Also known as the Yonghe Temple, the Lama Temple is one of Beijing's most attractive and best-preserved temples. Completed in 1745, the building served a political purpose by giving Lamaism, the religion of the then just annexed Tibet, an official seat in the capital. It was built to generous proportions and equipped with many valuable works of art.

Its most important feature is the Hall of the Kings of Heaven (Tian Wang Dian) with its statue of Buddha surrounded by the four kings who are provided with symbolic objects (a toad, sword, snake, and shield). Also noteworthy is the statue of Weituo, the protector of Buddhism, holding an iron staff.

Other important buildings include the Pavilion of the Four-tongued Stele (Yubi Ting), which houses a stele dating back to 1792 that contains the history of the Lama religion written in Chinese, Manchurian, Tibetan, and Mongolian; and the Hall of the Buddhist Wheel (Falun Dian), the teaching and assembly hall of the monastery, its interior dominated by a six-meter-tall statue, two thrones, and numerous sacred manuscripts.

Be sure to also see the largest building at the Lama Temple, the Pavilion of Four Thousand Fortunes (Wangfu Ge), with its enormous 18-meter-high sandalwood statue.

China will reinstate its 15-day visa-free entry for citizens of Singapore and Brunei from July 26, according to the embassies of both countries.

This comes after a three-year suspension of visas as China adopted strict travel restrictions under its stringent zero-Covid policy, which ended in December last year.

Singapore citizens will be able to enter China without a visa for 15 days if they are there for business, tourism, family visits and transit, the Chinese embassy to Singapore said. It added that visas which have been issued to Singaporean citizens will still be valid and those that have been requested will be processed.

More than a million people have been forced from their homes by the remnants of a storm in China’s northeastern Hebei province, according to state media, as officials warned it could take a month for the waters to recede in some areas.

Typhoon Doksuri slammed into southeastern China’s Fujian province on July 28 before weakening and making its way north.

The rains that followed soaked Hebei, a province of 75 million, and the neighboring cities of Beijing and Tianjin. Flooding in those regions stranded residents, washed away bridges and highways, killing about 30 people in total, according to Chinese authorities.

The China Watermelon Museum, which was established in 2002, has 4,000 square metres of exhibits that follow the history of the watermelon from its beginnings in southern Africa through its alleged ascent into space.

The futuristically contemporary museum is crammed with wax watermelons that showcase the numerous types from across the world, all of which are illuminated by plenty of neon.

The exhibits cover practically every facet of watermelons, including their history, cultivation techniques, and China's "watermelon culture."

Ancient Chinese poems that mention melons are on display, along with several educational signs and inscriptions.

Over the main doors, the building itself is decorated with a massive impressionistic watermelon.

Emirates is to increase flying to China ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday and has announced plans to further scale up Airbus A380 operations.

The expansion of its Chinese network comes a week after Beijing dropped quarantine requirements for inbound passengers and ended restrictions on international flights under the “five-one” policy.

In response, Emirates said it plans to resume passenger routes from Dubai (DXB) to both Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Beijing Capital (PEK), as well as increase service to Guangzhou (CAN).

Shanghai returns to the Gulf carrier’s network from Jan. 20, starting with two flights per week using A380s. The outbound leg will be nonstop, while the return will operate via Bangkok (BKK).

Service will double to 4X-weekly from Feb. 2 operated by a three-class Boeing 777-300ER, before increasing to daily from March 1.

Emirates is also restarting daily passenger service to Beijing Capital (PEK) from March 15 onboard 777-300ERs, while Guangzhou will see frequencies rise from four flights per week to daily from Feb. 1 using A380s. The airline currently operates the return leg from Guangzhou via Bangkok but will reinstate nonstop flights in both directions once frequencies become daily.

During both the Ming (1403-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, it was the location of the imperial court and the most important building in the city. It now serves as one of Beijing’s most popular and visited palaces.

MOO SHU PORK
Traditionally, Moo Shu Pork belongs to Northern Chinese cuisine. By some accounts, the recipe first appeared in Shandong Province, where it then grew in popularity and evolved as it spread to Beijing, the rest of China, and to Western countries.

It was originally called Moo Shi Pork (or “muhk sāi” in Cantonese), named after the famous Sweet Osmanthus tree, which produces beautiful blossoms of "gwai fā" (桂花), a Chinese symbol of nobility, status, love, and peace.

China even named a city in the tree’s honor, Guilin, which literally means ”Forest of Sweet Osmanthus”, and which also happens to be where my parents went for their honeymoon in the 80s.

Beijing, Guangzhou airports see large-scale flight cancellations amid surge in COVID-19 cases nationwide

Airports across the country saw widespread flight cancellations on Wednesday, with some airports even reaching a flight cancellation rate of 98 percent, according to flight information provider Flight Master. The local health authorities also announced that eight districts in Guangzhou will temporarily suspend offline classes. The measures are seen as a response to the mounting pressure of COVID-19 cases nationwide.

As of 10:00 am on Wednesday, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport in South China’s Guangdong Province had cancelled 1,163 flights, with a cancellation rate of 89 percent. Two major airports in Beijing also had widespread flight cancellations, with 718 and 767 flights cancelled at Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport respectively, amounting to cancellation rates of 75 percent and 86 percent.

The number of infections has risen sharply across the country, with 1,294 new local confirmed cases and 6,882 asymptomatic infections reported on Tuesday, according to the National Health Commission. The epidemic prevention and control measures across the country are facing severe challenges.

In 1179, Emperor Zhangzong of the Jin dynasty had a country resort built northeast of Zhongdu, the Jin capital, located in the southwestern part of modern Beijing. Taiye Lake was excavated along the Jinshui River and Daning Palace (大寧宮) was erected on Qionghua Island in the lake.

During the reign of Kublai Khan in the Yuan dynasty, the Qionghua island was redesigned by various architects and officials such as Liu Bingzhong, Guo Shoujing and Amir al-Din. Taiye Lake was enclosed in the Imperial City of Yuan's new capital Dadu

After the Ming dynasty moved its capital to Beijing, construction on the existing Imperial City began in 1406. At this time, the Taiye Lake were divided into three lakes by bridges, Northern Sea (Beihai, 北海), Central Sea (Zhonghai, 中海) and Southern Sea (Nanhai, 南海). The lakes were part of an extensive royal park called Xiyuan (Western Park, 西苑) in the west part of the Imperial City, Beijing.

In 1747, the Qianlong Emperor ordered that three "rare" calligraphy works housed within the Hall of Mental Cultivation made by Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Wang Xun, as well as 134 other calligraphic works from the Imperial Collection were to be carved into stone, and displayed in the Pavilion of Reviewing the Past which was located in Beihai Park.

The museum was established in 2003 by the merging of the two separate museums that had occupied the same building since 1959: the Museum of the Chinese Revolution in the northern wing (originating in the Office of the National Museum of the Revolution founded in 1950 to preserve the legacy of the 1949 revolution) and the National Museum of Chinese History in the southern wing (with origins in both the Beijing National History Museum, founded in 1949, and the Preliminary Office of the National History Museum, founded in 1912, tasked to safeguard China's larger historical legacy).

The building was completed in 1959 as one of the Ten Great Buildings celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It complements the opposing Great Hall of the People that was built at the same time. The structure sits on 6.5 hectares (16 acres) and has a frontal length of 313 metres (1,027 ft), a height of four stories totaling 40 metres (130 ft), and a width of 149 metres (489 ft). The front displays ten square pillars at its center.
