In the fourth episode of ARCHIPCAST, we sit down with Shota Tsikoliya, a studio leader at ARCHIP since 2020, an architect with a PhD from UMPRUM, and a member of Studio COLLARCH. Shota shares his approach to teaching, discussing the balance between vertical and horizontal hierarchies in education, the focus of last semester’s studio, and the emerging role of AI in architecture. 📐 You can play this and all the other episodes of ARCHIPCAST on YouTube and Spotify - link in bio 🔗 #ARCHIPCAST #ARCHIP #ArchitecturalInstituteInPrague

🎙️ In the second episode of ARCHIPCAST, Jaroslav Wertig takes us back to his early days as an architect. Fresh out of school, his first clients were the three Fs, he says, "family, fools, and friends." Instead of staying in busy Prague, he chose to move back to Františkovy Lázně, where the opportunities were wide open. You can play the second episode of ARCHIPCAST on YouTube and Spotify.

Listen to our first podcast guest, Jakub Kopecký, reminiscing about his early years in the architecture field. He noticed the different working methods and approaches of employers, particularly evident in the compensation for their work. This discussion was then sparked by a comment from Jan Kasl, President of the Czech Chamber of Architects, who stated: “Young architects are whining, it’s always been hard.” What do you think—how do generational differences shape work attitudes and conditions in architecture today? 📐 #ARCHIPCAST #ARCHIP #ArchitecturalInstituteInPrague #StudyAtARCHIP

Today, let's see another video from Andy's winning project from last semester's GoRo awards! 📍 Anders Haagenrud 📏 motionLAB studio Anders' 34 sq. meters rented apartment in Vršovice was imaginatively adapted with moving and transformable elements to house four other family members. The scheme provides sleeping and living in the desired external unheated climate in an expandable extension for his mother, an expanded and enriched subdividable kitchen for his favourite cooking and space for storing and book reading for his father. Anders' athletic sister can climb to her bunkbed on folding stairs or practice her saxophone in an openable acoustic hub. At the same time, their younger brother can enjoy gaming in privacy on a new bunk bed with a lifting seat to climb in. Anders can work and study at all available workspaces with newly designed folding worktops and seats and can continue to sleep in his existing bunk bed with a new retractable ladder.

motionLab01 continues exploring moving art and architecture! The kinetic sculpture "New Time" (better known as Metronom or Pendulum) has been part of the Prague panorama for the past 31 years after being moved from its original site at The Exhibition area at Holesovice. This kinetic piece inspired the current project of motionlab01, which aims to generate ideas for the neglected area around the Metronom so that all citizens and visitors can SHARE this splendid site despite the deep political scar that it historically carries.

Sharing Time, Religion and Civic Architecture - motionLab01 with Robert Voticky
Sharing Time, Religion and Civic Architecture - motionLab01 with Robert Voticky In early November, our students from the motionLab01 studio visited the Orloj - the astrological clock at Old Prague Town Hall and got an exclusive look inside. Academic sculptor Peter Skala, who specializes in clockwork mechanisms and maintains clockwork at Orloj, St. Vitus's cathedral, and other significant buildings, shared his informed commentary with the students. 🙌 From the original idea in 1410 to the addition of the calendar clock and moving statues in the 17th century, the clock's intricate mechanical parts were updated with the inclusion of the Apostles in 1866. Not many people have an opportunity to see the complex and updated mechanical part of the moving elements on a civic building, which even today draws crowds of spectators. Studio's thanks for this opportunity go to the Magistrate of Prague and L.Hainz s.r.o. Company!

Revolving Auditorium in Český Krumlov
Sharing Culture and Architecture - motionLab01 with Robert Voticky Let's take a look at the revolving auditorium of the open-air theatre in Český Krumlov! Our students got an exclusive look at the mechanical marvels beneath, from electromotors to a refurbished seating area and the guiding tower with the main controlling panel. 🛠️ It was a unique experience to see the functioning auditorium in full, a true homage to the hugely successful idea of stage designer Joan Brehms from 1958. The facility's current state results from a major redesign of machinery by Škoda a.s. Plzeň and the stage design by Cultact Brno between 1989 and 1993. The existing dislike of the position of the auditorium by the National Heritage Institute and UNESCO could be resolved by designing a new contemporary open-air auditorium with audience facilities on a site further from the gardens. Imagine the possibilities for students to dive into such a project!

...at the ends of the lines... is there „too much green“? Introducing the Schindler/Fessler studio brief for this semester 🚋 This semester explores multiple sites spanning the entire city, each a typical urban condition with its own unique features. What architectural renewals can make these wastelands more than green? What activities, spaces, movements, relations, forms are possible in these places? How can these infrastructural islands become destinations, hubs or meeting points? How to bring these empty edges to life? Propose a project to “re-place’” the ends of the tram lines.
