Integrated Flood Management - A New Approach to Flood Management
The approach of Integrated Flood Management (IFM) gives consideration to the positive as well as the negative aspects of flood waters and to the valuable resource that is represented by the flood plains that these waters occupy on occasions. It integrates land and water resources development in a river basin, within the context of I
💧 Two back-to-back regional workshops on-going in Lomé, Togo - Volta Project 💧
Under the framework of the Project: “Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin”, regional workshops 1) summarizing the results of the trainings on “Nature-based Solutions” and recommendations for the development of concept notes on nature-based solutions for flood and drought management (04 and 05 July 2022) and 2 ) Training of the national and regional forecasters on VOLTALARM myDewetra Early Warning System are currently organized in Lomé Togo.
The first two-day workshop on -based solution bankable project development is attended by various national focal points of the financial institutions or donors such as the Adaptation Fund, Green Climate Fund, Global Environmental facility together with the national representatives from the water resources services.
Following the first workshop, a three-day regional training workshop will be conducted on the VoltAlarm early warning system with the forecasters from the regional organization (Volta Basin Authority, WASCAL, ECOWAS, AGRHYMET) and meteorological and hydrological services of the Volta Basin countries. The training on the VOLTALARM EWS will be an opportunity for the participants to get knowledge on the available hydrological and meteorological observation and forecasting products and tools and acquire skills on the functionalities and usage of the VOLTALARM system for day to day monitoring of the climate change events.
The VFDM project is implemented by the World Meteorological Organization Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and Global Water Partnership-West Africa Africa (GWP-WA) technically supported by CIMA Research Foundation, IUCN Water and Land Management Programme, Italian Civil Protection Department, Knowledge and Awareness Mapping Platform and is funded by the Adaptation Fund.
💧💧💧The 3-days national technical workshop was organized in Accra, Ghana for presenting to the National and regional stakeholders of the Volta Basin region, the Volta risk profile for floods and droughts, based on the results of the risk maps developed by CIMA Research Foundation and VU University researchers with the probabilistic approach. The overall outcome of the workshop was to gather feedbacks and suggestions about recommendations and key messages for an action plan for risk prevention and (mid-to-long term) management strategies.
The National workshop in Accra was attended by more than 20 participants mainly from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), Disaster Management, Water Resources commission, Geographic Institute, Municipal Assembly, etc.
In the opening ceremony, the honorable Minister Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah, from Ministry of Sanitation and Water resources was present with the representative of Autorité du Bassin de la Volta - Volta Basin Authority, Water Resources Commission Ghana - WRC and World Meteorological Organization
Similar National workshops are planned in other Volta Basin countries during April and May 2022.

👉 Happening Now ❗ A two-day regional workshop to present the flood and drought risk maps and climate scenario for the Volta Basin region.
The Volta Flood and Drought Management ( ) project team (World Meteorological Organization, Volta Basin Authority, Global Water Partnership-West Africa) with the technical support of CIMA Research Foundation are organizing a joint two-day regional workshop on 20 (yesterday) and 21 (today) December 2021 for the National stakeholders to deliver knowledge on Vulnerability, Capacities, Exposures and Risks (VCER’s) database, Floods and Drought risk maps, Climate Scenarios for the Volta Basin and to gather feedbacks and suggestions for improvement.
More than 40 participants are attending the regional workshop mainly the Directors or nominated senior experts from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, Civil protection or disaster management, Water resources in the Volta Basin.
For the risk maps development, 61 National technicians (working in Meteorology, hydrology, water resources, geographical institute, researchers etc.) were mobilized in the six countries of the Volta basin (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali and Togo) between April- December 2021. These technicians supported in data collection and have followed with interest online and face-to-face trainings regarding the preparation of scenario-based exposure and impact maps with the support of the CIMA Research Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for environmental studies (IVM) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam).
The flood and drought risk maps (using both scenario-based and probabilistic approach) and climate scenario developed will be useful for strengthening the National preparedness and response to the climate change events.

Hail can really make you sit up and take notice - and it certainly has across many parts of Australia recently. Large accumulations of hail turned the ground white in Perth yesterday, and severe thunderstorms have produced giant hail across parts of Queensland and New South Wales.
Severe hailstorms can damage homes and cars, shred trees and destroy crops, and even cause life-threatening injuries.
How big hail gets depends on the strength of the updraft in the thunderstorm where it forms. Hailstones in severe thunderstorms are kept aloft for longer and have more time to grow.
A hailstone, which fell near Yalboroo to the North of Mackay in Queensland, has established a new record for Australia. Hailstones measuring 16 cm in diameter were observed, eclipsing the previous record of 14 cm, set in 1991 in Kempsey, New South Wales and again in 2020 in southeast Queensland.
📷This hail image was captured at Yalboroo near Mackay, Queensland on Tuesday 19 October 2021. This particular stone came through the windscreen of a car. During hailstorms you should seek shelter immediately and if driving pull over in a safe place.
So, how does hail form, and should you run for cover if it is forecast? Find out more here: http://ow.ly/wV7A50Gx2yi
Showers and storms are likely again on Wednesday, however they are unlikely to posses large hail. The risk of large-to-giant hail will return for northeast NSW on Thursday ahead of a large severe thunderstorm outbreak day on Friday for eastern Australia.

Our Story
Whether due to natural climate variability or climate change, the likelihood of extreme weather conditions is increasing. The impacts include more frequent and severe floods and droughts, which affect the lives of millions of people and cause great economic losses. Building resilience to these events and helping countries to become more water secure requires an integrated approach to water resources management. Integrated Flood Management merges land use, water resource and risk management in a river basin, with a view to maximizing the benefits from using floodplains and minimizing the loss of life and property from floods. Integrated Drought Management mitigates drought risk and builds drought resilience by addressing multiple components of drought management, including disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation strategies and national water policies.
