On World Cleanup Day, our team from Monumentenfonds Curaçao dedicated a morning to volunteer cleanup in the Colon area.

We joined forces to pick up various litter and give the area a fresh new look.

This morning, we had an informative session at Hofi Rooi Catootje 🌳, where we, along with Carmabi, Mongui Maduro Foundation, NAAM and the University of Curaçao, focused on the water management infrastructure in the Rooi Catootje area 💧.

As part of the Awa pa Kòrsou project, we are exploring Curaçao's historical water systems to better understand climate resilience and sustainable water management 🌿.

By combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, we are working to learn and implement sustainable solutions for the future of our island 🌍.

[BESCHERMD MONUMENT] 🌟 Het behoud van monumenten is sinds de jaren '90 een belangrijk beleid op Curaçao. Momenteel zijn er 870 gebouwen beschermd, waarvan 800 in de historische binnenstad van Willemstad. Buiten Willemstad hebben ongeveer 60 landhuizen en diverse kerken, woonhuizen en grotere complexen deze status.

📜 Om als beschermd monument te worden aangewezen, moet een pand minstens 50 jaar oud zijn en van algemeen belang. We kijken naar de schoonheid, kunstwaarde, wetenschappelijke en historische betekenis, en volkskundige waarde.

🏛 Bij de selectie houden we ook rekening met de monumentale ensemblewaarde, architectuurhistorische- en esthetische waarde, en cultuurhistorische waarde.

Gebouwd in 1873, heeft dit gebouw door de jaren heen gediend als school, kerk, en verenigingsgebouw, en nu, na een zorgvuldige renovatie, straalt het opnieuw als een prachtige plek om van te genieten. Bekijk de indrukwekkende transformatie in de voor- en na-foto's!

Belvédèrestraat 43 - 45 “Huize Beaujon”, Otrobanda

Originally the land on which this house was built, belonged to the Kurá di shon Toms (Frederikstraat 136 - 144). Thomas Pieterz (shon Toms), sold this plot in 1855 to his wife’s four second cousins, the Hoyer sisters, for 500 guiders. In view of the date on the northern gable, they had this house built immediately after.
In 1899 the house went to a daughter of another Hoyer sister, Henriette Maria Wilhelmina Brusse. She owned the house until KNSM employee Jan Hendrik Rudolf Beaujon bought it in 1938. He did not occupy it immediately.
The Beaujon family owned several houses in Otrobanda that they rented out, and lived in Belvedèrestraat 11 at the time.

Around 1960 the Beaujon family moved the the Van Engelen neighborhood and the Curiel family rented the house and left in 1973. The house remained unoccupied for quite some time until the Monument Foundation Curaçao bought it in 1990.
It was restored and housed the Monument Foundation Curaçao’s offices, initially those of Stadsherstel as well.

Presently, it is in use by HBN Law.

De beschrijvingen zijn opgenomen in het “Openbaar Register voor Beschermde Monumenten”, te raadplegen bij de afdeling ROP/Planning & Erfgoed van het Ministerie van Verkeer, Vervoer en Ruimtelijke Planning, Plasa Horacio Hoyer 19. Hier kan men tegen betaling van NAf. 7,50 een uittreksel verkrijgen uit het Register.

Heerenstraat 01, Punda

Curaçao’s most iconic building goes back to 1708, when the building of this three-storied house started. The house must have been commissioned by Emmerentiana Huyts, as she bought the plot if land at that time. Huyts was the widow of Willem Kerckrinck, Director of Curaçao from 1686 until 1692.

The original building was narrower and less ornate.

The arcades seen today on the facade of Breedestraat weren’t added until the second half of the 18th century, something that was very popular at the time. This made the building considerably larger and also made the Breedestraat narrower.

Just like the arcades the stuco ornaments date from later times. It was probably Antoine Mathey, owner from 1820 - 1848, who had these floral motifs, birds and trees put on.
