What you need to know about volcanic ash in cosmetics and how it affects your skin 🌋

Sometimes it seems that people have gone too far in their quest to be forever young. Cosmetologists adapt any ingredient to their needs, whether it's swallow's nest extract, snail slime or fire debris.

For example, volcanic ash is found in skin care products. It's found in masks, cleansing foams, and moisturizing creams. Experts believe that in many ways this component is similar to the healing mud or more delicate clay. Let's find out what is remarkable about products with volcanic ash.

WHAT IS THE VOLCANIC ASH

It is a mixture of particles of bentonite clay and minerals, ejected from the mouth of a volcano during an eruption. In many cases, it is harmful: flights are often cancelled, crops die and air quality suffers. But cosmetologists have noticed that the ingredient improves skin conditions.

Bentonite particles are porous and small, so they absorb oils. This property is useful for people with oily skin, as well as for those who live in metropolitan areas. Dust and dirt are deposited daily on a person's face, which clogs the pores - this leads to the appearance of black dots and acne. The problem gets worse if the city dweller regularly uses heavy, oil-based cosmetics.

Ash, says dermatologist and founder of 5th Avenue Aesthetics Center Marie Hayag, is designed to rid users of this problem. But it's not just known for its adsorbing properties.

WHAT ELSE IS VOLCANIC ASH GOOD FOR?

Actress Alyssa Milano's dermatologist Anna Guanche explains that this ingredient is known as an antioxidant and antibacterial exfoliant. It is often used to correct post-acne, treat psoriasis and eczema, and prevent dandruff.

Volcanic ash soothes and whitens irritated skin, absorbs excess grease, and exfoliates dead cells. Because of these properties, cosmetic manufacturers use it in the creation of both facial products and formulations for hair.

At the same time, there is a funny feature that affects the pricing policy. Initially bentonite - the basis of cosmetics with volcanic ash - is cheaper than the other adsorbing element - activated carbon. At the same time, their properties are about the same.

However, such means are still considered something unusual among Russian-speaking users, despite the fact that such compositions exist on the market for several years. So, if abroad cosmetics based on volcanic ash are considered inexpensive and even associated with cats (bentonite is the basis of litter fillers), then in local stores products with it cost more than compositions with the usual charcoal.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF VOLCANIC ASH

First and foremost - a high risk of dry skin. Volcanic ash, like any other clay, it is important to combine with moisturizing components such as hyaluronic acid. Your scalp, face or body should be nourished with serums and creams immediately after using bentonite-based cosmetics. Otherwise, problems like dandruff or high sebum production can worsen.

There is one more disadvantage, which is mostly spoken about abroad: ash consumed internally can lead to poisoning. Volcanic particles are hardly freely available in Russia, but they can easily be found at U.S. retailers, which consumers often take advantage of. Some people, say experts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, use bentonite clay in their food in the belief that it will help flush out toxins.

However, volcanic ash is much more aggressive than activated charcoal, and, in addition, some samples of the element contains lead: this substance leads to serious diseases.

HOW TO USE VOLCANIC ASH COSMETICS

Dr. Hayag recommends using products that do not need to be left on the skin for a long time, such as shampoos and masks. Combine it with a bath: the hot water will make your pores steamier, and the ingredients will work more quickly.

If you have dry skin, use preparations with volcanic ash no more than once every one and a half to two weeks to keep the skin from flaking. If you have normal, combination or oily skin, apply the formulas once or twice a week.

Please note that cosmetics containing volcanic ash can dry out your skin, so do not use too many cosmetics containing volcanic ash, but use only one. If you wash your face with a composition with ash, give preference to moisturizing masks, and vice versa - choosing volcanic masks, stop for cleansers with nourishing components.

What is powder cosmetics and is it worth trying?

Cosmetics in the form of powder in a jar have existed for centuries, but technology has stepped forward - and the usual creams, gels and serums have appeared. Today, there is a reverse trend: manufacturers are increasingly producing cosmetics in a dry "do-it-yourself" format. Such cosmetics are not immediately applied in a dry form to the skin, like powder or blush. The coveted powder still need to activate the water or special liquid, which comes in a package. Let's tell you what the benefits of powder cosmetics and what it is.

What is the powder cosmetics

Powder cosmetics are grooming products in the form of powder, which should be mixed with water or other liquids to get a finished product. That is why dry decorative cosmetics such as blush, powder, eye shadow are not powder cosmetics. Manufacturers continue to experiment with formulas, and products in an unexpected format appear on the market. Here are the kinds of cosmetics that are already produced in the form of powders:

Masks

Dry masks can be both plant-based and mineral - from white clay. Such a mask can be sold, for example, as a powder in a transparent jar. How to use it, the manufacturer necessarily tells on the package. Often it is enough to add cold water to the mark and stir. The mask is applied to the face for 5-10 minutes, and then washed off with water. The prepared composition does not store, so it can be used only once.

