Big news! We're moving our gallery to Ford City! 🎉

Our doors will officially close to the public on October 5, and our last day at the downtown location will be November 30. We’ll reopen at 998 Drouillard Road in February 2025!

This was a complicated and difficult decision for us—one we did not make lightly—but we believe it’s a necessary and positive step to take if we want to continue to grow as an organization.

We aim to make Artcite a fully accessible and welcoming space for everyone in our community. However, our current location presents some challenges beyond our control. We currently lack accessible washroom facilities, and each year we must vacate our space for a month to allow Windsor International Film Festival operations.

Our Ford City location will be fully wheelchair accessible and we’ll be able to offer consistent year-round programming. A new reception area and front office will enable us to offer public access to our physical archives as a reference library, and we’ll have two gallery spaces: one for major juried exhibitions and related programming; and one for local exhibitions, residencies, workshops, and community events.

Phase II will include a complete digitization of our archives, affordable studio rentals, and more!

Artcite was founded in 1982 by a group of hard-working dreamers who weren’t afraid to take risks and who prized experimentation and out-of-the-box thinking. In 2024, we’re summoning the spirit of our inception and reasserting our role as an alternative, progressive space built for taking chances and challenging norms. We know we’ll fit right in in Ford City, and we’ve received nothing but enthusiastic support from the neighbourhood folks we’ve met so far!

Stay tuned for info on the many ways you can participate in what we’re up to, whether it be as a donor or naming sponsor; through in-kind donations of skills, materials, or services; as a new member of our Board of Directors; or simply by following along with our progress online. We’re looking forward to collaborating with you as we begin writing Artcite’s exciting next chapter!

Join Anahí González at Artcite on Saturday, July 13, for a free Artist Talk featuring a tour of her solo exhibition, "used as a material in the production of another". The talk will conclude with a group conversation, and attendees will be invited to create their own maps inspired by González’s piece "Mapa de Norte America Invertida (2023)." Additionally, González will perform "Employee of the Month, and the Next One, and the Next One... (2024)" from noon until the talk begins at 2pm.

→ Performance: 12–2pm
→ Artist Talk/Conversation: 2–4pm

González’s artistic practice explores migration, Mexican labour, and identity with questions relating to commerce, systems of power and the event of photography through the mediums of photography, installations, and participatory practices.

By engaging with different industries that connect today’s Mexico and Canada, such as the automotive industry, agriculture, and others, González highlights in the exhibition “used as a material in the production of another” how systems of power perceive Mexican labour as mobile, multi-purpose, and temporary. Originally from Saltillo, Mexico, a sister city of Windsor, Ontario, González reflects this connection in some of the photographs and the participatory artwork “Employee of the Month, and The Next One, and The Next One…” (2024).

The title of the show references the bilingual artifact “Anti-Humboldt: A Reading of NAFTA” by Hugo García Manríquez. In the words of the Mexican writer, Cristina Rivera Garza, he “teaches us to find the political in the poetic and the poetic in the political.”

Anahí González is a Mexican photographer based in London, Canada. She holds a BA in Communication Studies (Mexico) and an MFA from Western University (Canada). She is currently an Art and Visual Culture Ph.D. candidate at Western University (Canada). Her work has been included in exhibitions and screenings in countries such as Mexico, Canada, the USA, Norway, Spain, and France.

Join Cassie Paine in the gallery on Saturday, June 15, for a free Artist Talk on her solo exhibition, Pedestrian Values. Cassie will contextualize the themes in the exhibition, provide insight into her practice, and answer any questions you may have about her work. The talk starts at 2pm but the gallery is open from 12–6pm, so come early or stay late. This is the last day of the exhibition, don't miss it!

Pedestrian Values reflects on economic shifts, labour patterns, and development in post-industrial urban cities. Using metal fabrication casting, and interventionist tactics to alter coded materials and infrastructure found in public space, these installations reveal underlying power structures in urban environments, critiquing capitalist value systems focused on profit and development, exposing how these ideals are built into our everyday environment.

The recurring banknote pattern from the board game, Monopoly, serves as an explicit critique of capital’s control over spatial relations. It carries through the exhibition, adorning a traffic barrel, cast coins scattered across the floor of the gallery, and a construction privacy mesh.

•••

Cassie Paine is a sculpture/installation artist and printmaker based in Windsor, ON and Montreal, QC. Her work reflects on the economic precarity of post-industrial cities; investigating urban planning strategies, systems in place to control automotive and pedestrian traffic, and distinctions between public and private places. Paine recently completed her MFA at Concordia University (2024) and holds a BFA with distinction from OCAD University (2018). In addition to making, Paine is a passionate educator who has worked as an instructor at Concordia University and Atelier La Coulée, a cooperative supporting metal art, welding and casting in Montreal, QC.

