In 1988, President Ronald Regan proclaimed October Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is observed on October 15th each year and includes the International Wave of Light.
In the United States, 1 out of every 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage and 1 and every 160 pregnancies end in stillbirth. These numbers do not include infant death from preterm labor, diagnosis of life-limiting conditions, or SIDS.
But, the courageous parents at PALS know that these are more than just numbers. These are our babies.
And, because of these precious babies, we will forever have footprints on our hearts.
Pregnancy After Loss Support is honoring Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss Awareness Month 2023 with our campaign. We hope youâll join us in telling the stories of your babies who died.

Each year in the United States, hundreds of people die during pregnancy or in the year after. Thousands more have unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery with serious short- or long-term health consequences.
Every pregnancy-related death is tragic, especially because more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are preventable. Recognizing urgent maternal warning signs, providing timely treatment, and delivering respectful, quality care can prevent many pregnancy-related deaths

According to the Violence Policy Center, Black women in the U.S. were three times more likely to be murdered in domestic abuse situations and 90% of black female victims know their killers.
According to the CDC, domestic violence is one of the leading causes of death for Black women ages 15-35. Black femicide is also a global issue. In 2021, Africa had the second-largest number of female intimate partner and family-related killings, trailing China by just a few hundred deaths.

Understanding The Epidemic Of Femicide: What It Is And How To Stop It The term femicide rarely enters the U.S. lexicon.
According to the CDC, domestic violence is one of the leading causes of death for black women between the ages of 15-35.
These disturbing statistics point directly to the failures of black men and itâs disappointing. Society programs black men to be the protectors and providers, but instead many chose to be the predator. Protecting black women should be the priority for every black man in that womanâs life. Protecting her means saving children, revitalizing black family structures, and strengthening the black community overall.

A brutal attack on a 25-year-old woman, Zizipho Nikita Kalubi, in South Africa resulted in the surgical removal of her severely damaged left eye.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 26, as Kalubi and her boyfriend were going about their day in Somerset West, Cape Town.
The attacker, an admirer of the victim whom she had encountered a few times in Khayelitsha Town Two, began harassing her when he spotted her with her boyfriend.
He started making inappropriate comments and catcalls, escalating his behaviour despite her attempts to ignore him.
Kalubi recalled the terrifying ordeal, saying, âAs a young woman, Iâm no stranger to harassment from men. When he began with his lewd remarks and said, âHey sexy, I want you,â I tried to brush it off and continued walking with my boyfriend.
so bold with my boyfriend present. However, that day, he became increasingly aggressive and approached us.â
Recognizing the escalating threat, Kalubiâs boyfriend confronted the harasser, urging him to leave her alone.
They resumed walking, but to their horror, the attacker reappeared shortly thereafter. This time, he struck Kalubi in the face with a brick, causing her to lose consciousness.
Kalubi recounted waking up later and realizing she was admitted to Khayelitsha Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to Tygerberg Hospital for further treatment.
The medical assessment at Tygerberg revealed that her left eye was severely damaged and had to be surgically removed. Additionally, she was informed that her nose had been fractured during the assault.
Concerned for her daughterâs well-being, Kalubiâs mother sought a second opinion at Vergelegen Hospital in Somerset.

Though the risk of death within the first year of losing a spouse increases for everyone, it actually decreases within the first weeks following their death. The study doesn't theorize why, but experts who weren't involved with the research think that this could potentially reflect the short period of increased support from friends and family that mourners often experience.
The risk of death in the first year of widowhood is a lot larger for men than it is for women. Women are, in part, just more resilient, experts say.
People in their 60s are much more susceptible to the widowhood effect than those in their 70s and older. Itâs possible that this could be tied to the fact that deaths before age 70 are less likely to involve the type of drawn-out caregiving process that can allow spouses to begin processing their grief even before theyâve lost their partner.

The best way to elevate a red carpet look? With a hairstyle that literally increases your aesthetic altitude. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor and presenter Danai Gurira stole the spotlight at this eveningâs Oscars 2023 with a towering updo that served as a visually impactful homage.
