A small band of explorers set off around Veliko Ratno Ostrvo this morning and - in spite of the early rain - enjoyed a wonderful walk and a sumptuous brunch.

Our Story

St Mary’s Belgrade is part of the Diocese in Europe, a vast group of churches stretching from westernmost Europe to easternmost Russia.

It was established by the Church of England to care for English-speaking people on the continent, an effort begun in 1633.

St Mary’s is one of about two dozen Christian communities within the diocese’s Eastern Archdeaconry.

What is St Mary’s?
We are the only Anglican presence in Serbia. Our spiritual life centres around the weekly celebration of the Holy Eucharist. As a community we endeavour to love God and our neighbours every day – not just Sunday.

Who goes?
People like you. Our congregation is made up of Serbians and expatriates from around the world. Some are born-and-bred Anglicans, but many come to St Mary’s from other Christian denominations. Students, aid workers, diplomats, children, journalists, mothers, footballers, executives, pensioners and teachers all find their spiritual home with us. Our members speak English as a first, second or even third language.

Where does St Mary’s meet?
For many years St Mary’s has met to worship in buildings belonging to the Roman Catholic Church in Belgrade: initially in the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and then in a Chapel in Visegradska, and from Sunday 21st July 2019 in the Winter Chapel at the Church of St Peter (Crkva sv. Petra), at the Jesuit monastery in Belgrade, Makedonska 23.

What is St Mary’s’ denominational affiliation?
We are part of the Anglican Communion which has 70 million members worldwide. The Anglican Communion is made up of 38 provinces overseen by the Archbishop of Canterbury, two of which comprise our church, the Church of England. The Church of England in turn consists of 44 dioceses, ours being the Diocese in Europe, served by the Bishop of Gibraltar. This huge diocese hosts seven archdeaconries, including ours, the Eastern Archdeaconry which stretches from Vienna in the west of Vladivostok in the east, and has about two dozen congregations, of which one is St Mary’s Belgrade!