Therapeutic compositions

Pharmacy "Zinerit" is a classic example of therapeutic powder cosmetics. Acne remedy is sold as a powder and a special liquid for preparing a solution. After mixing, the medicine should be used externally for 40 days before the expiration date.

Cleansers

Powder cleansers come in many different forms, but the principle of action is the same in all. For example, there is a cleansing powder for removing makeup and washing up. When it is mixed with water, it forms a creamy foam, the saturation of which can be adjusted independently. The less water, the fluffier the lather. Powder shampoo is used on a similar principle: the powder is poured into the palm of the hand and applied to wet hair, then foamed and rinsed with water - as an ordinary shampoo. You can use as a mask: leave it on your hair for a few minutes, and then rinse.

Serums

The main advantage of powder serums is the ability to use them with your favorite grooming product. For example, the Vitabrid C12 Skin powder serum for face and body is vitamin C in the form of a powder. The manufacturer advises adding a small amount to a regular serum or moisturizer just before applying it to the skin.

Advantages of powdered cosmetics

So why, in the 21st century, are cosmetics manufacturers returning to the powder format? Who can it be convenient and profitable for? For manufacturers, first of all, it is obvious economy: dry products are easier to store and cheaper to transport because of their light weight. It is also an opportunity to follow modern trends in environmental friendliness. The production of dry components saves water, which is a very valuable resource. For consumers who are not indifferent to environmental issues, it can be an argument in favor of choosing the product.

Manufacturers have not forgotten about those for whom they do all this - their consumers. Thanks to the dry formulas, they were able to include the most unstable ingredients. This means that the effectiveness of such products has become much higher.

For example, vitamin C in serums and creams can lose its effectiveness from light and air if not stored properly. Its powdered form, on the other hand, is stable and long-lasting.

The natural composition is the main advantage of powdered cosmetics. Depending on the purpose, powders mix plant extracts and minerals in different proportions. Manufacturers do not need to add preservatives: in dry form, all this by itself can be stored for a long time. Parabens, dyes and fragrances are not added, so that the composition remains as natural as possible. Therefore, the product will either not smell at all or will delight you with a subtle herbal fragrance.

The powder format is a plus in itself, although some people find it uncomfortable. You can achieve the consistency that is perfect for you: it will never be too thick or too liquid. Some powders can be added to basics, creams or serums to boost their effectiveness. So you get a tailor-made product which is totally suitable for you.

Here are some examples. People with sensitive skin can add vitamin C powder to care in minimal amounts. This will help avoid skin reactions. You can choose the most convenient way to apply anti-inflammatory powders: dry on the whole face, spot on rashes if mixed with water, and you can even add it to your favorite cream.

Dry makeup is convenient to take on trips: not only is it practically weightless, but it won't spread all over your suitcase. And such a product will not cause questions at the airport officials if you leave it in your hand luggage, unlike the classic gels and shampoos.

Disadvantages of powder cosmetics

Powdered cosmetics have disadvantages, too, and one of them is the cost. It would seem that since the manufacturer spends less on storage and transportation, a jar of powder should cost less than the average cream. But considering the natural composition and the modern formula, it is clear that there is no way to save money.

In addition, powdered cosmetics can fall apart, and therefore requires special care. No one is safe from this, especially if you do not close the lid tightly or drop the open jar.

Like other formats of cosmetics, powder may cause allergic reactions. Although natural ingredients are beneficial, they can provoke an unnecessary reaction on sensitive skin. Although, given the format, you can always reduce the concentration of the product to reduce such risks.

Perhaps powder cosmetics is not the most convenient option for those who are not used to spending a lot of time on care procedures, and for travelers. But someone, on the contrary, is attracted by the opportunity to create a unique product with their own hands or simply improve their favorite product.

What is a Japanese manicure 🇯🇵 and how is it better than a normal manicure?

Manicures in the modern sense are not environmentally friendly. Disposable nail files and cleaning brushes cannot be recycled, and microplastic remains after gel polish removal. In addition, most consumables and decor elements are toxic.

One of the healthier alternatives to the usual procedure is considered a Japanese manicure - it's also called an eco-manicure. It appeared in the 17th century, and since then the methodology has hardly changed. Here's why it's worth a try.