Join us in the gallery on Friday, June 7 for a very special FREE screening of Happy Together, by Wong Kar Wai. Film starts at 7:30pm. Bring your own snacks! 🍿

FB Event: https://fb.me/e/WuF8lNXp
Trailer: https://youtu.be/5VPvFaAWX9U

"One of the most searing romances of the 1990s, Wong Kar Wai’s emotionally raw, lushly stylized portrait of a relationship in breakdown casts Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung as a couple traveling through Argentina and locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy as they break up, make up, and fall apart again and again. Setting out to depict the dynamics of a q***r relationship with empathy and complexity on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong—when the country’s LGBT community suddenly faced an uncertain future—Wong crafts a feverish look at the life cycle of a love affair that’s by turns devastating and deliriously romantic. Shot by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle in both luminous monochrome and luscious saturated color, Happy Together is an intoxicating exploration of displacement and desire that swoons with the ache and exhilaration of love at its heart-tearing extremes."

Seating is limited. No ticket required. Please arrive on time.

This is the last film in the See/Saw film series.

Join us at 2pm on May 19 for a very special Sunday afternoon workshop with Cassie Paine!

On 519 Day (Windsor Day), Cassie will be hosting a free plaster coin carving workshop in the gallery, surrounded by her current exhibition, Pedestrian Values. The workshop considers the design and function of currency at large—that all currency is at one point invented, arbitrary and fictitious—designed to respond to the needs or desires of a social body.

Who has the authority to prescribe value? What are the needs of the social body today? What are our shared values? With these questions in mind, participants are invited to carve 10” plaster model coins that reflect their values. Following the workshop, the coin models will be 3D-scanned and 3D-printed, at reduced scale (1/10), to return to the participants. The artist will keep a collection of coins to feature in future exhibitions.

Plaster coin models and dust masks will be provided. We'll have a limited amount of carving tools available, so please feel free to bring your own if you'd like (e.g., utility knives, craft knives, butter knives, even speedball lino cutters should work).

Note: This workshop is all ages, but adult assistance will be required for children.

Join us in the gallery on Saturday, May 11 for a very special FREE screening of Daisies, by Věra Chytilová. Film starts at 7:30pm. Bring your own snacks! 🍿

FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/521388613442117
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vBGo95SJz4

"Maybe the New Wave’s most anarchic entry, Věra Chytilová’s absurdist farce follows the misadventures of two brash young women. Believing the world to be “spoiled,” they embark on a series of pranks in which nothing—food, clothes, men, war—is taken seriously. Daisies is an aesthetically and politically adventurous film that’s widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema."

Join us in the gallery on Friday, April 5 for a very special FREE screening of Thank You and Good Night, by Jan Oxenberg. Film starts at 7:30pm. Bring your own snacks! 🍿

"A lost-and-found revelation from indie film and TV maverick Jan Oxenberg is a docu-fantasy narrative focused on the filmmaker’s hilarious, messy, Jewish family as they prepare to say goodbye to someone they love. Narrated by a cardboard cutout of Oxenberg’s scowling child self, Thank You and Good Night takes us on a journey through the proceedings, attempting to defeat death and never say goodbye. An early Sundance hit but virtually unseen for decades, the film reemerges as a singular, uncategorizable exploration of the meaning of life, death, and the tangled stuff that is a family. In this poignant, hilarious, and complex reflection on letting go, Oxenberg innovatively transforms personal tragedy into universally resonant art that is now claiming its rightful place as a classic of independent cinema."

We're excited to announce, Reciprocal: a group exhibition by Chidera Ikewibe (CHI.IKE), Jada Malik Larkin, and Phoenix Thomas, curated by Teajai Travis. The exhibition runs from April 5–May 4, 2024.

→ Soft opening: April 5, 12pm
→ Panel discussion: May 4, 3–4pm
→ Closing reception: May 4, 4–6pm

RECIPROCAL aims to highlight a mutual exchange of creative expression, embodying the idea of unity and equality. Each piece complements and resonates with the others, as all three artists understand the process of translating their personal experiences onto the canvas through their creative work. The gallery acts as a reciprocal reflection of their collective efforts.

•••

Chidera Ikewibe (CHI.IKE) is an Igbo-Nigerian Canadian born poet and artist. She often blends and blurs the lines between poetry and artistry. Her work incorporates Nsibidi, her Igbo culture, and many other poetic and artistic influences. She is currently the City of Windsor's Youth Poet Laureate.

Jada Malik Larkin was born and raised in Windsor. He is committed to sharing Windsor's rich heritage and contributing to its revitalization. Jada channels his creativity into vibrant expressions of gratitude through art.

Phoenix Thomas, is a half-native (Potawatomi) who appears Caucasian and was born and raised on the Walpole Island Indian Reservation. He graduated with an MFA from the University of Manitoba in 2016 and has been exhibiting and creating art since 2011.

Teajai Travis is a multi-hyphenated experimentalist that mediums with sound, space, and a specific method of meditation. As a hereditary storyteller and intuitive percussionist, Teajai is manifesting a practice of installation that engages the empty spaces of sacred geometry, the poetry of mathematical patterns, and the metaphysics of cellular memory. He is exploring pathways of trauma rehabilitation, ancestral resurrection, multidimensional cognition, and meditative time travel by employing the intuitive rituals of his ancestor cells and conjuring the energetic intersections of public space and imagination.
