Representation of Faroe Islands in Beijing
The Representation of the Faroes in Beijing represents the Faroese government in China, Japan, R.O. Korea and East Asia as a whole.
We are here to promote, enhance government to government, business to business and people to people relations.
April 25th, the Representation of the Faroe Islands in Beijing held the Faroese Flag Day reception in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark.
On 25 April 1940, the British occupation government approved the flag for use by Faroese vessels. Britain did not want the same flag as German-occupied Denmark to be used. April 25 is still celebrated as Flaggdagur, which is a national holiday. With the Home Rule Act of 1948, the flag, Merkið, was recognized by the Danish Government as the national flag of the Faroes.
Photos from the Faroes were shown on the reception, where the guests among other delicacies could enjoy salmon from the Faroe Islands. Heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful guests, who honoured the Faroe Islands on our Flag Day.

25 April – The Faroese Flag Day
Today is celebrated as ‘Flaggdagur’ (flag day) and is a national holiday on the Faroe islands. The flag of the Faroe Islands is an offset red and blue cross on a white backgrounds, following the general design of other Nordic flags. In the late 19th and early 20th century the Faroese society went through a rapid development of modernisation with a simultaneous growth in the economy and population. In this optimistic and progressive atmosphere there was a growing awareness of the distinct Faroese culture, language and national identity. A group of young Faroese studying in the Danish capital Copenhagen, including Mr Jens Oliver Lisberg, met in early 1919 in one of the students’ flat, where they decided that their beloved country should have its own flag, and so they designed the Faroese national flag ‘Merkið’ (“the banner”). The first time the flag was raised in the Faroe Islands was on June 22 that same year in Famjin, the home village of Mr Lisberg, on the occasion of a wedding. During World War 2 the Faroes were occupied by the British, whose government in London on 25 April 1940 approved the flag for use by Faroese vessels. Since that day the Faroese flag has become the national symbol of the Faroese people. With the Home Rule Act of 1948, the flag was officially recognized by the Danish government as the flag of the Faroe Islands.
