Day 12 in Croatia
Our day began with a group excursion from Crikvenica, a nearby town with restaurants and cafes, shopping, and swimming. We then travelled by boat to a nearby island and had a wonderful time swimming and cooling off in the sea.
Once we returned from our excursion, we had a few hours to rest before our performance in Selce, part of the “Summer in Adria” music festival. We were one of six groups who performed. These groups travelled from various places, including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Lithuania, and Bulgaria.

Heading Home
After two weeks away (and longer for some!), we’re ready to head home! We had an amazing trip with amazing audiences and unique venues. We're looking forward to the next trip, but until then, we can’t wait to see you at Concert 1 on October 6, 2024!

Days 9 & 10 in Croatia
After our concert in Zadar, we all enjoyed a couple of free days to explore the city.
Many of us booked a tour at Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. The temperature was high, but the views were incredible! We also enjoyed a group excursion that took us to two different islands, where we could swim and hike, before heading back to our hotel for our final night in Zadar.

Day 11
On our 11th day, we headed to our final destination in Rijeka.
Once checking into our rooms, we discovered that the air conditioning could not keep up to the heat, with many rooms hovering around 33-35 degrees!

Day 8 in Croatia began with a bus trip from Neum, Bosnia to Zadar, Croatia. We arrived at a beautiful hotel and had a few free hours before our concert. This concert took place in front of the Forum in the main town centre. We were surrounded by beautiful old buildings and sang to a huge, appreciative crowd!

Croatia Day 5: Our final day in Split allowed us some free time during the day. This was followed by an evening concert sponsored by the Tourist Board of Split. The concert took place in front of the Croatian National Theatre and was attended by a large crowd of about 350.
After the concert, we had the opportunity to celebrate our conductor’s birthday back at the hotel! No birthday celebration could be complete without a spontaneous rendition of “Lonesome Road” by James Taylor. And now we look forward to a few days of R&R!!!

Day 4: In the cellars of the Diocletian's Palace
After an afternoon of touring and sightseeing, we performed our second concert in the cellars of the Diocletian’s Palace in Split. This concert was part of Splitsko Ljeto, a festival series taking place every Thursday.
The palace was built in the 3rd century as a residence for the emperor and provided one of the most unique venues we’ve ever seen!

Our first full day in Croatia began with a rehearsal at our hotel. Some singers began their travels a few weeks ago, so we haven’t sung together in quite a while! The afternoon was free, and then we travelled to Trogir for our first concert. The joint concert with their church choir was well attended and a wonderful way to begin our trip!

Winnipeg Singers at the Second Chance Car Museum in Treherne. A great day! Three generations on stage for our alto/Executive Director Pat Wray! Pat's been in the choir since 1997, and her daughter Ainsley Wray since about 2008. At the Car Museum Pat's 15 year old granddaughter Scarlet was invited to jump on stage and join the choir in "Battle of Jericho" which she had learned at CMYC choir camp. Maestro Yuri Klaz told us he has never directed three generations in a choir before!

"The Winnipeg Singers will showcase a work by Winnipeg-born composer Jocelyn Morlock in a concert that will salute 11 female composers from Canada.

Morlock grew up in Winnipeg and studied music at Brandon University, later earning masters and doctorate music degrees from the University of British Columbia. She was 53 when she died in March 2023.

She’s best known for being a composer-in-residence for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and for My Name Is Amanda Todd, a 2015 composition about a 15-year-old girl from Port Coquitlam, B.C., who was victim of cyberbullying and died by su***de in 2012.

The Winnipeg Singers will perform Morlock’s One Black Spike, which focuses on the completion of the first transcontinental railway in Canada near Fort Fraser, B.C., in 1885.

Other composers on Sunday’s program include Ruth Watson Henderson, a longtime choral composer and pianist and Haida/Cree artist Kristi Lane Sinclair, a Juno Award-nominated singer-songwriter."
