China's equipment renewals to boost new demand for higher-end steel products
BEIJING -- The country's action plan to promote large-scale equipment renewals is estimated to generate about 8 million tonnes in new market demand for medium and high-end steel products by the manufacturing industry, according to an industrial association.

The China Iron and Steel Association said that the action plan to boost equipment renewals and trade-ins of consumer goods, which was unveiled in March by the State Council, the cabinet, will lead to new demand for steel products by particularly the manufacturing and energy industries.

China's industrial firms see smaller gains in profits in Q1
Profits at China's industrial firms posted smaller gains for the first quarter compared with the first two months of the year, official data showed on Saturday.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that industrial enterprises with annual revenue of at least 20 million yuan ($2.8 million) saw their total profits increase 4.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter after a 10.2 percent rise in the first two months. Profits fell 3.5 percent year-on-year in March.

TAIYUAN -- China's major coal-producing region of Shanxi has stepped up renewable energy growth over the last year amid efforts to seek low-carbon and greener development.

Its installed renewable energy capacity reached 53.09 GW at the end of 2023, up 22.6 percent year-on-year, according to the Shanxi provincial statistics bureau.

The figure accounts for 39.9 percent of the total installed power generation capacity in the province, up by 4.1 percentage points from a year ago, the agency said.

BEIJING - China's natural gas consumption registered a steady increase in 2023 amid the country's efforts to promote green development, official data showed.

Last year, apparent consumption of natural gas stood at 394.53 billion cubic meters, up 7.6 percent year-on-year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

In December 2023, apparent consumption of natural gas rose 9.5 percent compared with the same period of 2022, reaching 37.65 billion cubic meters.

As electric vehicles boom and bring about charging challenges worldwide, China is producing self-driving charging robots to juice up EVs as part of broader efforts for a more advanced EV ecosystem.

NaaS Technology, one of China's largest and fastest-growing EV charging service providers, recently launched such a robot that finds EVs, smart-charges them and collects payments automatically.

Leveraging V2X (vehicle-to-everything) technology, the robot parks itself precisely, automatically docks into an EV's charging port and, using a mechanical arm, charges it up, without human assistance. When the robot's battery runs out, it can recharge itself as well.

According to Alex Wu, NaaS Technology's president and chief financial officer, the robot eliminates the trouble of plugging heavy charging cables into EVs and waiting in a queue for a charging pile.

"China has the world's most developed EV charging market, a mature EV charging ecosystem, advanced EV charging solutions, and cost-effective charging and energy storage products," said Wu.
