Forte Music knows how important music theory is for learning the fundamentals of music, which is the only way students are able to truly excel at playing a musical instrument. Music theory is very important for those who want to read and play music. This is why we always incorporate music theory in our lessons!
Learning to read music is a lot like learning a new language, to the point where a fluent person can “hear” a musical “conversation” when reading a piece of sheet music! Composers use theory in their written music to communicate with and guide musicians as to how they want their music played.
Another plus is that understanding the ingredients that go into producing a piece of music allows students to have more freedom and control over what they can create musically!

Aaron teaches guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele at Forte Music! With over sixteen years of performance experience playing the bass guitar while composing music and six years of private bass instruction, Aaron has developed a strong passion for music and for passing along musical wisdom.
Aaron is currently active with his band, Dizzy Mystics, who were awarded as 2020’s “Metal / Hard Music Artist of the year” through the Western Canadian Music Awards. Aside from gathering a buzz in the Winnipeg music scene, that buzz has carried them through multiple Canadian tours, including 3 showcase slots at 2019’s Canadian Music Week in Toronto.
Spreading music to the world is Aaron’s greatest passion and it is his absolute pleasure to progress the world through music. We love having him as a part of our team!
The piano is the most popular instrument for lessons at Forte Music, and there are many reasons why so many people are drawn to this instrument!
1. It’s an orchestra and band all in one – melody, rhythm and chords all with just 2 hands!
2. The piano has both an incredible dynamic and melodic range! The volume of the piano can go from very quiet or very loud without amplification so you can emote and carry a tune easily. Also, pianos cover all 88 notes of the musical scale which offers an incredible, unparalleled range.
3. The piano teaches both treble and bass clef! Most instruments are confined to one clef, but the piano utilizes the two most popular ones. This means that you receive a deeper understanding of musical ranges through these clefs and music theory will already be easier.
4. Piano lessons help make learning other instruments easier!

Still not convinced as to why music lessons are an incredibly valuable experience? Here’s another reason you should consider signing yourself or your child up for lessons:
It teaches discipline and patience! Learning an instrument is all about delayed gratification. Think of an instrument like the violin; before you can make a sound, you need to learn how to properly hold the violin and bow. Music lessons teach the student how to work towards long-term goals that can take months or even years to reach. Group lessons also improve patience as students must wait their turn to play individually, while in turn also teaches them to respectfully listen to their peers playing while being still, quiet, and attentive for designated periods of time. Even practicing at home requires a very focused kind of attention!
Whenever the saxophone gets brought up, people always seem to say, “I’d love to learn the sax!” And we can’t blame them! Apart from the obvious admiration that you will receive from your friends for your excellent choice of instrument, here are a few reasons for you to start playing the saxophone:
1. There’s a saxophone for everybody! Saxophones come in 9 different types (though the most popular are Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone saxes) and each of these saxes are a different size. So whether you are short or tall, or prefer melody or baseline, they’ve got you covered!
2. It is a very social instrument - you can play in a blues band, a wind ensemble, a big band group, a jazz quartet, or a symphony orchestra, or all of the above!
3. Saxophones are fairly easy to play - it is a newer instrument when compared to others in an orchestra and has a fi*****ng system that is relatively easy to understand. The sax is also one of the easier of the woodwind instruments when it comes to producing the correct tone.

Alasdair teaches the piano and trumpet at Forte Music! He started playing the piano when he was just five years old and now any years later, his love for music has done nothing but multiply throughout his life. Since his days learning the musical alphabet, he has completed his RCM grade 9 piano with first class honours along with fulfilling the Advanced Rudiments Theory component. Alasdair has also been heavily involved in many of the groups his graduating high school (River East Collegiate) had to offer playing both piano, trumpet, and singing. So when you need to find someone to play at a wedding, you know who to call!
We are so lucky to have Alasdair as a part of our team!

