The Institute’s strategic location in the heart of International Geneva enables students to regularly hear from professionals at the heart of the international scene and to build strong personal and professional networks with legal practitioners, preparing them for successful international careers.

Meet Abhimanyu George Jain 👋 a recent PhD graduate in International Law who won the prestigious SNIS (Swiss Network for International Studies) Award 2024 for his thesis:
" Leaf: A Critical Analysis of the Law of Targeting".
"My arguments is that the law of targeting does not actually balance military necessity and humanity. Instead, humanity is a fig leaf that conceals and legitimises the pursuit of military necessity. (...) It is a tremendous honour to receive this award, and I'm especially gratified that my thesis has been recognised for its interdisciplinarity and policy relevance.
(...) After completing my thesis, I took up a position as legal adviser at the Committee of the Red Cross. This is proving to be a wonderful opportunity to develop and deploy my knowledge of the international legal regulation of warfare.

Discover the Outdoors Initiative !🌄
The Outdoors Initiative is a public interest association that supports students' well-being and encourages the accessibility of sports and mountains as well as the discovery of Geneva's surroundings
Fanelly Ronsin, president of the initiative for 2023-2024 and MINT student gives us some examples of activities: "In February, we organised a ski trip with 50 students to the Portes du Soleil. Last semester, we had very committed running and swimming groups, who would meet up a few times during the week to either go for a run with Ben and Jane, or for a swim with Lara. We also had a sailing day organised mid-September with a welcome apéro by the lake at the end of the day. Additionally, we organised a hike to La Dôle at the beginning of the semester, an ice-skating evening, trekking workshop, futsal and football tournament, support team to the marathon runners, movie nights, skiing days, and much more! "
Early 2024 saw the publication of nine books by Geneva Graduate Institute faculty that span the Institute's areas of expertise and provide exceptional insight on the contemporary world:
From an evaluation of the depoliticisation of the world, to a global ethnography of Afghanistan, a volume on youth sexuality in postward Britain, a consideration of the Kremlin vs the West.

Our Story
The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the study of world affairs, with a particular emphasis on the cross-cutting fields of international relations and development issues.
The Institute was founded further to the establishment of the League of Nations in 1927. It was the first institution in the world entirely dedicated to the study of international affairs. In order to better address the world’s global challenges, it later reinforced its positioning by combining the studies of international relations and development.
Through our core activities, we aim to promote international cooperation and make a contribution to the progress of developing societies. More broadly, we endeavour to develop creative thinking on the major challenges of our time, foster global responsibility and advance respect for diversity.
We are a cosmopolitan community located in the heart of Geneva, an international city and a centre of global governance. By intensely engaging with international organisations, NGO’s, governments and multinational companies, we participate in global discussions and prepare future policy-makers to lead tomorrow’s world.
