A vélo contre le cancer. Me and my daughter Emily are in this week's L'illustre as we prepare to cycle around Lake Geneva to support the childhood cancer charity, "Zoé4Life". In the article we talk about Emily's diagnosis, treatment and recovery. We really like the article and the accompanying photos, even though we were talking about an incredibly difficult period of our lives.
Like every year, I'd like to ask you to support the Ride4Zoé. Childhood cancer is considered a rare disease and research into cures is under-funded, even though it is one of the leading causes of death amongst children.
I'm going to ride 175 kilometers (110 miles) but I believe that Zoé4Life does the hard miles in raising money, helping families, funding research and lobbying politicians.
If you'd like to make a donation, please do so here: https://zoe4life.givingpage.org/donation-fr
You can read more about the ride here: https://ride4zoe.com/accueil/
Thank you!
Matthew

At one point, Ann Arbor had the highest number of bookstores per capita of any city in America.
Wahr's. Ulrich's. David's. Shaman Drum. Borders.
Nothing lasts forever. So many bookstores have been protagonists in the long story of bookselling in this town. But over the years, the plots change, the characters disappear, the story changes.
Today is Independent Bookstore Day. So let this be a reminder:
Don't wait for an announcement of closure to tell a business you love them, you miss them, how sad you are they're disappearing. Don't wait for rents to rise so rapidly that a business moves locations to look around and say, "Man, I wish we had a bookstore downtown." And please don't wait for a once-a-year Independent Bookstore Day to visit your local indie bookshop.
We can't have a world owned by a few corporations governing the books we read; yet, that's what's happening. We can't have our downtowns dictated by a few landlords; yet, that's what's happening. We can't have our collective creativity owned by a few billionaires armed with private equity and algorithms; yet, that's what's happening.
Indie shops keep alive the books and authors that are actually important and vital to our species simply because we believe in them and love them. We keep the important books out of the recycling bin, demand they be reprinted, thrust them into the arms of our fellow humans and say, "Read this. You must read this."
But make no mistake, the game is on, the homogeneous march of corporate-think is here, and if we all don't put our money where our hearts are, then all those glorious signs around town that say "BOOKS" get painted over, boarded up, and demolished. Indie businesses are the ones who host events, who believe in their communities, who hire your neighbors, who donate to your causes, who make the world a little more fun and vibrant.
Visit one today.
And, more importantly, the day after, too.
