Depending where you live your municipal 🏛️ office may be offering waived dog registration fees if your dog is microchipped! This is a fantastic way to keep your pups safe and save some money.

These RFID (radio frequency identification) chips are passive, meaning they only emit a signal when scanned, not continuously.

These municipal regulations aim to ensure that lost pets can be quickly reunited with their families without having to do the leg work of distributing dog tags, so let’s break down what this means for you and your pup.

✅ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬:
1. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: Microchips provide a permanent form of identification. If your pet gets lost, a quick scan at any local dog pound, veterinary clinic or animal shelter can bring them back home swiftly. When pets are taken to a shelter in these situations, a countdown begins: if they aren't reunited with their owners within 3-10 days, they risk being euthanized.
2. 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: With the new regulations, you can waive those annual dog tag fees, saving you money in the long run.
3. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: In case of disputes, microchips can serve as undeniable proof of ownership.

2. 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Although rare, microchips can sometimes migrate within the pet’s body. Regular checks by your vet can ensure it stays in place.
3. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬: Some people worry about the data stored on microchips, but rest assured, microchips only contain a unique ID number linked to a database with your contact info.
4. 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝: If your phone number changes or you move you need to remember to update your information with the microchip company, otherwise the chip is obsolete.

🩺 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
* 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬: Microchipping is a quick and minimally invasive procedure. It’s similar to getting a vaccination and generally causes no more discomfort than a routine shot, although I prefer to have it done when having a procedure such as a spay or dental since they’ll be under anesthesia anyways.
* 𝐍𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬: Studies have shown that microchips do not pose long-term health risks to pets. They are designed to be biocompatible, meaning they won't cause allergic reactions or tumors.
* 𝐍𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲: This is a great option, especially for those tiny breeds who don’t wear collars (like my crew). No risk of tracheal damage or choking from collars.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:
My dearly departed Yorkie boys, Deegan and Trooper were both microchipped and now Lini and Tija are microchipped as well. Kiwi will be getting hers when she’s spayed. 🐶❤️ I’ve never had any issues and knowing they are easily identifiable brings me peace of mind!

Being out in nature 🌳 ☀️ is our favorite!

Adding (filtered) water to your dog or cat's meals is not just about quenching thirst but ensuring their body functions optimally. Adequate water, especially for kibble or freeze dried eaters aids in improve digestion, liver and kidney health, joint health and overall well-being including circulation, waste removal, body temperature, and energy levels. Always ensure you add extra water to your pet's meals, proportionate to their size, and increase the amount if they are consuming kibble. This is especially important for cats and even more if they consume kibble.

Although dogs' stomachs are naturally equipped to handle bacteria, potentially harmful bacteria can accumulate outside their stomach, reaching dangerous levels. Allowing your pet to lick a bowl that's been used and left out for too long can lead to a bacterial infection. Therefore, keeping their dishes clean is crucial for their well-being.

Going through some old messages and ran across this one which I received a couple years ago. It’s a profound and insightful message, written to me by a former veterinary assistant. It's a reminder that, though silent, many people in the veterinary world share our thoughts, yet might hesitate to voice their opinions for various reasons.

This message reinforces that we’re on the right track for advocating natural and holistic pathways 🌿 for maintaining our dogs' health.

It's a solid reminder that our efforts towards healthier, happier dogs through natural care is not only valid, but vital, and truly making a difference.

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

You all know we try to do everything we can to 👊🏼 knock out canine cancer, right?! But treated lawns are definitely not helping.

Did you know dogs of pet parents who have their lawns treated with ☠️ herbicides and/or pesticides are much more likely to get cancer?

A dogs risk is drastically ⬆️ increased because they are so close to the ground and always breathing in the residue. They are also in constant physical contact with the toxins through their muzzles and paws, and can also absorb the chemicals through their skin.

I know we can’t control everything but we should be mindful on other properties out of your control. But on your own property, where you get to call the shots, is where you can actually do more to protect your dog. Sure, you won’t be the lawn loving, envy of the neighbourhood, but who gives a fluff?! We care ❤️ more about our dogs than what other people think!

If you must come up with a compromise and must spray the front yard, at least refrain from spraying the back where your pup spends most of their time.

Additionally, something else you probably never really considered was your dog brings these residues into your home 🏡 too!! This is why wiping your dogs paws off or doing paw soaks is so important.

So please do not fall for it when your professional lawn care company says their application is safe for your pet (or your kids). Please don’t be so niave! It may not hurt them immediately, but overtime it is making a negative 😧 impact on their health which can rob you of precious years with them.

