The Pederson Group
We help the construction & engineering industry find talent for projects & long-term growth.
🏗️ We know recruiting the right candidate can be challenging, especially given the current labour shortage. That's why our team created a breakdown of the different types of candidates available in today's job market.
Active candidates and passive candidates. What's the difference and who should you target?
Active candidates are actively applying on job boards and websites for new positions—ready to make a move quickly. Passive candidates are not applying online because they have their heads down, solving problems in their current role.
As a search firm that specializes in talent placement, we hunt passive candidates for our clients. These skilled hires commonly result in a positive trajectory for our client's businesses.

Construction employment continues to decline ⬇️
According to Statistics Canada's latest Labour Force Survey, employment in Canada's construction sector has decreased over the past 12 months. To address the workforce shortage, construction companies are working harder than ever to find and secure workers, often losing out on needed talent to their competitors.

📈 In 2023, Canada's non-residential construction sector experienced continued growth, with more than 400 major projects exceeding $350 billion in value!
BuildForce Canada monitored a wide range of projects across various industries that were started or ongoing in 2023.
The construction of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings was supported by continued economic activity and through building components of select major projects being tracked.
Building permits for commercial buildings dipped slightly below 2022 levels (-1%) which was a result of a decline in the construction of office buildings and retail space. However, construction of industrial buildings rose +12% which came strictly from the construction of factories and plants.
The increase of institutional buildings was robust (+25%) across all building types, with the largest increases in activity coming from the construction of hospitals and medical facilities, churches and religious buildings and affordable homes.
Major projects tracked by BuildForce Canada, translated into strong construction activity across Canada’s non-residential sector in 2023.

🚧👷♂️ The construction industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled workers, highlighting the urgent need for companies to create fresh, innovative recruitment strategies to appeal to the younger generation of workers.
As the older generation begins to retire, a demographic shift has propelled millennials and Gen Z to become Canada’s largest and fastest-growing workforce. As the number of retirees in the construction sector continues to increase and fewer young workers join the industry, the labour shortage is only expected to intensify.
To stay competitive, construction companies must develop new strategies in order to secure talent and successfully recruit and retain new workers.

🎓As of May 2024, the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women has increased to 20.2%, a 3.2% increase from 2014.
Female representation in Canada’s construction industry is improving. While this is exciting news for the industry, more work needs to be done.
According to Engineers Canada | Ingénieurs Canada, 30% is universally held as a tipping point for sustainable change, which is why they have set a national goal of raising the percentage of newly licensed female engineers to 30% by the year 2030. Reaching 30 by 30 will expedite the shift in the overall membership of the engineering profession as larger amounts of females pursue the line of work.
To meet this goal, the engineering industry needs to increase the representation of women in the workforce by 9.8% over the next six years. Achieving this target will help to close the gender gap, encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering, and will help combat the looming labour shortage we are facing today.
Contact us today to discuss how your company can help the industry achieve the 30 by 30 goal to help combat the labour shortage.

Manitoba's construction industry maintains momentum with 15 consecutive months of investment gains!
Take a look at April's market share for residential and non-residential building construction ⬇️
The increase in population is demanding more accommodation space. To fulfil this demand, construction activities from both government entities and private sector organizations are increasing, with multi-family apartments and affordable housing initiatives taking precedence over the development of single-family homes.
The non-residential sector also has an overall market increase, with a major increase year-over-year in institutional investments in construction within Manitoba.
This growth is a clear demonstration of Manitoba's strong and vibrant economy. More construction means more jobs and more growth of the investment dollars being poured back into our communities.

Recruiting top talent in today's competitive market can be challenging, especially if you're not tapping into the passive candidate market.
Did you know that passive candidates (candidates who are employed and are not actively looking for work) represent 70% of the global workforce? This means that by relying solely on active job seekers, you're reducing your talent pool to just 30% of the working population.
Not only are you limiting your search by excluding passive candidates, you are also missing out on high-quality talent with the right combination of experience, qualifications and long-term career goals to succeed within your organization.
Passive candidates are too busy solving problems for their current employers to be applying to job boards such as Indeed. At The Pederson Group, we have the network and resources to quickly and efficiently tap into the passive candidate market.

🔔 Despite the federal government's efforts, housing construction has failed to keep up with the influx of new residents. In just the past two years, Canada has welcomed 2.4 million people, which is more than the population of New Mexico, but has only built enough houses for the number of residents in Albuquerque.
To address Canada's housing issue, the Liberal government is granting permanent residency to more skilled trades workers to help meet their ambitious goal to double the pace of construction and add 3.9 million homes by 2031.
