"Through prosody, we express tenderness, or anger, or enthusiasm, or any number of other nuanced emotional states that give the human voice its peculiar power to woo, persuade, threaten, cajole and mollify. Prosody makes the difference between the affectless utterances of HAL, the computer in 2001, and the rich and expressive instrument of Morgan Freeman or Meryl Streep – or even just the lilting, songlike way you say “Hello” when you answer the phone, so your caller doesn’t think you’re a machine. The term comes from the ancient Greek: pros, meaning “toward”, and ody, meaning “song”. We speak toward song."
"The enterprise of being human is to carve out a congenial place to occupy in the world, an achievement that we know intuitively depends to a frightening extent on how our voices sound in the ears of others. To alter your voice in ways that conform better to the person you feel yourself to be, or that you wish you were, means changing, fundamentally, who you are."

One of my most favourite Christmas songs to sing, with its lilting melody, beautiful chord progressions and the opportunity to include a lot of dynamics in the song. This Christmas is going to be so different for most people all over the world, and I hope music continues to help get us through these tough times.
Sooo grateful to be part of this Complete Vocal Institute class filled with amazing people and singers who make it such a fun and safe environment for learning and growth. I signed up for their 1 year course as part of my efforts to keep upgrading my knowledge as a singer, and am absolutely enjoying myself. Thank you CVI for introducing such a progressive and non-judgmental vocal pedagogy to the world. Its only been a few months, but I've learnt so much and adopted so many new and improved perspectives on singing! 🙏🏻🎵

For singers mortally afraid of making mistakes when they sing. ❤

Learning how to sing in harmony is challenging but fun! Kudos to Tatiana and Isobel for putting in the effort to try and learn their different parts. It can be really hard not to get distracted by the other person's vocal part. The key is to eventually train your ears to recognize the sound of the entire harmonic interval when you're singing with another person.
Back to school!! The quest for new knowledge never ends. I'm super excited!!! 😍😍😍

Love Lianne La Havas' version of this song as she dances through the song with her voice, combining several vocal techniques so artfully to create such nuance and dynamics in her delivery.
This song is for everyone out there during these difficult times. Let's keep praying and feeling good vibes for each other, regardless of background or differences in opinions.

Feeling extremely grateful to all my clients who have decided to continue having lessons online. This support means a great deal to me. Will do my utmost best to continue providing lessons that give you the same value as face to face lessons. Thank you so much. 💓🙏🏻
It's not at all uncommon for students to tell me they wanna sound like Billie Eilish, or Ariana Grande, or Sam Smith. Which is totally cool, because you need to have an inspiration to learn how to produce a certain type of sound. But I wouldn't recommend that to be a singer's ultimate goal. Why not aim higher, and learn how to sound like yourself? 😉
In today's vocal workout, I am focusing on managing the amount of breath I use to sing, and balancing that with a nice amount of resonance in my oral cavity (or to put it simply, my mouth).
Singing with such balance improves your pitching, reduces strain in your laryngeal muscles, and as a result it also becomes easier to do vocal runs and transit from your lower to your higher register. Lots of benefits! 😍
P.S. Decided to leave the mistakes in because it's only human to make mistakes! ;)
Here's the minutes of where each exercise starts so you can fast forward if necessary.
1:14 Scales through a straw starting from the note A2
3:00 Scales through a straw starting from the note D2
7:19 Ascending root major arpeggio, descending dominant seventh arpeggio starting from the note A2
8:17 Ascending root major arpeggio, descending dominant seventh arpeggio starting from the note D2
9:48 Scales descending with "Oh" starting from the note B4
11:21 Practising with Adele's Skyfall
If this self-isolation situation has made you feeling like your vocal tract is a little neglected from not speaking much to other people, and your larynx is getting a little stiff and rusty, feel free to join me in my own regular vocal workout! I'm going to be filming myself while I do my personal vocal workout and share it twice a week.
Today's workout is focused on singing without tongue root tension. Do you wonder why you sometimes sound a little strained and squeaky when you sing in your higher register? Or why you feel tired quite easily after singing? Maybe it's because the root of your tongue is tensing too much when you're singing certain notes.
Relieving tongue root tension can lead to more clarity in your voice and less strain in your instrument.
Feel free to leave comments if you have any questions or feedback! :)
Coronavirus ain't gonna stop us from singing together!!!
In light of the current COVID-19 situation, here are some measures we are taking to be responsible and contain the spread.
1. All equipment and door handles are wiped down after every lesson.
2. Students must wash their hands before and after their lesson. (Sorry for the temporary inconvenience. But at least my hand soap smells quite nice! 😜 )
3. For students who prefer to stay in the comfort of their homes, Skype lessons are offered at half the price of the regular rate.
4. I am also able to travel to your place for lessons if you have a piano or keyboard at home for an additional €10 on top of the regular rate. And I have hand sanitiser with me. 😃
Please stay strong and healthy and positive during this uncertain period. Drink LOTS of warm water because warm water can help to kill the virus!! (Also helps to expand your vocal tract and makes it easier to sing.)
Trying to be responsible and help reduce risks of spreading any viruses, Covid-19 or not, by wiping down all the equipment every day after lessons!
Super inspired by Patsy Rodenburg's The Right To Speak. So I printed a poster with some of her wise words on it. Hope it'll inspire my clients too! 😊
"If God doesn't mind a bum note, why should we?"
From Patsy Rodenburg's The Right To Speak
This is insanely gorgeous. Didn't expect to tear up..
Doggos are welcome to join our singing lessons too! 😜
This is something I do with my young female students while practising breath support and healthy projection: reading these quotes out loud.
The first step to building a good strong voice is to believe in your voice.
"His phrasing was subtle, delicate and sweet, or energetic and slamming. He was able to find the right colouring or expressive nuance for each word."
^ In my opinion, finding nuance in your singing voice can sometimes be more important than being purely focused on technique. This way, you also enjoy singing a lot more as you find your vocal identity and the meaning in the words that you sing.

