The Monument of La India Catalina (1495-Unknown death date) is a pivotal figure for the beginning of mestizaje in the territories of Cartagena de Indias. She facilitated the Spanish settlement led by Pedro de Heredia from January 14, 1533. 🌟
Fluent in both Spanish and indigenous dialects, she was also the niece of the main chieftains of the Galerazamba (Zamba) region, as discovered in a 1535 Probanza. Zamba is a town near Cartagena de Indias. ❤️💛💚
La India Catalina belonged to the Mokaná ethnic group, which inhabited the current Colombian departments of Atlántico and Bolívar. Around 1527, after returning to the mainland of Gaira from Santo Domingo, where she was taken as a child by Diego Nicuesa, she worked on evangelizing in the Governorate of Santa Marta and later in the Governorate of Bolívar. 🤩💫
She is known as the “India Lengua”, a “peacemaker” and translator among indigenous tribes. Catalina is presented as a symbol of the native race (portrayed as a gentle and peaceful woman serving colonization), being the only indigenous figure honored today.
Ultimately, her work helped reduce deaths and battles between the Spanish and the Indians of that territory. As stated by Álvaro de Torres, who handed her over in Santa Marta to Pedro de Heredia, “... with this interpreter I gave him, Pedro de Heredia has populated this land, because she is, as she is, the niece of the main chieftains of that province, and she pacified them and made peace with all, which could not have been done without her, as the Christians and the land were very belligerent.”🌟🇨🇴
