🌟 Check out this fantastic article by the .national Canadian Council for Indigenous Business! Three Indigenous SME business leaders, including our founder Janelle, share their top tips on how to future-proof your business.
Janelle’s advice is packed with wisdom. She talks about the ever-changing nature of the world and how leaders can best adapt to these shifts. Her key points? Stay open-eyed to anticipate changes and align your strategies in ways that honour your values.
“The ever-changing nature of the world means that many of our businesses will have to adapt to survive.
Leaders who are facing the future with their eyes wide open will be in better positions to anticipate which cycles are ending—and which are beginning—and how they can best shift their strategies, teams, offerings, and more so that they can succeed in a way that honours their values.
For Indigenous business leaders, we can apply Seven Generations teachings here, to help us understand our place in this era, and how our businesses can be stewards for large-scale, systemic, and holistic changes for the better.”

Weekend Read ✨ Making Space for Indigenous Feminism! This book bridges generations of powerful Indigenous feminist thinking to demonstrate the movement’s cruciality for today. Indigenous feminists in the first edition fought for feminism to be considered a valid and essential intellectual and activist position. The second edition animated Indigenous feminisms through real-world applications. This third edition, curated by award-winning scholar Gina Starblanket, reflects and celebrates Indigenous feminism’s intergenerational longevity through the changing landscape of anti-colonial struggle and theory. Diverse contributors examine Indigenous feminism’s ongoing relevance to contemporary contexts and debates, including q***r and Two-Spirit approaches to decolonization, gendered and sexualized violence, storytelling and narrative, land-based presence, Black and Indigenous relationalities and more. Feminism has much to offer Indigenous women, and all Indigenous Peoples, in their struggles against oppression.

Also known as “Red Dress Day”, May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whether directly or indirectly targeted by racist institutional and individual violence, Indigenous women are victims of murder at several times the rate of non-Indigenous women. They are also abducted and trafficked at alarming rates.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In Canada alone, there are well over 4,000 missing and murdered. Their families, friends, and communities hang red dresses to symbolize and honour their stolen loved ones, and to create awareness of these continued acts of genocidal violence.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Companies that exploit natural resources like oil and water, and government organizations such as law enforcement, child welfare and health care are directly linked to acts of racist violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, including sexual assault, human trafficking, and murder. Racist beliefs also lead to a lack of urgency in cases of missing Indigenous people: lack of coverage in the media, investigation efforts by law enforcement, and involvement of the general public outside of Indigenous communities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Accountability starts at the individual level, but we must stay focused on holding our governments, institutions, organizations and companies responsible for the extreme violence and loss of life their activities and policies cause.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Government of Canada still does not have a national action plan to end the violence.

Today at the Feminist Business Summit, organized by the ! I finally got to share the stage with our beloved client, HR consultant extraordinaire, and my friend Natalie Bell (.ca ) and meet Bobbi Rose Koe, the inspiring founder of Dinjii Zhuh Adventures, our wonderful moderator Fayza Abdallaoui, founder of Next Level Impact Consulting, and our MC Keisha Paul, founder of Keisha Paul Consulting, who brought the energy! Our panel was about breaking barriers as feminist entrepreneurs, and as always delved into the real s**t of what this kind of work takes. A pleasant surprise, I saw another one of our amazing clients , who was leading a workshop on the Feminist Business Model Canvas. It’s always so wonderful being in these kinds of spaces and seeing how differently things are done when a feminist perspective informs it all, like having stickers to help with pronouns, consent for picture taking and for touching. These seem so small but are ultimately so meaningful. And it’s just a glimpse of beautiful, conscious and caring events, spaces, businesses, organizations, etc can be. ❤️ Thank you so much for having us!

