MAPPING MEMORIES

Inspired by the concepts of inter- and transculturality, a speculative world which is based on a flexible, dynamic and expandable concept of culture has been developed as a semester project. Traveling and settling form the two opposite ways if living. They are connected by storytelling through a universal symbol language. The personal calendar quilt is an object of documentation – it is used for mapping cultural experiences, sharing and expanding them. It is connected to the ritual of appreciation.

Cloudgänger // master-Thesis by Golo Pauleit in collaboration with Marvin Ogger, sandberg instituut, Amsterdam

The practice of Marvin Ogger and Golo Pauleit is concerned with decentralised forms of collectivity. Seeking to lever out gravity by imaginary clouds, that remain within the free fall of capitalism. To open a way through the haze of the present, they create situations, installations and objects that are possible grounds for atmospheric perspectives.

Machine Learning for Visual Research by Olga Borda

We coexist with Artificial Intelligence (AI). This technology is advancing at a spectacular pace and is quickly permeating every sector, with our lives and actions becoming increasingly entwined with algorithms. As creators, our work is also increasingly influenced by these algorithmized processes. This thesis examines the possibilities of image creation using machine learning. Focussing on nature as a frame for understanding and investigating AI technology, this exploration is presented as an open-ended experiment drawn from differing standpoints.

Own for life by Christoph Meyer

Our everyday consumption practices demand a fundamental change. Product design has a major impact on our consumer behaviour: it generates lifestyle and creates material desires. That is why designers bear a great responsibility.
In his work, Christoph Meyer asks the question why users part with products and he tries to find comprehensive answers through literature research and interviews. On this basis, he develops and collects strategies on how designers can extend the useful life of everyday products.

Radical Certainty by Alexandra Auer

The data market claims human experiences as an exploitable raw material. Algorithms calculate an accurate profile of who we are and predict who we will become. The prediction economy has interfered with our lives far beyond the digital. Striving for full certainty the aim is no longer to only predict but to control our behaviour.
Alexandra Auer examines in her master-thesis the mechanisms behind the prediction economy and presents measures to reimpose democratic mechanisms.

Fagus noir by Lars Zinniker & Gabriel Köferli

With a 20 percent occurrence, the beech is the most widespread hardwood tree in Switzerland. Despite its high occurrence in this country and the good properties of the hard wood, only a low added value is achieved with beech wood. Large quantities of beech are burned or exported at low prices to distant countries. "fagus noir" aims to strengthen the value chain of beech wood as a whole by developing a new design-relevant property.
The project deals with a novel modification of the wood's own color and the practical implementation of it.

No Tomorrow Without Today // When dreams become reality

200,000,000. That is the number of garments that are discarded in Switzerland every year. The aim of the collection «No Tomorrow Without Today» is to look for ways to give used clothing a new value. The focus in this work is on the design of the clothes. Only clothes from the Basel area were used for the collection. The different patterns, the bright colours and the asymmetrical shapes of the collection were inspired by a nature garden and by childhood memories of the designer. With her collection, Eva-Maria Schmid wants to develop a proposal on how we can act more sustainably in the future by upcycling used clothes.

Édition tinnef //

People have always collected. We collect perfume bottles, autographs, miniature cranes and old door wedges. Édition Tinnef gives the phenomenon of private collecting (the «collecting for collecting's sake») a stage. The personal relationship of the collector's personal relationship to his/her collection is staged on a digital platform and made publicly accessible. The work is intended to raise questions about the relationship between people and objects and to shed light on the diversity of motivations for collecting.

FRIENDS //

Standing against the expectations of their environment, the five characters show qualities beyond function and comfort. Although they vary in their appearance, they are connected in a deep understanding of each other in being different. The artefacts that Simon Ertl presents are real product friends!
The designer uses irritations in form, surface and function, and thus his Product Friends question contemporary demands, standards and production methods of consumer goods without losing sight of the users. Simon Ertl's furniture and objects celebrate a simultaneity of stubborn and animating tendencies in daily use, enriching the home with an emotional component.