🌟 𝐊𝐢𝐰𝐢'𝐬 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 🌟

Our brave little Kiwi is facing yet another challenge. Early April marked the beginning of an unexpected journey for us, as we prepared for what we thought was just another step in her growth - a routine spay procedure. But life threw us a curveball, and we've been on a bit of a rollercoaster🎢 since.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐫:

* 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟖: It started with Kiwi's appetite changing. Not wanting to take any chances, we did some comprehensive bloodwork. Her neutrophils were down, and it seemed we had caught something early on.
* 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟏: We ran a urinalysis, hoping for some good news, and thankfully, that came back clear.
* 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟏𝟏: Hoping her neutrophils had improved, we retested, but instead, they had dropped even further down to 1.6.
* 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟏𝟕: We tested her B12 and cortisol levels to rule out other causes. Both tests came back normal, which was a relief, but also meant we were back to square one. We decided to postpone her spay procedure to focus entirely on this neutrophil issue and protect her fragile health.
* 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟔: Our next steps are another CBC test. We're crossing everything we have, hoping her neutrophils have gone up.

It's been a bit of an emotional journey. Neutropenia can be caused by so many things, and we're in the process of ruling them out one by one. The hardest part for me, being so passionate about canine 🐕 nutrition, is that there's no dietary fix for this. But, that hasn't stopped me from doing everything in my power to keep her immune system as strong as possible. And typically I wouldn’t be so worried about a lone level being off, but it’s the fact that it’s on a consistent decline in a short period of time.

The silver lining? Kiwi isn't showing any worrying symptoms beyond her less enthusiastic eating. She's still our cheerful and playful girl! 💖

Spotting 🕵🏼‍♀️ sickness in our dogs involves more than just waiting for alarming blood test results. The real key lies in observing their day-to-day symptoms.

Of course blood tests are essential, but here’s something to think about: By the time a 🩸blood test shows something off, the issue has likely been lurking for a while. That's why keeping an eye on any changes in behavior or appearance can be so important. It’s like getting a heads-up before things possibly turn serious, offering us a chance to intervene sooner rather than later.

Remember, preventing health problems or catching them early is always less stressful and less expensive than treating them after they’ve taken hold. Symptoms aren’t just random; they’re 🚩 signals. They’re the body’s way of flagging something’s up. Paying attention with all your senses – what you see, hear, smell, and feel –this can make all the difference!

I want to highlight something crucial here though. Simply making symptoms vanish with medication isn’t the same as curing the underlying issue. It's a band-aid 🩹 solution that mainstream medicine often leans on. Once the medication stops, the symptoms (and the problem) usually come back, often worse than before. On the other hand, finding a real cure means tackling the root cause, leading to genuine, lasting recovery.

𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
✅ Early Detection: Noticing and tracking symptom changes can guide your decisions regarding your pups care. This is your first step towards deciding on a course of action.
✅ Symptom Log: Make it a habit of recording, in detail, any possible symptoms, including dates, durations, side or time of day. This can be incredibly helpful for future reference.

It’s also important to understand that each 🐕 dog is an individual. What’s normal for one may not be for another, so getting to know what’s typical for your pup is vital.

Pay attention to everyday 📆 things that might not seem like a big deal but can be significant. This includes how your dog’s coat looks, any changes in their eyes or ears, their appetite and thirst, and even their bathroom habits, etc. These details can help paint a clearer picture of their health over time. And keeping an eye on these signs can help you and your (holistic or homeopathic) vet 👩🏼‍⚕️ figure out the best approach, potentially identifying effective (natural or homeopathic) remedies to boost your pet's health or even cure existing conditions.

Early morning vet 🧑🏻‍⚕️ appointment today for a second round of bloodwork 💉 to make sure this little girl is all good for her spay surgery, scheduled for next 📅 Friday. The last 📈 bloodwork showed some levels slightly off and we think she may have had a 🦠 virus. She’s back to normal and eating better again so fingers crossed for normal 🩸 values!

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝

There are a few myths out there revolving around raw food and how often the food can be frozen 🥶 and thawed and still be safe to eat or how it will affect the taste. Long story short, you can indeed refreeze thawed meats. I’ve been doing it for years and never have issues.

It’s good 👍🏼 to know there’s not much change in the nutrients during the freezing process and often times retain those nutrients better and longer than fresh foods.

Let’s think 🤔 about it… The meat we buy for ourselves at the grocery store has been frozen and thawed a couple times itself. I even confirmed this with my local grocery store butcher….who was kind enough to tell me it’s safe to assume that most meats have already been frozen 2 times prior to us buying it “fresh” from the store display.
Yet, we have no problem coming home and putting it in our freezer, without worrying.

As long as you are refreezing the meat properly, it will not affect the quality or taste. 😋
Properly refers to the amount of times (less is best) you refreeze, how long it’s been frozen for and how it was thawed out.

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬:

🥶 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐍 - You obviously want to refreeze as little as possible in order to retain the taste and texture.

🥶 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐙𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐃𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 - Always use the meat asap but definitely within 6 months. Around that point is where the quality starts to suffer and freezer burn can set in.

🥶 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 - If you plan on refreezing the meat, be sure to only thaw it out in the refrigerator where it’s kept cool. You should not be refreezing meat that has been left out for 1-2 hours on the counter. Thawing slowly is best for retaining quality.

Another thing to be conscious of is where in the freezer you’re storing the 🥩 meat to stay fully frozen. Keeping it low and to the back is best. The door is the worse option because temps tend to fluctuate as people are opening and closing it more than the other areas.

So just follow the rules and your dogs food (and your food) will be 👌🏼 ok!