Singing for Therapy At the end of each year, I often like to think about how far I've come, how much more I can grow, and what else I can do that I haven't done or haven
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! ❤
It's also the season to be extra giving, and I've been thinking deeply about how I would like to give this year in a more meaningful and effective way...
For a good part of my life, I've often felt like I was swimming against strong currents of never-ending personal problems. But every time it felt like it was too much and I was going to drown and never see the surface again, a hand would reach out from somewhere and pull me up so that I could keep swimming until I found the shore.
I'm now at a place in my life where I've found my shore, and I want to give back and maybe be this hand for whoever that may need it.
This is for anyone who might be experiencing depression, anxiety, burnout, or any kind of mental exhaustion. I would like to give an hour a week of my time to you with no charge to sing together, talk, have tea, and sing somemore. I will not try to solve your problems or give you advice that you don't want. But let's just turn your troubles into songs. Because music can be so powerful for healing your soul.
This is available for as long as I'm available. PM me privately if you'd like to arrange something. ❤😊
Merry Christmas once again, and have a meaningful New Year!
It was a gorgeous and beautiful day, the sun was out, generously allowing its rays to shine into our space, even though the weather forecast said it was going to rain. Our place was filled with warmth and laughter, and very importantly, LOTS OF MUSIC.
Here are some gorgeous pictures of that wonderful day by the lovely Nadia Tsvileva.
SO MUCH GEZELLIG VIBES YESTERDAY. I CAN'T BELIEVE WE DID IT. 💕💕💕🔥🔥🔥😭😭😭
My heart feels so so so full.
Photos will be out soon!!

Hard at work preparing for our very first student showcase tomorrow, and a part of me is thinking "I think I'm slightly crazy."
20 people will be squeezing into our living room, and we've got 20 songs to learn, snacks and refreshments to prepare for everyone...
But seeing how all my students have been working so hard practising the songs and taking pride in their singing really warms my heart, and I know all these efforts are 100% worth it.
Someone offered to bring minced pies and sparkling wine, another made some Christmas decorations for the event, all these gestures made out of a giving and supportive spirit gives me so much fuzzy feelings in my heart. I'm very thankful to my students for injecting the Heart&Soul into everything we do. ❤🔥
Happy Sinterklaas everyone! May your day be filled with good music and spent with good people. 💕
Harmonies are tough, but I think we're getting there!! 😍
Feeling super excited for the harmony workshop for my youth students this Saturday morning! Singing in harmony can add so much more depth and nuance to a song. And beyond that, you feel a visceral connectedness with your fellow singers.