Honoring natural beauty

Japanese manicure is not aimed at decor, but at the care of the hands, as well as the treatment and restoration of the nail plate. It is performed without aggressive action: for example, the master does not cut the cuticle with scissors. The only cutting objects that the specialist uses during the procedure are a nail file and a buff to remove burrs.

During the procedure, the expert uses only objects made from natural ingredients: it is believed that in this way he pays tribute to the traditions of Japanese manicure, numbering 400 years.

Nails are not strengthened with acrylics, but with mineral paste and a polishing composition based on beeswax. After that, the hands are nourished with oil or serum. Usually animal squalene, a product extracted from shark liver, is used for this purpose. However, you can often find masters using a plant analogue of olives, wheat and rice bran.

If manicure with acrylic or shellac coating only camouflages irregularities and roughnesses of the nails, the Japanese procedure allows you to gradually smooth the plate and return it to a healthy shine. Besides, it makes the nails look natural. For this reason, the procedure is preferred by clients of all genders.

Finally, Japanese manicure allows you to grow healthy nails. To apply gel-lacquer or modeling paste, the master undercuts the plate so that the composition adheres to it better. Frequent corrections worsen its condition, leading to dryness and splitting. This does not happen with Japanese manicure.

It is better to trust a master, but you can do it yourself.

First, the specialist applies a gel based on glycerin and blue algae extract to the skin around the nails: it softens the cuticle. After that the expert removes all unnecessary things with a wooden stick. If it is necessary to trim the nails, this is done before applying the paste.

Next, the composition of peptides and pearl crumbs is applied to each nail. It is distributed with the help of a brush - a polishing roller made of calfskin, which grinds the plate and masters cracks. Usually at this stage, the nails are already shiny, as if glossy, but the procedure is not yet considered complete.

Next, the specialist rubs in smooth motions a powder of beeswax: it enhances the natural glow and seals the peptides contained in the mineral product. The master then applies reinforcing serums, nourishing oils and moisturizing milk.

On average, the procedure lasts 40-90 minutes and the effect lasts at least 2 weeks. It rarely costs more than a manicure with gel-lacquer coating and, in addition, it can be repeated at home. The devices for the Japanese method can be found freely available.

True, if you are going to care not only for your own hands, but also for the nails of acquaintances, it is worth remembering that kichin should not be left in a dryer: instead, it should be carefully removed from it with a wooden stick and processed in a UV sterilizer.

The Japanese manicure should also be rested.

It should not be performed immediately after the removal of gel polish: this procedure thins the nail plate, and the use of polishing paste can only spoil its condition. In that case, it is better to take a break until the nails recover. It is also not recommended to go back to gel nail polish immediately after the eco-manicure: the polymer base will not stick to the nail soaked in beeswax.

The average course of treatment with the Japanese method includes 8-10 procedures, and at least 2 weeks should pass between each of them. Grinding too often can spoil the condition of the nails.

In addition, even after a Japanese manicure, your nails and hands need protection. Use gloves when in contact with water - especially if you wash dishes in hot water for a long time. This prevents the protective compound from washing out of the nail plate early.

Try not to expose your hands to shocks, overheating or overcooling. Although Japanese manicure strengthens the nail plate, even it will not save from temperature changes and other external interactions.

7 tips to give volume to thin hair 🌸

It is the dream of every girl to have thick and healthy hair. However, not everyone can boast of luxurious hair. The cause of sparse hair may be genetic predisposition, and various diseases, including depression and stress. Here's how a successful haircut and styling products can help give your hair volume and a healthy look.

1) Learn how to properly care for your hair

The most important rule to give your hair the volume it wants is to learn how to take care of it. Thin hair is quite easy to traumatize. So it's a good idea to brush your hair with a fine-toothed comb before you wash it. It is also important to avoid strong water pressure and boiling water. Hot water can traumatize not only the hair but also the scalp. Shampoo distribute to the root of the head and rinse gently with massaging motions under running warm water. In contrast, apply hair conditioner to the entire length of the hair, avoiding the roots. Never wring or towel wet hair, or you will inevitably traumatize your hair. Make sure that your hair is noticeably dry before you brush it. Don't forget to use a good styling product such as heat protectant, oil for the ends of the hair and a styling spray.

2) Get the right haircut

Fine hair also looks unkempt because it's pulled down by its own weight. That's why beauty masters recommend choosing short haircuts for girls with thin hair. Visually increase the density and make the hair thicker by using multi-layered haircuts with gradation. The most successful haircuts are the elongated bob, cascade and classic or uniform carriage. In addition, the volume on the hair can be given with the right coloring. Colorists advise to use a palette of 3-6 tones of the same range to create a 3D effect on the hair.