Feminist Entrepreneurs: Leading Change in Canada's Small Business Ecosystem
In the diverse landscape of small businesses in Canada, a growing awareness is emerging—one that recognizes the fundamental importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion to remain competitive and achieve sustainable growth. But some women and gender-diverse entrepreneurs and small business leaders are taking the diversity, equity, and inclusion conversation a step further, adopting multiple shades of feminist approaches to business.
These feminist business leaders are considering their company’s role in the community, the broader social and environmental impacts of the goods or services they offer, and how their business practices uphold or challenge power structures and systems of oppression that have marked their experiences as diverse women and gender-diverse workers in Canada’s economy.
Join this webinar to learn from the experiences of entrepreneurs, business leaders, and educators who are infusing their businesses with feminist values. Panelists will speak to the challenges and opportunities of building, growing, and scaling a feminist small business in Canada. They will point to steps small business owners can take to apply feminist practices in their workplaces.
This event will be taking place in English with simultaneous English-French interpretation and ASL & LSQ interpretation available. English and French captioning provided.

You asked, so we’re answering...
What's a Wordmark? It's a text-only representation of a brand's name, tailored with specific fonts and colours to convey its essence. 🌸
And a Logo? It marries text with a visual symbol, emblem, or mascot, encapsulating a brand's core values. 🌼
On the left, our crafted Wordmarks; on the right, the Logos.

2SLGBTQIA+ children and people deserve safety, respect, and love. All spaces should be safe spaces. All people should be safe people. We believe in creating a kinder, more loving, more understanding, more just world for us all. It starts with treating the most vulnerable among us with love, compassion, and respect. We not only reject colonial narratives of sexuality and gender, but colonization, fascism, and white supremacy in all its forms. There is no space for hate in a better world.
Amanda and Janelle had an amazing time at the IndigenomicsSHE conference in Treaty 1 Territory. So inspiring to hear Indigenous women speak on all things, but especially our collective vision for the future of our economy and our world 🥹
Re:conciliation Project • Brand Development 🌱
Honored to contribute to the Re:conciliation Project's mission of advancing Truth & Reconciliation. When we were developing the brand strategy, thinking on why people would, or should, connect with this brand, we thought about what they would be looking for from an interaction, and how we can impart to people the importance of the brand mission. Soon, we saw the concept of Canadian Identity emerge.
Canadian identity is very strong for many people: for many Indigenous peoples in this country, for Canadians who have been here for generations, for newcomer Canadians. And of course, the Canadian identity that folks are invested in is one of a polite Canada, a peace-keeping Canada, a benevolent Canada. In the mainstream, the Canada we’ve been brought up to know and love is a country that tries to do good.
So the revelation that Canada does indeed have some horrific things to contend with, both past and present, can cause an actual identity crisis for Canadians who align themselves with this “good Canadian” concept.
Our strategy, therefore, with this brand, is to call in Canadians by highlighting that Reconciliation is a core component to reclaiming the Canadian identity of being good people.

We are so thankful for the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH) and the great work they do! Here are some of the top findings from the 2023 State of Women’s Entrepreneurship:
In 2022, 988,400 women in Canada were self-employed.
The number of women-owned businesses is growing—despite the crushing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
By our estimates, 18% of all businesses are majority owned by women in Canada—with more than 99% of these small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Women-owned businesses focus more on innovation and are much more likely than men-owned businesses to put in place marketing innovations.
Not all is rosy. Women have a hard time getting credit through financial institutions. They may not qualify for a loan, because their businesses tend to be smaller, have fewer employees and be in industries hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, like retail and hospitality.
And the average amount of financing for men-owned businesses is about 150% higher than that for women-owned businesses.
The challenges are even greater for women with intersecting identities.
Indigenous women face barriers when accessing western financial services due to systemic exclusion that prevents them from meeting basic approval criteria.
Financing and borrowing costs for Black women entrepreneurs remain challenging; and they, like Indigenous women, must grapple with systemic racism, along with a lack of networking opportunities, mentorship, and training.
Less than 1% of Canadian SMEs are owned by people living with a disability; the data is lacking on how many of these are women entrepreneurs.
There are more than 100,000 businesses in Canada owned by people who identify as 2SLGBTQ+, contributing more than $22 billion in economic activity.
Yet these entrepreneurs face identity-related challenges, including discrimination, difficulty obtaining funding and government assistance, and harsh public evaluation. For more, go to: http://bit.ly/SOWE2023
