𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒𝐊𝐈𝐍 is a Beirut-based duo of visionary electronic dream pop, shapeshifting above ambient and industrial undercurrents. Their music is moody, unsettling, luminous – the culmination of a decade of collaboration and friendship between producer/musician/engineer Fadi Tabbal, and singer-songwriter/musician Julia Sabra from indie trio Postcards.

Snakeskin’s debut self-titled album was released on October 14, 2022, as part of the Corrosion Series –– a collaborative effort by Portland-based label Beacon Sound and Beirut-based label Ruptured. Sabra and Tabbal began working on the record in the aftermath of the August 2020 port explosion, composing their first track 'Roots' for the Ruptured-curated series The Drone Sessions in the fall of 2020. The duo is currently finishing their sophomore album.

𝐏𝐚𝐧 & 𝐀𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐬

Two electric guitars construct a Wall of Sound made by fluctuating frequencies. This isn't your typical performance; it's an exploration, a conversation between two musicians. With each stroke, Panagiotis Mina and Alkis Nicolaides dive deeper into uncharted sonic territory, experimenting with tunings and textures to create an ever-shifting soundscape. The music fluctuates, oscillating between moments of tranquility and intensity, drawing listeners into a trance-like state.

Panagiotis Mina (b. 1982, BA Communication Culture and Media) is interested in the concept of noise and interruption within cultural norms. Using photography, video, sound and music he explores the ability of different platforms to accept the inevitability of their demise
and either create an alternative world using a similar discourse or mock the existing ones. He has been working as a freelance photographer and video maker and as an audio/visual artist in Cyprus since 2003.

Alkis Nicolaides is a guitarist, improviser, composer, and educator from Cyprus. His original work takes many forms, influenced by a wide array of musical traditions. Performances range from original explosive jazz-influenced metal music –"battle jazz" – to ASMR cooking performance art, contemporary western art chamber music, music for home appliances, and improvised duets with his pseudo-AI computer instrument named Challenger. Nicolaides's interest in exploring many styles and performance methods is rooted in Edgar Varèse’s definition of music: “What is music but organized noise?” and David Rosenboom’s words: “What is music? I hope we never see a day when we believe we know the answer. For that day would close down music as a viable art form.”

Her research and practice are focused on relationships between space and sound and the role of context in creating sonic narratives. She is a co-founder of the Beirut Synthesizer Center, an informal co-op and research lab on sound synthesis operating from Beirut.

PSEEHEEKAWN is a solo project by guitarist and composer Giorgos Bizios dedicated to the creative process of discovery and transformation and to the decolonization of musical expression. With a somewhat childlike attitude, he approaches the guitar in unconventional ways and incorporates musical or found objects that extend the instrument's expressive functionality and challenge its predetermined identity. G. Bizios' solo guitar music proposes rather a language, constructed in the liminal space between antithetic elements, in his attempt to honor both the noise and the stillness, the fluid and the concrete, the body and the spirit.

Giorgos Bizios is a guitarist, composer, improviser, interdisciplinary artist and performance maker from Limassol. After graduating from the ArtEZ Conservatory in the Netherlands in 2019, he is based in Cyprus and works as a creator and collaborator in the field of performing arts with focus on experimental and contemporary music, performance art and choreography. Some of his latest works are the solo work "slowness is an act of resistance" which was presented at Sessions as part of the interdisciplinary event 22 ̊Halo (co-curated by Ichomagnetics and Nicola Mitropoulou) and the site-specific peripatetic musical performance "the smallest unit that is still listening" which was developed and presented as part of Xarkis residency program.

Build-a-Band is an initiative that began 2 years ago aiming to experiment under the assumption that anyone can be a musician. Anyone who wants to can communicate through music through courage, consistency and listening. Our desire to allow music to flow through us led us to explore what was possible, refusing to believe the limitations that music is only a language for those who have studied and learnt an instrument. We have built a multilayered language that oscillates between chaos and harmony, travels through different dimensions and reminds everyone in the room of the heart and the essence of expression.
-
Irine Flexiblespirit Self taught musician, flirting with all kinds of instruments having preference on wind and chords. Her rhythm and produce melodies that can fly you away.
-
Foxy is a Welsh man, and for the majority, his 30 years of life, he believed he was not a musician. He moved to Cyprus and joined build-a-band, reconnecting with his musical child of old.
-
Margo Khlop is an artist from Siberia. Her path in adulthood took her into the management part of the creative field. She is currently presenting herself as a multidisciplinary artist, perfecting improvisational music & dance.
-
Aggelos Messios is a multidisciplinary artist specialising in sculpture and performance art. He has been exploring the relationship between performance and the world (action performance) and most recently he has been shifting from the standard performance structure towards permaculture, an understanding of nature and spirituality.
-
Melissa Zanga .zanga is a poet and performance artist from Cyprus. She won the National Poetry Slam Championship in 2022, representing Cyprus in the World Championships. She founded BLEND, a creativity school of improvisation & performance for adults. She now explores her own work using improvisation in music, poetry and performance to bring forward vulnerability, presence, awareness, community and the joy of being.

Today - April 20th - A great opportunity with this amazing workshop! With the one and only: Emiddio Vasquez!
Don’t forget to bring your laptops and get into the world of an endless possibilities!

Day 2 – Thursday, April 20th, 2023sms, Sound & Computation” by Emiddio Vasquez
Part I: 10:00-12:00 - Context and MaxMSP Crash course
Part II: 13:30-16:00 - Modalys in MaxMSP
Day 2 – Thursday April 20th, 2023
Theatro Polis
The workshop will take a close look at physical modeling as a technique to synthesize sound, by using a hybrid of MaxMSP and modal synthesis. To do so we will consider notions of computation, digital sound composition and synthesis, as material processes by engaging critically with the ideological assumptions and constructions on both domains and the implemented techniques.

Following the ongoing discussions of (neo-)materialist thinking and drawing inspiration from the story of the “Pythagorean hammers” that was crucial to both Western philosophy and tonality, the workshop will introduce users to core issues at stake when considering digital instrument building, ultimately inviting them to form “a new forge” and leave the workshop with their own individual materially-dependent digital instruments.
