Velvet Blitz is a Filipino - Canadian Indie Band that delivers a new and raw energy of music that blends Hard Rock with Punk flavors with a hint of Bluesy sensibilities, resulting in a unique and experimental sound that is both raw and expressive. Their music is characterized by original riffs, captivating melodies, and intricate chord progressions, creating a signature "BLITZ SOUND" that is hard to ignore.

Velvet Blitz was formed in 2019, then had a couple of line up changes, and in the pandemic of 2020, they found the official lineup. The four members of the band have unique vocal and instrumental abilities, Mish on vocals, Nelson on guitars and vocals, Dri on bass, keyboards and vocals, and Norm on drums and vocals, completing the band's solid lineup.

Velvet Blitz released their debut indie album, "Blitzkrieg!" in June, 2021. The album featured the hit single "Do That Thing" which instantly became a fan favorite. Do That thing has reached more than 100,000 streams and is included in over 250 playlists in Spotify.

Velvet Blitz is now working on their second album, which includes three singles, "Hit The Floor", "No Man", and their new song, "Fast Lane" was released last week, June16th.

The JZ Cuay Band plays New Wave inspired songs and have been performing at various local shows in the city. The band is composed of: JZ Cuay on vocals/guitars, Ali Muñoz on bass/vocals, James on drums, and Jad Bantug on lead guitar/vocals.

Formed in 2023, The JZ Cuay Band is an exciting act to watch as they entertain the crowd with their renditions of popular new wave songs of the '70s, '80s and '90s, one thing that Gen X'ers could easily relate to.

33RPM consists of Jacob Zosa on vocals/guitars, Ramil Alcantara on bass/vocals, Jun Salcedo on lead guitars and Eduard Daquina on drums. Formed in 2022, the band popularized a setlist of '90's alternative rock classic hits and has played a number of shows in the Winnipeg Pinoy local scene.
They have also added to their hard rock catalogue 2 original songs "Mother" and "Stranglehold" which defines their music further as alternative rockers.

Electric Boneyard is a blues-rock indie band formed in 2019. Their music is obviously a heavy dose of psychedelic blues and hard rock.
One can easily identify with their original sound for their members are not new to the music scene anymore. Paul also does vocal duties for one of Winnipeg's premiere metal band Immortal Sacrament, Mel used to play guitars for bands like Elesi, Cinco and Root90, Erwin is the bass player for Freeway Jam that frequently gigged at Mayric's in Manila back in the late '90's. Another notable feature of the band is Moises, who used to be the guitarist for Nora Aunor Fans' Club in the early 2000's. And lastly, Noel, has been a staple in the Winnipeg Pinoy band scene since the early '90's, playing drums for various bands, one remarkable group he had played with was Traffik Jam.
All in all, Electric Boneyard is a great deal of a package. You should also check out their past album release via Ditto Music, an independent record label in Southeast Asia.

Ragdolls started as an alternative band in 2015, embracing the raw and eclectic sounds of the genre. In 2016, they transitioned into ska and reggae, a shift that defined their musical journey for the next seven years. Each member brought their unique influences, enriching the band's sound and deepening their connection as a unit.

Early in 2024, they decided to take another bold step by transitioning to soul, jazz, and funk. This change was driven by their collective desire to innovate and push each member's musical boundaries. The shift to a soul-jazz-funk fusion represents a new era for Ragdolls, one that brings a fresh and sophisticated sound to their repertoire.

Their song "Sunzzyyy" epitomizes this evolution. Originally performed by vocalist Dolly Atillo with her former all-female band, The LLYS, "Sunzzyyy" has been reinterpreted in their new style. This reimagining from ska to a soul-jazz-funk vibe highlights the band's commitment to reinvention and musical exploration. The new version of "Sunzzyyy" encapsulates the smooth grooves and intricate harmonies that define Ragdolls' current direction.

The Ragdolls are more united than ever, ready to embrace the challenges and joys of this new chapter. The band looks forward to crafting more original music that reflects their growth and diverse influences. With enthusiasm and creativity, Ragdolls step into the future, committed to making their mark in the soul-jazz-funk scene.

Inspired by the likes of Rivermaya and Rico Blanco, the alternative rock band TITO BLANKO was formed late summer of 2023 initially for the Rakrakan event to which they were eventually invited to 2 more gigs to end the year (Kaskasan2023 and opening for FEELGOOD band). The band was formed with Kitz on lead vocals and guitar. As well, there is Carl on guitar, Cha on bass, and Dwardz on drums, and all 3 are also backup vocals. They do not have regular gigs--they mostly jam when they get together or when they get a chance to join other local bands. They strive for the 'eat, sleep, drink (water), jam, and repeat' life while learning to grow as a band as well as individually and enjoy music.

Five Against The Wall / May 27, 2023 / X-Cues Cafe & Lounge in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Last Saturday was a pretty hot weather, perfect for just staying indoors and minding your own stuff. Of course, there are always enough available options especially the regular go-to venues around the city where one can just unwind or enjoy the summer nights in Winnipeg with food, music, arts, and the like.

