This two-day conference in the framework of the SNSF Singergia project "Reversing the Gaze: Towards Post-Comparative Area Studies" brings together reflections on the use of concepts across borders in social sciences. The first conference day will conclude with a keynote by Shalini Randeria on “Postcolonial perspectives: quo vadis”; the second conference day with a roundtable discussion.

📅 The conference will take place on 12 and 13 September 2024 at the University of Basel.

Just learned about the passing of Gerald Mac Mac Mckenzie this morning in Johannesburg - I am deeply saddened by these news. Mac was part of one of the first concerts with jazz from South Africa that I curated back in October 2004 (Cape Jazz with Robbie Jansen in the lead, Hilton Schilder, Jack Momple and Steven Erasmus) which was followed by a string of projects. In 2006 he used the Goema Captains concept to present his vision of a Cape Town Symphony and subsequently started the Cape Town Composers' Workshop at his home in Athlone and started to compose for orchestra. In order to speed up the process he taught himself notation. We went to many great moments - it was not always easy to cope with his vision, energy and generosity. Thank you Mac for having taken us for this epic ride, which is partly documented in this playlist.

❓ Why African Studies?
💡 Inevitably linked to the colonial conquest, missionaries spread the Christian faith in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Missionaries also set out from Switzerland to the British, German and French colonial empires, particularly from the 19th century onwards. There, they exerted considerable influence on colonial policies and social development – with implications not only for the churches they founded, but also, for instance, in education and healthcare. The values guiding the missionary enterprise were based on an idealized imagination of their society at home, which persists to the present day. It is important to critically reflect on the effect and the importance of these values for our world.
🌍 We study Africa not only to acquire knowledge about the continent, but also to understand our world. Our MA African Studies program helps students develop knowledge about Africa’s past, current and future role in framing the globalized world. It also encourages them to critically engage with global knowledge production and the representation of reality.

❗ Apply now for the MA African Studies at the University of Basel! The application deadline for the fall semester 2024 is 🗓30 April 2024.

❓Why African Studies?
💡Colonial conquest and suppression has caused immense hardship for some and immeasurably benefitted others. The noble intentions of the ‘civilizing mission’ the colonizers’ put forward distracted from the exploitation of human and natural resources. Their actions contradict the values and ideals they transported. These were based on an idealized imagination of their society at home and notions of superiority, which persist to the present day. It is important to critically reflect on the effect and the importance of these values for our world.

❓Why African Studies?
💡Global success of Swiss chocolate is not only based on quality and marketing. Even though Switzerland never formally owned colonies, it has a centuries-old tradition of involvement in global trade. This includes, since the 19th century, the production and trade of cocoa from the Gold Coast, the British colony in West Africa that later became Ghana. This has had lasting implications for economy and society both in Ghana and Switzerland.

❓Why African Studies?
💡Colonial conquest and suppression has caused immense hardship for some and immeasurably benefitted others. The noble intentions of the ‘civilizing mission’ the colonizers’ put forward distracted from the exploitation of human and natural resources. But also actors in countries that never formally owned colonies were – and still are – among the beneficiaries of the colonial project, which laid the basis for the general economic structure of our world. To this day, charitable rhetoric concerning Africa conceals notions of superiority and tangible economic and geopolitical interests.

Citizenship is not a stable condition, but subject to change. It is not a given, but has to be fought for. It can gradually dwindle in phases of public disengagement, motivated by disenchantment with a government or as a result of active exclusion. The workshop will address the temporal dimensions of fluctuating citizenship, affected by crisis, violent conflict and re-foundations of polities, which offer opportunities for mobilization (or resistance), but also potentially new constraints on civil rights.

I am thrilled to see the edition of The Reports of Theophilus Opoku completed and in print. It was a pleasure assisting Michelle Gilbert and Paul Jenkins in getting their mighty project published - thirty years after my first encounter with Opoku in an interdisciplinary seminar with Michelle and Paul. Special thanks go to Sarah Thiele and Ernest Sasu Kwame Sewordor for their assistance, to the Freiwillige Akademische Gesellschaft Basel, the Carl Schlettwein Stiftung, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Missionswissenschaft, and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Basel and the archives of Mission 21 for their support, and to the team of the Fontes Historiae Africanae series for their patience! Afrika-Bulletin Nr. 192: "Auf zwei Kontinenten zuhause" 22/11/2023
