Manage your emotions. Stress, anxiety, and depression can make you want to smoke. Find healthy ways to deal with your feelings, such as exercise, meditation, or talking to someone. Smoking won’t solve your problems, but only harm your health.

People with COPD may need more nutrients than people without COPD. Here are some tips to help you get more nutrients:
1. Choose complex carbohydrates like whole-grain bread and pasta, fresh fruits, and vegetables.
2. Limit simple carbohydrates like table sugar, candy, cake, and regular soft drinks.
3. Eat a good source of protein at least twice a day to help maintain strong respiratory muscles. Good choices include milk, eggs, cheese, meat, fish, poultry, nuts, and dried beans or peas.
4. Choose mono- and poly-unsaturated fats which do not contain cholesterol. These are fats that are often liquid at room temperature and come from plant sources such as canola, safflower, and corn oils.
5. Limit foods that contain trans fats and saturated fat such as butter, lard, fat and skin from meat, hydrogenated vegetable oils, shortening, fried foods, cookies, crackers, and pastries.
