Student Raquel Graston is one of the filmmakers whose work is showcased in Reel Shorts: Windsor, available now on CBC Gem. Photo by Shahad Al-Haddad.

Local filmmaker showcase available to stream

The fifth installment of the short film showcase Reel Shorts: Windsor, produced by film professor Mike Stasko, is now available on CBC Gem, the national broadcaster’s video-on-demand platform.

Reel Shorts: Windsor is part of the Absolutely Canadian series highlighting the best documentary programs, short dramas, and comedies created by independent producers, directors, and student filmmakers from Windsor-Essex.

This year’s compilation brings together stories about online dating, loving your plants, sleep walking, loving your own body, and a day in the life of a five-dollar bill and a pair of shoes.

Stasko singles out as of special interest Full Bloom by MFA student Raquel Graston (BA 2022), completed during her undergraduate studies.

“Raquel worked during the summer back-to-back on feature films I am producing: The Lion Behind Him and Vampire Zombies… from Space!” says Stasko. “I valued her contributions as a production assistant and third assistant director and now encourage everyone to see all these films free online.”

The show is available through CBC Gem and also features Uprooted: The Plantemic, produced by UWindsor professor Tony Lau; Phantasma & Fiver by communications major Shahad Al-Haddad; Lookin’ Good, Feelin’ Good by Carolina Di Grado (BA 2022); and Down in the DMs by Taye Alvis.

Professors’ film work wins notice from professional peers

The Directors Guild of Canada, representing the country’s top film production professionals, has nominated two UWindsor professors for projects in the industry.

Min Bae was long-listed for the Directors Guild of Canada’s Jean-Marc Vallee Discovery Award for his documentary feature debut, Reset. The award honours the director of a film that reflects “a bold, new cinematic voice.”

Reset tells the devastating true story of South Korea’s worst maritime disaster, the April 2014 sinking of the Sewol ferry that killed 304 passengers, the majority of casualties schoolchildren. Besides Bae, who directed, produced, and served as director of photography, the crew included UWindsor alumni Gemma Cunial (BA 2019, MFA 2021) as associate producer, Armand Bejrami (BA 2018) as camera assistant, and Marcus Pasceri (BA 2019) as sound recordist.

The documentary will screen during the ReelWorld Film Festival at the Royal Ontario Museum on Oct. 16. Tickets and festival passes can be purchased at www.reelworld.ca.

http://resetmovie.com/

The guild short-listed Nick Hector for Best Documentary Editing for his work on The Perfect Story, which will premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival before going on to the HotDocs festival in Toronto.

The film offers an intimate look at the ethical and moral challenges sparked by the relationship between a foreign correspondent and a young Somali refugee. By revealing the boundaries of journalism and filmmaking, the film questions what stories are told, why, and who gets to tell them.

https://www.nfb.ca/film/perfect-story/

The recognition points up the strength of the film faculty in the School of Creative Arts, says acting director Bruce Kotowich.

“Min Bae and Nick Hector are the only Canadian educators nominated for the 2022 Directors Guild of Canada Awards for feature films, documentaries, and short films,” he notes.

The Inspired Acting Lab, School of Dramatic Art and Heritage Colchester will present Falling: A Wake by Canadian playwright, Gary Kirkham this summer! Directed by Lionel Walsh, the play will be presented at Christ Church Parish Hall, 190 Bagot St, Colchester July 28 – 31 and August 4 - 7. For ticket information, please see attached flyer.

Falling: A Wake is a “haunting and surprisingly funny play” about the journey a middle-aged couple, Elsie and Harold, undertake one starry night on their chicken farm in rural Ontario. Praised as “captivating… a little play with a big heart” by the Calgary Herald, the couple are awakened by an explosion in the middle of the night and make a startling discovery in the field beside their farmhouse. As the play unfolds, there is gentle humour, heartbreak, and healing for this loving couple who are able to put closure on a tragedy in their lives and face the future with hope.

Q***r and Trans Madness: Struggles for Social Justice by Merrick Daniel Pilling

Sunday, June 12, 2022
3:00 pm EST
via Zoom Webinar

Q***r and Trans Madness: Struggles for Social Justice urges those invested in social justice for 2SLGBTQ people to interrogate the biomedical model of mental illness beyond the diagnoses that specifically target gender and sexual dissidence. In this first comprehensive application of Mad Studies to q***r and trans experiences of mental distress, Pilling advances a broad critique of the biomedical model of mental illness as it pertains to 2SLGBTQ people, arguing that Mad Studies is especially amenable to making sense of q***r and trans madness. Based on empirical data from two qualitative research studies, this book includes analyses of inpatient chart documentation from a psychiatric hospital and interviews with those who have experienced distress. Using an intersectional lens, Pilling critically examines what constitutes mental health treatment and the impacts of medical strategies on mad q***r and trans people. Ultimately, Q***r and Trans Madness: Struggles for Social Justice explores the emancipatory promise of q***r and trans madness, advocating for more resources to respond to crisis and distress in ways that are non-coercive, non-carceral, and honour autonomy as well as interdependence within 2SLGBTQ communities.

Modertated by Cat Fitzpatrick.

Bren LeFrancois

Sybil Lamb

Dr. Merrick Pilling is Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Windsor where he teaches courses on disability, madness, race, sexuality, and gender. His work employs an intersectional, anti-racist lens that emphasizes the importance of lived experience, relevance to the communities being researched, and making changes to the systems that create marginalization.
