Sustainable Branded Merch – Bamboo

Bamboo is actually not a tree, but rather a species of grass. It is stronger than steel, grows at a rate of up to three feet per day, requires no herbicides or pesticides and very little water to grow, produces up to 35% more oxygen than a tree of similar mass, and absorbs much as 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide, per hectare, per year. By environmental standards, that’s an impressive resume.

In the Promotional Products Industry, Bamboo is used in the production of a wide range of items, including pens, journals, t-shirts, tote bags and many others. It accepts all forms of branding well and has generally been accepted as an environmentally responsible and sustainable solution.

Certainly, Bamboo is not without its downsides. The vast majority if it is commercially produced in Southeast Asia, meaning the end products travel a much longer distance to North American Markets. Of course, most consumer products are produced in Southeast Asia, so one can also argue that it is a positive step forward to at least have those products made from a much more sustainable product, like bamboo.

Overall, the benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks, and we give Bamboo a 4/5 as a choice for sustainable Branded Merchandise.

Sustainable Branded Merch – Seed Paper

Seed Paper is a versatile, eco-friendly material that can be used to create many Promotional Products. It is made from post-consumer and post-industrial paper waste that is embedded with flower, herb, and vegetable seeds. Once these already recycled products reach end of life, they can be planted, allowing the paper to decompose, and the seeds to germinate.

Seed Paper can be used to make rulers, notebooks, business cards, bookmarks, coasters, and many other useful products that can allow your brand to demonstrate its commitment to helping create a greener, more sustainable economy.

When choosing any Promotional Product made from seed paper, it is important to consider density. Some economy stock has germination rates as low as 5% or less, which essentially defeats the purpose. Premium seed paper stock will offer germination rates from 50% - 75%.

Sustainable Branded Merch - Wheat Straw Plastic

Wheat Straw Plastic is an exciting new material that is being used in the manufacture of retail products, and Promo Merch as well.

Wheat straw is an agricultural biproduct that has traditionally had little or no value. It is often burned off at the end of the harvest, which contributes to environmental pollution. By utilizing this waste, these emissions are eliminated, and an additional income stream is created for farmers.

When processed, wheat straw yields an organic polymer know as Lignin, which gives the plant it’s rigidity. It can the be mixed with other substances, such as sugar, and organic dyes, to create a moldable, durable, plastic-like compound. This is then used to manufacture an ever-increasing range of products, including coffee mugs, lunch boxes, pens, USB Drives, and much more.

The only real downside with Wheat Straw is that some products contain only a percentage of this material. While incorporating any amount of recycled or sustainable material is better than using 100% virgin plastic, it is still a factor you should be aware of.

We give Wheat Straw Plastic a 4/5 as a choice for sustainable Branded Merchandise.

Sustainable Branded Merch – RPET Fabric

As with consumer goods, there is an increasing demand in the Corporate World for Promotional Products and Branded Merchandise that are made from sustainable materials, and that offer a reduced carbon footprint during their production.

Recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or RPET, is one such material. It is made largely from recycled plastic water bottles. They are cleaned, ground into flakes, melted down, and pulled through spinnerets to make polyester yarn. This, in turn, is used to make a wide range of products, including t-shirts, jackets, caps, toques, duffel bags, totes and more.

Incorporating RPET items into your Branded Merch strategy has many positives: it requires 90% less water and 85% less energy to produce than virgin polyester. It also decreases the demand for new material manufactured with a much higher carbon footprint. Most importantly, it reduces the amount of plastic waste that winds up in our oceans and landfills, where it can up to 700 years to biodegrade.

There are still some cons to RPET, however. Most notably, they still release microplastics when washed, which ultimately make their way into the world’s watershed. This can be avoided by simply using a disposable filter in your washing machine. Microplastic shedding is also less of a problem with shopping totes, sports bags and other items that require little or no washing.

In the final analysis, we give RPET Apparel a 3.5/5 as a choice for sustainable Branded Merchandise, and a 4/5 for Non-Apparel RPET products.
