Update of 10 August 2024 – 599,544 index records from 61,893 memorials of deeds.

Thanks to the magnificent work of our volunteers we now have 599,544 index records from 61,893 memorials of deeds in the main database and 600,941 townland index transcription records in that database. All of these are, of course, fully searchable.

The highlighted memorial of this update is https://irishdeedsindex.net/mem.php?memorial=227207

This is an update of an earlier indexing by our late friend Rosemary Coleby. It shows how little bits of information tucked away in people other than the parties to the deed. Here there is mention the one of the witnessed Susanna HOLMES was then (in 1775) the wife of William HOLMES-POMEROY was now (in 1781) the wife of John EGAN. Quick checking on-line historic newspapers uncovers John EGAN counsellor-at-law of Cork married the widow HOLMES in August 1779.

This reinforces why having all names indexed is so important to get the most out of this wonderful information repository.

We were very saddened to hear about John Hillman’s passing.

The 105-year-old Second World War Veteran raised more than $450k for charity.

On his 100th birthday, he was inspired by a comrade and began walking laps of his retirement home to raise money for charity. This thoughtful idea received attention and praise from across the country.

He will be missed deeply, but we know his legacy will live on.

We invite you to go for a walk today in honour of Mr. Hillman.

This week's is a book with a catchy title and a Dear Abbey feel found in the back of the MGS library. Brooke found this gem in the General section with many other genealogy how to books!

How many of you have found your proverbial ox in the ditch when researching? Right now mine is grazing in the ditch with a bogged down cart thanks to one branch of my tree😂

WHEN YOUR OX IS IN THE DITCH

Vera McDowell's letters containing practical advice to genealogists first appeared in the Augusta Genealogical Society's newsletter, Southern Echoes, in July 1982, and since then she has become something of a "Dear Abby" in genealogical circles. Mrs. McDowell's emphasis is on problem-solving; thus all her letters bear the unstated refrain: when your ox is in the ditch (i.e., when you're stuck), here's what you do.
