Tomorrow - English Subtitles. This film documents the spirit possession testimonies and Khalikhane fire-walking ceremony in a Hindu village in the Kathmandu Valley. The Khalikhane ceremony supports the liberation of the spirits of family members who died unnatural, often violent deaths, and so were denied traditional Hindu mortuary rituals. Trapped as wandering spirits, they cause illness and misfortune, as they seek to be released from their suffering earthly existence. Invoked by a ritual specialist, these spirits possess family members who describe the events of their death. They later possess family members again as they enter the Khalikhane fire-walking ceremony to be released to the divine ancestral realm. Family members impacted by the tragic loss of loved ones describe how this ceremony provided relief from everyday suffering, processed their grief and ensured the spiritual progress of the soul of their deceased family members. This documentary is a testament to the power of ritual and community to heal and process the pain of the tragic death of family members and the related suffering of individuals and families.
The vibrant rituals captured in this documentary have become increasingly prevalent in a number of communities in Central Nepal. Yet, they have never been fully documented. We were given permission to film these ceremonies and record the experiences of community members because the filmmaker is a member of the clan of the village. This documentary presents significant and sacred cultural practices and the engagement of community to address universal problems of suffering and loss for individuals, families and community.
“The power of sacred ritual and the celebration of community”
“A path to transforming suffering and the tragic loss of loved ones.”
