“Humaning Well” – Overcoming the Bugs in our Human Operating System with Matt Gilsenan
Humans have been magnificently programmed to solve problems, but we are prone to do so in ways that lead to new problems and create unproductive conflict.
However, there are concrete ways to work around the bugs in the Human Operating System. Matt Gilsenan, who has been working with the human operating system as an Executive Coach and Intercultural Trainer for nearly two decades, will lead service.
After service, we will enjoy a shared meal from 12:15-13:15. Please bring a plate to share.
From 13:15- 14:30 we will have a facilitated discussion about the Human Operating System. Time will be set aside for a Sociocratic process to choose a common read for our upcoming four fourth-Sunday meetings.
On the upcoming four fourth Sundays we will convene to discuss a common read. Matt nominates “Integral Buddhism and the Future of Spirituality” By Ken Wilber. There are many other worthy books. We ask for your nominations on this coming Sunday.

Rev. Lester grew up reluctantly in the American South before working as a newspaper reporter, supermarket clown, fire tower operator, taxi driver and carnival worker. After several attempts at university, he ran a counter-culture Mexican restaurant that hosted Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and the literary hero of his youth, Jack Kerouac.
During the eighties, Art worked as a village-level volunteer in Kenya, Botswana and the Dominican Republic, becoming a speaker of Swahili and Spanish. In 1992 he finished his ministry training in Britain, and since has been minister to Unitarian congregations in London and Dublin. He has been at Croydon Unitarians in London for sixteen years.
His book, Seeing with Your Ears: Spirituality for Those Who Can’t Believe, won a prestigious US self-published book competition. Another book, The Coffee Table Book of Doom (with Steven Appleby), is published by Random House in the UK and by Penguin in the US. A recent work, Letters in a Bottle, is also available on Amazon.
Art is a joint citizen of the US and the UK. He is married to Gilly Fraser, a script writer and former playwright in residence at London’s Royal Court Theatre.

De-mystifying Mysticism: God 4.0 with Lesley Andrews
As the inspirational core of religion, mystic experience is possibly more cloked in dated metaphor and obscure language than other spiritual subjects. The study of physiology and neurology in the last 100 years demonstrates how mystical altered states are rooted in human nature. The proposition Robert Ornstein makes in God 4.0 is that current and developing knowledge of altered states of consciousness can be the basis to update our knowledge and use of such experiences.
You are invited to bring food to share. After service we will have a shared meal at the Lohnhof, followed by a discussion on the topic.

Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning
In our last meeting, we saw a documentary on the work of Psychiatrist, Neurology researcher and Philosopher Ian McGilchrist.
This upcoming service, Matt Gilsenan will lead us on an exploration of the two ways of seeing the world McGilchrist proposes, their effect on humanity's search for truth and meaning, and how he brings a 21st century perspective to the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Enjoy the service on its own, or you may choose to familiarise yourself with McGilchrist's work by downloading the movie (small fee)