3) Use styling products

Today's beauty market is full of styling products designed to add volume to thin hair. Try a volumizer, a hair styler that adds volume to the roots. Try using a dry shampoo to give your hair volume and hold it in place. Spread a small amount of shampoo at the roots and use your fingers to massage it all over your head. It is important not to go too much with the amount of styling agent, otherwise you can only make your hair heavier and deprive it of volume.

4) Learn how to curl your hair

Stylists strongly advise against straightening fine hair with a blow dryer. Instead of flattening your hair even more, learn how to curl it with a flat iron or curling iron. Thermal appliances can lift the root zone of your hair, while light waves or curls will lock in volume along its entire length. For maximum results, tilt your head down while blow drying and use your fingers to create extra volume at the roots.

5) Flip the parting to the other side

Whichever way you want to go, it's more likely that your hair is used to it. Shifting your parting to an unusual side can add volume to your hair. Try to put a parting into your hair once you wash it and then do it again while you're blow-drying. For best results, fix the parting with hairspray.

6) Use Special Shampoos

The first thing you need to look for when choosing a shampoo is not its nice smell and affordable price, but the label. Examine it carefully for the presence of conditioning ingredients. Give preference to transparent blends - they do not contain conditioner and, therefore, do not weigh your hair. But you should not do without hair conditioner either: buy it in a separate bottle and apply it only to the main length of the hair, leaving aside from the roots about 7 cm.

7) Master styling with a brushing brush

A brush with a round base, when used properly while blow-drying, will not only give your hair the volume it needs, but will also help you make a beautiful salon-style style on your own. The broom is suitable for any hair length and structure and helps to form neat curls on the whole length. While styling, comb through your hair to give your style a light and airy effect. So, here's the easiest brushing technique:

- treat dried hair with a styling product, separate the top part of the hair and fix it with a clamp;
- divide the rest of the hair into two equal parts;
- start styling the hair from the back of the head, combing it with a brush;
- alternately curl the strands on the brush, raising them at the roots, and blow-dry at an angle of 45 degrees;
- once the strand is sufficiently heated and shaped, cool it with cold air;
- when finished, do not forget to spray the style with a fixing hairspray.

11 facts to know if you're getting hair extensions

Quickly change the hair style, add length and volume helps hair extensions. This procedure has won the hearts of many women, so we prepared 12 interesting facts about it. We will tell you what methods of hair extension exist, whether it is bad for the hair and which hair extension is the most trendy today.

1) Hair stylists use artificial and natural materials

Hairdressers use two types of hair for extensions: artificial and natural. Pros and cons have both, but many masters are still inclined to the second option. It is worth noting that natural strands are well processed and dyed, as they become almost colorless after all manipulations. When choosing a material, it is important to know: artificial can cause allergies - people prone to it, first need to weigh all the pros and cons.

2) Extensions are carried out by different methods

Which method of hair extensions to choose, depends only on you - here play a key role and wishes, and the quality of their own hair. Let's talk about each method in detail.

Ribbon hair extension. Adding volume and length to the hair is made with the help of tapes on an adhesive basis. Not everyone is suitable for this method: such a buildup on sparse and weak hair almost does not hold. The main advantage of the tape build-up is the time you spend on the procedure. You will need to spend about half an hour in the hairdresser's chair. This is the fastest method of extensions of all presented. Correction of hair will be required after 2 months.

Cold extension. This kind of build-up is done with a special glue and does not require any additional conditions. It takes about two hours, and you should come to the salon again in three months.

Hot extension. Keratin is the main component of this type of hair extension. When exposed to high temperature, it binds the extra strands to natural ones, and the whole process takes from two to three hours. It is almost impossible to distinguish the printed strands from your own hair during the hot hair extension, and you will need to make changes to your hair in 3 months.

The Japanese method of hair extension. It's also called the bead-assisted method of hair extension: they are attached to the natural hair. Then, on a special clip the beads were attached to fix the hair strands. The hair will last from three to five months, and the procedure itself takes about two hours.

3) Augmented hair curls better

Hair stylist Matt Fugate has done hair styles for many celebrities. He notes: extensions curl well and make great curls. Of course, as with everything, there are nuances. For example, it is not recommended to curl hair on thermal rollers: they are quite heavy and create an additional load on the hair bindings. How to curl hair without using a curler, curler or hair dryer, we have already told. Another important fact: extensions of hair are curled faster than your own strands, this should be taken into account when creating a hairstyle. And the shape they hold longer, so the ideal is to curl your own strands a little more and to wait until they cool down and a little bit shredded, and then finish twisting the extensions. This way you can achieve a homogeneous hairstyle.