On the fence about adding music lessons to the ongoing list of activities in your or your child’s schedules? We will highlight benefits that come with enrolling for music lessons, even if being the next Mozart is not the goal.
It improves academic skill! Music and math are highly intertwined. Understanding beats, rhythms, and scales aids their understanding with division, fractions, and patterns. Memorizing songs strengthens their short-term and long-term memory. Music can even teach basic physics as instruments created waveforms through harmonic and sympathetic vibrations. Who would have thought music could help your child do better in academic classes?
Owner Shannon learned to play piano as a child, but she wouldn’t call herself a musician. Her musical education wasn’t bad; it was just... standard.
At Forte, we go way beyond standard music curriculums, because we don’t just want to teach our students to “play” music. We want to teach our students to love music, understand music, perform music, and create music of styles both in solo and group settings.
This is the musical education Shannon wished she’d had and it’s the musical education she wants her children to have. And now they can. Forte Music can help you or your child on their way to becoming fully a true musician.

We are so impressed with all the amazing performances our students put on this weekend at our recitals! After two long years of no performances, it was such an incredible celebration and we couldn’t be more proud than we are of each and every single student. 🎼🎵
Theory and technical work like scales can be daunting work, but these are all resources that will help you to be a better performer, no matter what your path!
Songwriters had to practice their craft before they wrote the songs we know and love, and having these technical backgrounds allow us to break these rules to create astounding music and performances ourselves!

Forte Music’s Tip of the Week is to practice some more!
We all know the saying ‘practice makes perfect’, but we know it can be difficult to motivate ourselves to do it, especially when it’s tricky material we are struggling with.
If you are feeling like you’re stuck, don’t stop practicing but change the way you come at it! Figure out what you love about it. Practice and play from a place of curiosity. What’s next? What can I learn? How can I get more creative with this piece? Learn to practice from a growth mindset – I want to continue to learn, grow and hone my musical talent. You will be floored with the growth you see!
The ukulele is a small guitar-like instrument that is great for all ages! Here are a few reasons why the ukulele is an amazing instrument to learn:
1. It’s easy to learn! The soft nylon strings are gentler on your fingertips and the small size reduces wrist tension because notes are easy to reach without stretching. Plus, it only has four strings so chord shapes and scales are easier to learn.
2. It’s affordable! Buying a ukulele won’t strain your wallet like some other pricey instruments do.
3. It’s portable! I mean, how many instruments are as small as the ukulele? You can take it virtually anywhere! Your drummer and tubist friends will be so jealous. 😉

Forte Music’s Word of the Week: RITARDANDO
You have probably seen this term somewhere in your music score before, often at the end of a section or piece. It is typically marked as ‘ritard’ or ‘rit.’ and it indicates that they want you to slow down (like the musical version of a yellow light!)
Spring can show up anytime and we would be happy campers here at Forte Music! We are dreaming of nights filled with guitar singalongs around a bonfire, beach days with ukuleles, and amazing summer music camps! Our summer music programming is live now so check out http://www.myforte.ca to register or find out more. Hurry now! Spots are limited!

Make new friends, have good times, and create music in a safe and invigorating environment with FORTE Music!
Being a musician is often filled with highs and lows, especially in times like now where performing opportunities are low and it can be hard to stay focused on the end goal.
This is why it is incredibly important that you are your biggest cheerleader in your musical journey! Take time right now to enjoy the process and the evolution of yourself as an artist. We are always our worst critics, so if you’re making yourself proud with the progress you’re seeing, that’s a huge accomplishment!
Looking for an instrument to start your child’s musical journey? Or has it always been your dream to play an instrument but you’re unsure of where to start? We recommend piano!
The piano is a phenomenal gateway to learning a variety of instruments because in lessons you are taught how to read music and the understanding of both treble and bass clefs, it helps hone your hand-eye coordination, and it introduces important concepts of music theory. Plus, it’s easy to sound great right from the very beginning!
