US-CA: At least 16 people were injured, several structures and vehicles were damaged after police failed to safely dispose of illegal fireworks seized from a South Los Angeles home on Wednesday, June 30.
The explosion rocked the neighbourhood after police attempted to dispose of over 2,000 kgs of fireworks, which were found earlier in the day, in an armoured container, according to local reports.
The explosion destroyed the container, injuring at least 16 people, including Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD ) officers and residents.
Three people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, local media reported.
The bomb squad was called to the scene to help with the operation, as some of the explosives would be sent away to be detonated elsewhere, while others were due to be destroyed on-site.
LAPD said the blast happened as some of the illegal fireworks were being stored in their bomb squad trailer as a precautionary measure, adding that the cause of the incident was under investigation.
Police discovered the explosives near a home after officers received a tip, and arrested an unidentified man on suspicion of possessing fireworks, according to media reports citing local officials.

CANADA: Stunning timelapse footage captured at Charlie Lake in eastern British Columbia showed noctilucent clouds which formed with a glimpse of the aurora taken between 1:00 to 3:00 a.m. PDT.
“What’s better than watching the noctilucent clouds with a hint of lady aurora come out afterwards? Absolutely nothing,” said Jeff Adams who captured the footage.
Noctilucent clouds (NLCs), or night-shining clouds, are phenomena of ice crystals in the sky that are only able to be seen during astronomical twilight.
These clouds are most commonly spotted in the Northern Hemisphere in the summer months of June and July, and can only form in the highest part of the atmosphere, typically at an altitude of around 80 kilometres.

CANADA: An Alberta resident captured a timelapse video on Wednesday, June 30, showing a pile of gummy bears melting in the extreme temperatures that have been gripping parts of western Canada and the Pacific Northwest in recent days.
The uploader of the video said in the caption that it took an hour for the gummy bears to melt into a “gummy puddle” adding that “the sour cherry gummies are much more resilient.”
The unprecedented heatwave in western Canada has seen all-time temperature records broken for three days straight with the village of Lytton, British Columbia, recording a staggering 49.6 degrees Celcius on Tuesday, according to media reports.
A statement by the chief coroner of British Columbia, Lisa Lapointe, quoted by CNN on Wednesday said that there had been a “significant increase in deaths reported where it is suspected that extreme heat has been contributory.”
The statement by Lapointe added that 233 deaths had been reported from Friday through Monday whereas the usual number for a four-day period would be 130.

HONG KONG: Crowds gathered outside the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily building and queued across Hong Kong to buy copies of its final edition after authorities froze its assets under a new Beijing-imposed national security law.
Hong Kong residents braved the rain in the early hours of Thursday, June 24, to show support for Apple Daily staff outside its building, as scores queued in front of newsstands to snap the paper’s last edition.
Apple Daily announced its closure on Wednesday “in view of staff members’ safety” and that it would “cease operation immediately after midnight”, after asset freezes and a string of arrests.
Hundreds of police officers raided the Apple Daily offices last Thursday arresting five editors and executives, who have been charged under the controversial national security law.
Local media reported that two further journalists at Apple Daily were arrested on Wednesday including a columnist and a reporter – the charges were not immediately clear.
Apple Daily is owned by pro-democracy activist and tycoon Jimmy Lai, who was arrested last year under the same law, on charges relating to the protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019.
China imposed the national security law in Hong Kong in June last year, which led to to the arrest of several pro-democracy activists and politicians.

FRANCE: An American special effects artist living in Bordeaux set the internet alight and confused many residents of the French city after he posted a video of a tram made to look like a bottle of red wine zipping through the streets.
Ian Padgham published the video of the tram looking like a bottle of Château de Cérons on June 8 and it soon attracted a lot of attention. As of the time of writing it has been viewed more than 600,000 times on Twitter and more than 12,000 times on Instagram.
The day before he published the “bottle tram” video, he posted a video of a bus made to look like a baguette, which has been viewed almost a million times on Twitter.
The “bottle tram” video is only ten seconds long, but looked so realistic that Bordeaux’s transit authority took to Twitter to ensure residents that there was not, in fact, a tram looking like a bottle driving around in the city.
Padgham is reportedly a well-known figure in Bordeaux who has for a number of years been incorporating locations and landmarks in Bordeaux into his special effect videos.
The video of the “bottle tram” was published just over a week before the Bordeaux Wine Festival begins on June 17 which might help explain why some internet users were convinced it was real.

US-MI: At least five waterspouts were spotted over northern Lake Michigan on Wednesday morning, June 22, to the delight of onlookers.
The International Centre For Waterspout Research (ICWR) forecast the phenomenon, which was later confirmed by eyewitnesses capturing the sights on camera.
It took place as water “temperatures were nearing 15 Celsius, while temperatures about five kilometres off the ground were struggling near 4.5 Celsius”, local forecasters said.
Waterspouts are usually more of an autumn phenomenon, as “cold air typically rolls over relatively warmer lake water,” they added.

