In 2022, TeksGlobal imploded on the weight of its own success. While they succeeded in getting thousands of Cameroonians contributing over 5 billion F CFA towards investments, they didn’t have investments of up to 10% of that capital contribution. It was a classic Ponzi scheme, though we might argue if the intention from initiation was to defraud an unsuspecting public.

Most who know me in person know I tend to see things others overlook or underestimate, take into consideration very silent variables that tend to have huge implications and most importantly think creatively around challenges. This has been me for a very long time. These abilities made my secondary school classmates nicknamed me Einstein.

Today, I use these and more skills to run Genie Capital an investment and property management company (Genie Property Management is the property management brand). I could say we run one of the best property management companies in Cameroon. We have an amazing team of professionals who are diligent in their work and deliver an excellent experience to all our customers — owners, guests and tenants. We started as amateurs in 2019 and we have learned our way to being one of the best. We have operations in Buea, Limbe, Douala & Yaoundé. We manage guest houses, residential and commercial buildings.

Property Management is still informally treated by most property owners, who most often use relatives and friends to manage their estates. Sometimes, the relatives and friends do and amazing job. But most times, there are lots of issues with their approach. Worst of all, there’s little or no improvements in their methods or systems.

One of our biggest innovations is our Tenant Screening Methodology. It’s enabled us to w**d out problematic tenants from our first encounter with them. In addition to that, we constantly educate our tenants through our Genie Tenant Services initiatives.

Email or phone number?

Some months back, I was involved in the design review for an app that was targeting the Cameroonian mass market. As expected, in the signup and login workflows, the authentication was based on email and password. When I looked at it, I asked the team “Out of work, how many people in your personal and professional networks use emails frequently?” They thought for a while and most of them replied “Very few”. The question and the response seeded a thought in their heads. As we went about the review, we all realised the standard signup and login workflows aren’t the best for the Cameroonian mass market. We had to look at what most people already use on a daily, so we resorted to telephone numbers and PINs.

We often look at applications that are making waves in other parts of the world and create copies that we hope will conquer our local markets like the originals did in their home markets. Most often, we face harsh realities as these copycats stumble in the market after one iteration to another. In our frustration, we curse the market, our fellow citizens and sometimes blame witches and wizards. We hardly ever think our design choices could be the problem.

Take a moment to ponder about this insight…
While most millennial and older generations of Americans got introduced to computing through computers which were used mainly at the offices/schools for work/study, in Cameroon the bulk of the millennial and older generations of the population got introduced to computing through mobile phones used mainly for personal communication, entertainment and gaming. As for gen Z and younger the world over, they were introduced to computing through consoles and mobile phones. These differences in the tool of introduction significantly shapes the preferred user experiences of individuals in the various groups.

If you’re a UI/UX designer or you’re part of the team developing an app, it’s in your best interest to understand such details. That way you know if you’re using the standard UX of email and password or you’ll have to tweak it to something else.
