local children go to school without snacks or enough food in their lunches. Many other food support programs are only available during meal times, leaving kids hungry for the rest of the day. The Snack Attack Program provides healthy snack options for K-12 students who go to school without enough food.
Here is what one local teacher said about the Snack Attack Program:
“The snack attacks are VERY popular. I think it really shows how much people are struggling with having enough food to eat.”
Did you know that Canada is the only G7 nation without a National School Food Program?
But, is that about to change with the federal government's recent commitment to create a National School Lunch Program?
This is a step in the right direction. However, despite 1 in 3 children facing hunger, the new National School Lunch Program, funded with $1 billion over five years, will only reach an additional 400,000 students. This leaves a significant gap, with millions still at risk.
Food insecurity affects 1.8 million Canadian children, including 193,000 in B.C. While the new national program helps, the fight isn't over. BC Feed the Kids are filling the food gap with impactful food programs and harvesting positive change at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time.
We will continue to campaign for a more comprehensive program. Join us by sharing this post and making your network aware of the shortfall in food provision in British Columbia.

"Among G7 countries, Canada is the only one without a national school food program ... what exists is a patchwork of programs that serves a snack, breakfast or lunch to roughly one million school-age children, 21 per cent of the country’s student population – thanks to non-profit agencies and an army of volunteers."
With food costs soaring and no national program, Canadian schools struggle to feed students — The Globe and Mail Advocates are hopeful that a federal government plan could lead to a universal school food program

currently focuses on three main areas of support. The Snack Attack program supplies nutritious snacks to schools to help fill the current food gaps identified in food supports. The Hot Lunch Program provides funding to cover the cost of hot lunches for students who are not financially able to partake.