X-Cues Cafe & Lounge became a witness to a special rockin' night of local Pinoy Alternative Musicians that said evening. The night was filled with fun, stories, "long-time, no-see" high fives and meeting new and old faces in the Pinoy music scene and friends from beyond the Filipino community.

Mak and Mikko were the earliest in the venue as they have volunteered to man the doors/ticketing. Their respective bands were not playing that night so they decided to undertake this noble task of collecting cover charge and wristband 'slapping'--Good job and thanks to both of you! And by the way, it was also Mikko who took photos that are on this post.

Members of Humous came next to setup and soundcheck with Vito, the house sound tech. Em and Inah of TMBYN Studios who were also supporters of the show came early as well to help out with soundcheck.

Around 7PM, the bands started arriving one by one together with some expected guests - and the unexpected ones too..
Game 6 of the NBA Western Finals is also up on the big screen, that is why you could feel some kind of a festive vibe that night.

Humous, the lo-fi alt-rock trio of JC, Johnric and Julius, hit the deck at 8:30PM and rip the stage with their organic, lo-fi power tracks, a setlist of old and new songs from their recent EPs.

9:00PM. Awfully Quiet, does not really seem to be awful, nor quiet, most probably just in between. The quartet of Ross, Kevin, Ryan and Junar played their dynamic setlist ranging from melancholic hybrid to indie shoegaze themes of their songs.

What The Funk! got up at 9:30PM and instigated a power funk-laden set of covers and originals. Trixer effortlessly displayed his usual vocal antics and frontman prowess while Aries just shredded all the way through the night. Vener and Adrian are in lockstep making sure they are holding the groove for the whole audience.

Just before Velvet Blitz's set started, everyone turned to the big screen for a moment to witness Boston's win over Miami that calls for a Game 7. Anyway, the indie-infused songs performed by Dri on bass and vocals, Norm on drums and vocals, Nelson on guitar and vocals encapsulated in a blend of hard rock and alternative rock just stirred everyones senses.

Electric Boneyard closed the night with their ever powerful psychedelic blues and good old rock n' roll originals. Mel seems like in a deep mantra playing his axe while keeping at pace with his twin axeman Moises who keeps the melodic rhythm in place. Paul delivered his usual best with his deep tones---and undertones in their song lyrics. Noel on drums and Erwin on bass were like the older brothers keeping the crazy train running on track!

All in all, that night was a little bit of everything. Nostalgic, emotional, merry, cold, hot, and everything in between. The most important thing is we have proved to ourselves that we can still do it, and we will keep on doing it until it bleeds and we don't feel it anymore!

Around 50 people were present, and we were all happy to have shared our music to everyone. We also want to give a huge shout-out to the entities that supported the show, namely: Raw x Rare Music, JPN Mortgage, Inked by D, TMBYN Studios, Simply You Photography and all our families and friends.

What The Funk, is a newly-formed band in the Pinoy music scene of Winnipeg, but ironically have a whole roster of veterans in the band circuit in the city.

Trixer Bautista has been around for a while, playing vocals for bands like FourSight (early 2000s) and Transfusion (late 2000s) for quite a long time in his musical career.
Axeman Aries Ocson fronted the famous hard rock quartet Fhuzzmhado (early 2010s), and have extended his power riffs to his side projects like Ripple Whine and Tres Pico. Batterist Adrian Cantos, a pretty well-rounded drummer currently plays for alt-pop group Mixed Emotions and the Ska outfit Ragdolls. Vener has also showcased his versatile four-string skills with alt-rockers Monkey Hours and with the Pinoy metal stalwarts Immortal Sacrament.

As far as delving in deeper into the original music scene, they have been working on a 4-original song repertoire to add to their already awesome lineup of funky cover tunes from bands like POT and RHCP.

Velvet Blitz was formed in 2019 based out of Winnipeg and has been playing variety of genres that falls in a fine blend of hard rock and alternative rock. The band is composed of couples Dri on bass, vocals, and Mish, lead vocals respectively, Norm on drums and Nelson on guitars.
There is no way you wouldn't know about the band because they are very active in the social media realm and have been part of various online platforms of indie bands around the globe.
They have also released their debut album during the pandemic "Blitzkrieg" and are currently working on their sophomore release this year.

Awfully Quiet was formed in 2021, according to Kevin, the intention was to play front act in concerts just so they could watch the bands for free.
Sounds wittingly funny, at first, you might mistaken them as newbies in the local Pinoy band scene in Winnipeg, but in fact Ross and Junar have been gigging around with their high school band since the late 2000's. They were also part of Humous's first lineup that eventually released an album in 2018 and 2019. Kevin as well, used to play bass for Ethnica, a popular local metal band in the early 2010's that also toured Western Canada and had also released an album.

They are looking forward to record and release their debut EP as Awfully Quiet his year.

Humous is an indie lo-fi alternative-rock band. Formed in 2013 and had undergone several lineup changes, but the ethos stays the same - to create original music that stirs their listeners' spiritual and social consciousness.
They have released 5 independent albums - Humous (2018), Six Shots of Wisdom (2019), Old News (2020), Naked Lies, Naked Truth (2021) and DosMilBeinteDos (2022), and currently working on a new album this year.
