Epic time

4 day tour with Exile Medics 27/02/2017

On the 13th of February 20 medics of Exile Medics headed to Don Diego, a small coastal village on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, for 4 days of bushcraft and survival training. They learned about the jungle, about navigation, how to make fire and make water potable using different kind of stills. They learned how to make natural shelters and rafts using bamboo. As an unforgettable extra they got the unique opportunity meeting one of the Kogui indian-chiefs, and could even ask him questions. As sign of gratitude the Kogui-chief returned next morning to hand everyone a ´seguranza´, a wristband that means safe passage in the Kogui-tradition. All together 4 incredible days, which DC Bushcraft & Survival will never forget!

Spend any time with the DC Bushcraft & Survival crew, and you will be sure to see toucans and other amazing bird species, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world! Here is a little information on the amazing biodiversity witnessed in this region.

Here on the northern Colombian coast, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range, which we are located within, is the world’s tallest coastal mountain range, reaching an elevation of 18,492 feet (5,775 meters). It harbors numerous self-contained tropical and alpine ecosystems in a relatively small area which has allowed for many plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth.

An amazing 628 bird species have been recorded in Sierra Nevada — about the number that can be found in the United States and Canada combined. Some species, such as the Santa Marta Antpitta, Rusty-headed Spinetail, Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant, and White-lored Warbler, cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Other spectacular birds found in the Sierra Nevada are the Andean condor, Blue-knobbed Curassow, Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird, and black-solitary eagle, which are endangered species. At least 71 species of migratory birds that travel between Colombia and North America have been recorded.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a landscape of biological juxtapositions. Palms, cacti and tropical dry forest fringe the mountain’s northern border along the Caribbean coast, while tropical rain forests, treeless plains, and snow-capped peaks are found in the interior.

We hope you have the opportunity to see this amazing biodiversity firsthand.

La Fuente, our sister company, is where many of our guests stay before and after the survival tours. To support the local community, they are now offering these handmade bags each handcrafted by the Association of Women Arhuaca. 100% of the proceeds go back to the association to support their cause and the preservation of the Arhuaco indigenous community.

DC Bushcraft & Survival was recently granted access to an indigenous piece of land; untouched jungle which we will be able to utilize for future survival tours. A few days ago, we set off to discover what this mountainside has to offer; to find the water, shelter, and potential food sources. It was an exciting hike of cliffs, ravines, dense jungle and lookout points. A big part of this partnership will be our efforts to help preserve their land and traditions. We look forward to guiding our guests through this land in the future!

Here at DC Bushcraft, we hope to help preserve the lands of the Sierra Nevada de Marta mountain range where many indigenous communities still remain.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a unique pyramid-shaped mountain on the northern tip of Colombia. On its slopes live four separate but related peoples: the Arhuaco (or Ika), Wiwa, Kogi, and Kankuamo. Together they number more than 30,000. The mountain’s peak is over 5,000m high. Rising from the shores of the Caribbean to glacier peaks, the mountains encompass 7 ecosystems.

An Arhuaco community lives very close to us in the mountains outside of Minca. They are a profoundly spiritual people. They believe in a creator or "father" named Kakü Serankua, who engendered the first gods and material living things, other "fathers" like the sun and the snowy peaks and other "mothers" like the earth and the moon. They consider the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to be the heart of the world, and believe that the well-being of the rest of the world depends on it.

We look forward to working closely with this community and spreading awareness about the importance of conserving the Sierra Nevada and the cultures within.