THAILAND: Video captured by a scuba diver reveals a large fishing net trapped in a coral reef off the small island of Koh Losin in the Gulf of Thailand.
The diver who filmed the video was on a liveaboard dive trip between June 11 and 13 when he spotted the net and told the EBU he was shocked by how big it was.
“It covered most area of the hard coral gardens around the dive site. I previously had done a couple of diving trips to Losin in the last couple of years but I had never seen Losin reef this bad before,” diver and photographer said.
‘Ghost nets’, such as the one found in Losin, can have a devastating impact on coral reefs, by breaking the reefs and preventing healthy growth, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

SPACE: On Thursday, June 10, people across the northern hemisphere will have the chance to experience an annular or partial eclipse of the Sun.
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth, fully or partially blocking the Sun’s light in some areas. During an annular eclipse, the Moon is far enough away from Earth that the Moon appears smaller than the Sun in the sky. Since the Moon does not block the entire view of the Sun, it will look like a dark disk on top of a larger, bright disk. This creates what looks like a ring of fire around the Moon. People in parts of Canada, Greenland, and northern Russia will experience the annular eclipse.
In some places, viewers won’t get to see this ring around the Moon. They’ll instead experience a partial solar eclipse. This happens when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not exactly lined up. The Sun will appear to have a dark shadow on only part of its surface. Viewers in parts of the eastern United States and northern Alaska will see a partial solar eclipse on June 10, along with Canada and parts of the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and northern Africa.
In the United States, the partial eclipse will be visible along parts of the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, and Northern Alaska. In many of these locations, the eclipse will occur before, during, and shortly after sunrise. This means that viewers will need to get a clear view of the horizon during sunrise to see the eclipse.

US-OR: Oregon Zoo shared a video of its resident elephant Samudra enjoying a mud bath on June 9.
For elephants, mudslinging is a way of life. These giants produce a lot of body heat, and lack sweat glands. Mud wallowing serves several purposes, including sunblock, parasite removal and cooling agent.
Water evaporates slowly through mud, which keeps elephants cooler than a dip in the pool. After a wallow, elephants may give themselves a dirt shower to create a thicker coating. And that’s the dirt on mud baths!

BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA: Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has lost an appeal against his conviction for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity ending the last major Balkans war crime trial before a UN court.
A panel of five judges on Tuesday found that Mladic, 78, had not provided enough evidence to overturn his 2017 conviction that handed him a life sentence for his role in the killing of about 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebenica in 1995.
The verdict by the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals is final and cannot be appealed.
Prosecutors had also brought a second appeal to extend Mladic’s conviction for crimes committed against Bosnian Muslim in other areas during the conflict, which was also rejected by the judges.

TURKEY: A mucus-like organic matter known as ‘sea snot’ has been clogging up parts of Turkey’s coastline since late December last year.
Scientists have warned that the gloopy, gelatinous substance is the result of global warming and can have a devastating impact on marine life.
The sea snot was first reported in Turkish waters in 2007 and is created in areas with abundant nutrients in the water and during periods of prolonged warm temperatures and calm weather.
The sea snot is not usually a problem, but when the phytoplankton grows out of control, the substance can suffocate marine life, impacting the breeding grounds for fish while also impacting immobile organisms like coral.

ECUADOR: Tests have confirmed that a giant tortoise found on the Galápagos Islands in 2019 is from a species scientists believed to have died out more than a century ago.
A team from Yale University compared DNA taken from the female tortoise with a sample taken in 1906 from a male member of the Chelonoidis phantasticus species – and the pair were found to be a match.
“The investigation confirms that this individual belongs to the Chelonoidis phantasticus, a species declared extinct since 1906. This confirmation gives us lots of hope to continue programmes to save the land tortoises of the Galapagos islands,” Danny Rueda Córdova, Director of the Galapagos National Park said.
Giant tortoise populations were devastated throughout the 19th century by whalers and buccaneers, the Galapagos National Park said, adding that volcanic eruptions in the past may have impacted tortoise populations as well.
The park estimates the current tortoise population on the Galapagos Islands to be around 60,000.

ISRAEL: Police in Israel dispatched forces and deployed water cannon to several cities across the country on Tuesday night, May 11, to disperse Palestinian protesters.
Police said violence erupted across several towns including Acre, Umm al-Fahm and Haifa where they deployed water cannon and detained a number of Palestinian protesters who were throwing stones at security forces.
Elsewhere, Israel has ramped up its airstrikes on Gaza Strip, killing 35 Palestinians including 12 children, according to Palestinian health ministry, in response to the barrage of rockets that Hamas militants continued to launch on the country.
In Israel, at least 5 people have been killed on Tuesday night as a result of rockets being fired from Gaza, according to a military spokesman.
Palestinian Ministry of Health said 233 Palestinians were also injured due to the Israeli airstrikes that continued into the early hours of Wednesday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile, warned that Hamas “will pay a very heavy price for their aggression.”
The sharp escalation, the most intense since a 50-day war in 2014, follows days of violence in east Jerusalem amid protests over the possible eviction of several Palestinian families in the predominantly Palestinian Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood to make way for Israeli settlers.
On Monday more than 300 Palestinians were wounded when Israeli security forces raided Al Aqsa-Mosque, firing tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets.
The rocket fire came after Hamas issued an ultimatum, calling on Israel to remove its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound following the attack on Palestinian worshippers.