4) With the help of extensions you can make a "test-drive" bangs

Many people find it difficult to make bangs because of fears that they will not fit the face and will have to grow them, experiencing discomfort. To experiment and to carry out a "test-drive" of the new image, it is worth resorting to hair extensions. Especially modern masters offer to do a procedure in which the artificial hair is indistinguishable from your own, and the way they are attached, no one will notice.

5) It is not recommended to add hair extensions if you lose a lot of hair

Human hair loss ranges from 50 to 150 hairs a day. If the loss is much stronger, hair extensions will only increase the load on the hair follicles. In this case, you should first consult a doctor to understand the causes of hair loss and choose a hair treatment option. And then, when the process stops or reduces, you can tweak your hair.

6) Brushing requires care

Nothing complicated is added to daily combing, you just need to remember some details. For example, you should not try too actively to unravel the strands - you should do it slowly and carefully. It is better to spend a little more time, so as not to damage the bindings of the hair extensions. And give preference to a comb with a wide spacing between the teeth.

7) It won't be cheap

There are temporary variants of hair extension, when the period of wearing the strands is not long, and long-term, from 2 to 4 months, with subsequent correction. The first option can be done cheaper due to the simpler materials, as they will be present in the hair for a short time. For the second option, you need to choose only high-quality, natural hair. Accordingly, and the price for such hair extensions will be higher. What unites these two variants is that you should by no means save on the salon where the procedure is performed. Competent masters are constantly learning the techniques and invest a lot of effort and money in education. Accordingly, they expect a decent payment for their work. In return, you get a beautiful hairstyle done with minimal impact on your own hair.

8) Proper extensions and care do almost no harm to your hair

Extensions are one of the most talked about topics: many people talk about its harms, giving colorful examples of when it has gone wrong. To avoid damaging your hair and make extensions virtually harmless, it's important to pay attention to these important facts:

- Most unsuccessful extensions occur when poor quality materials are chosen because of a desire to save money. Also, employees of the salon can do it intentionally, not caring about their reputation and the consequences. We conclude: apply only to proven salons, read reviews, learn more about the materials before the procedure;

- With proper care and follow the recommendations of the hairdresser, neither your own, nor the built-up strands will suffer. Let your hair dry before you go to bed, or apply balm only to the lengths - very simple rules that many people neglect - and get a negative experience;

- Timely touch-ups are crucial for the beauty of your hair and the health of your own hair. Make an appointment at the salon in advance and do not "overdo" the artificial curls;

- The choice of the master plays a key role. Each type of hair extensions has its own nuances and secrets that you need to be aware of. Lack of skill or simple negligence on the part of the master may lead to not the best consequences, so choose the specialist carefully. Be sure to talk to him before you sign up for a procedure, ask all the questions you have. Also, find out where he received his education, how often he goes on refresher courses and what experience he has in general.

9) Botox for hair can be done with extensions

Hair stylists recommend that the procedure be done before proceeding to hair extensions. However, if this is not the case, you can do Botox after, making sure that the specialist has the right product and skills. It should be noted that after Botox, hair extensions require more care, this will allow you to maintain the result of the procedure longer. For example, you will need to dry your hair naturally, and wash your hair on the third day after visiting the salon.

10) Improper extensions can cause itching

If for a few days after visiting the salon you experience discomfort from the new hairstyle, it is too early to panic, because it is completely normal. However, the persistent itching and discomfort after a week can indicate a correctly held buildup. For example, in the pursuit of volume were picked up too heavy strands or too many of them. Many hairdressers-beginners of hair extensions make the mistake of attaching the extended strands at different distances from the roots of the hair. Such unevenness of the hairstyle contributes to irritation of the nerve endings of the scalp and a constant itching. The situation is unpleasant, but solvable: a specialist will either recommend a shampoo for itching, or remove the extensions.

11) In the trend for colored strands and volume extensions

The trend in hair extensions for the most daring is colored strands. It is not necessary to dye your own hair in blue or pink: additional curls of unusual shades are widely available in the salons. And if you do not want something too radical, you can freshen up your hair by adding strands 2-3 shades lighter than your own color. And another interesting fact: the popularity of hair extensions is gaining for volume, not for length. Women all over the world are trying to make their hair look thicker, and this type of hair extensions will definitely be popular for a long time.
