Presenting Electric Evolution ⚡️

At the recent CIMA Motor trade show, visitors had first sight of T&D drive systems installed in a range of electric motorcycles. Two off-road motorbikes, and an electric moped based on a popular conversion-to-electric model, were on display at the T&D stand, alongside displays of the individual powertrain components: motors and drive units, controllers, batteries, HMI units and charging systems.

In a game-changing move for the electric two-wheeler industry, T&D has joined forces with EV charging and operating stack brand Bolt.Earth, to provide a comprehensive solution for EV two-wheeler OEMs.

Sunny He, Managing Director of T&D, emphasized, "This isn't just about two companies working closely. T&D are innovative pioneers. It's true! It's because we produce the entire drive system, not just the components. Logical to us, but a rarity in e-motorcycle development. However, T&D's innovative thinking would be nothing if the components failed to deliver.

Motor: T&D's range of Permanent Magnet Synchronised Motors (PMSMs) are lightweight to aid with manoeuvrability and distance. Power-to-weight ratios also affect balance and performance, so it'll come as no surprise that one in the T&D range can propel a motorcycle to 50 km/h in under 3 seconds. Useful for climbing angles too, of course.

Battery: Often referred to as the key component for EVs (and a regular hot topic!), T&D's batteries are manufactured with aluminium housing to keep them light. This benefits range and performance. Our battery technology also brings reliability. All of T&D's batteries come with 6 major safeguarding functions, for example, overvoltage and overcharge protection. We think long-term too. Our high-power load capacity batteries have a standby period of up to 6 months.

Charger: An EV battery charger needs to be fast. T&D realised that producing a range of chargers to suit different battery types would be beneficial; a "one-size-fits-all" approach wasn't the solution. We also realised that a domestic power supply would be used by many, so all of our chargers can be used at home or during our working day.

Controller: The brains of the drive system! Instant communication between all of the components is needed in an electric drive system. T&D's DSP controller provides this. With our research into the EV sector, we have developed our controllers based upon industry standard AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture (AUTOSAR). This gives torque estimation, bus current estimation, temperature estimation functions, precise control, and, therefore, outstanding reliability.

HMI: It’s important for riders to feel a close and intuitive connection with their motorcycle, so T&D has developed a range of HMIs that will provide data to the rider in Chinese, English, German, or Spanish. Be it remaining mileage, speeds, or component alerts, our HMIs relay clear, concise information and provide the platform for a locked entry security system.

Electric Evolution. That’s T&D’s proverb, but what exactly does it mean? T&D has entered the e-motorcycle sector with something new: complete drive systems.

This is evolutionary to many; to us, it’s intuition. Why would you not R&D an entire system?

Having the major components working in tandem offers the best possible, most reliable solution to developers in the motorcycle sector, with components designed to work together, from the start. Then there’s the price: having all the major parts coming from one manufacturer is cost-effective, with fewer logistical headaches.

Exploring and understanding the electric motorcycle sector before entering is also forward-thinking. One set of components will not suit all types; T&D has developed products tailored to specific motorcycle categories - no one-size-fits-all approach here.

In our latest blog, we focus on the achievements that we have made with the design and development of our electric off-road powertrain. Our innovative FE01 Storm system delivers the solution for all off-road riders while being road-friendly for those who simply love these motorcycle types.

We recognised that the electric drive system would be perfect for off-road motorcycles. Due to a small motor and fewer components, our FE01 powertrain is light. This is vital for a motorcycle that is required to make tight turns over unfavourable terrains. The astonishing 125N.m of torque delivered by our 6kW motor delivers controllable, instant power. This is a priority for the off-road sector.

Some might think that not all motorcycle types are able to be powered by an electric drive system, in particular, sports motorcycles. With many on our roads almost mirroring a MotoGP bike, surely an ICE is needed. Not so.

There are three main elements that are establishing the electric sports motorcycle: acceleration, weight, and gear changing. Anyone who has already ridden an electric motorcycle will confirm that instant torque makes for quite simply, phenomenal acceleration. There’s no slipping the clutch or prepping for the power band. It’s just a linear delivery of power. Thanks to a smaller engine and fewer components, an electric sports bike is also lighter. It will have the weight and balance of a 250cc motorcycle with the power delivery of a 600cc. And then there’s the gear change, or lack of it. The single power band means there’s no changing gear. This has numerous other benefits, for example not having to select an optimum gear to accelerate out of a bend.

Although much of the data surrounding our LE01 Lightning powertrain is yet to be disclosed, we can tell you that with 1125N.m of rear wheel torque and 70kw of power, this drive system will push you to 100km/h from a standing start in a blistering 3 seconds.
