Gravel shortage, recycled concrete - 6 students explored the different views of stakeholders and conflicts over those resources in Switzerland. Their approach was appreciated, by stakeholders and also by students from other disciplines.

About the future of gravel and concrete Despite being famous for its mountainous landscape, Switzerland is suffering from a shortage of gravel – the main component of concrete. Estimations show that it will run short of mineable gravel resources within the next 40 years.

ForDev is not the only one using role-playing games. Ulrich Creative Simulations (UCS) organize workshops, game sessions and coachings on the use of serious games.
They run the New Commons Game, simulating challenges to sustainable management in fisheries - well known to most of USYS students at ETH from their first days of studies.

Bachelor students in environmental sciences at ETH took the political discourse about the wolf in Switzerland as a case study and developed their own role-playing games.
The assignment was given by WWF Switzerland who was looking for a negotiation game about the wolf in Switzerland to use for their training about wolf and bear for hiking guides in the canton of Grison.
During the WWF training, the game was successfully played by 18 hiking guides, subdivided in two groups. In the lively debate, the players exchanged their arguments and tried to find allies in financing the respective measures. Over the course of the game, the realized the importance of listening to each other’s arguments and collaborating to find satisfactory solutions. The participants had a lot of fun and the game was the starting point of discussions far into the night.
WWF was very content with the game. As a further step, WWF is considering to use it as a teaching material for teenage students. This is a good example for how topics that are relevant in the practice can be tackled in a theoretical context and how the results can be brought back to practice – strengthening the exchange between science and practice.

Another form of outreach

Great Friday guys!! As you can see in the image below not everyone is asleep at night. We are glad to see that the wildlife in our reserve is alive and well, just like this cute ocelot. Beekeeping to prevent the pollination problem? Wild bees pollinate our crops, and in doing so produce much of the food on which the world depends. But the destruction of their natural habitats, mostly due to agricultural spread and intensification, means we are losing these valuable insects. A Documentary Film - coming in 2016
This is a film about the PEOPLE living in the Alaotra region in Madagascar, and about the CHANGES in their social and natural environments.
This is also a film about the BANDRO, the Alaotra gentle lemur (Hapalemur alaotrensis), that can survive only in the marshes surrounding the lake, and that is facing extinction due to these changes.
This is also a film about RESEARCH; on how to tackle complexity and grasp change. The AlaReLa (Alaotra Resilience Landscape) project aims to understand the various livelihood strategies of people like farmers or fishers, who use the lake, the marshes, and the land surrounding the lake to produce food and charcoal and other sources of energy. The scientist's goal in the AlaReLa project is to engage with and inform decision makers responsible for the governance of such complex socio-ecological systems as the Alaotra.
Follow us to some of Madagascar's hidden places - far away from the touristic centers - to find out what can happen when derivates of our modern times seep slowly into traditional ways of living. What can be done to strike a balance between yesterday and tomorrow; between conservation and development?
