A month ago, at the Colours of Ostrava Melting Pot, Regina Loukotová and Winy Maas explored an intriguing question: Do Czechs think the way they build? 🇨🇿
How does national identity shape architecture? While Czechs may lean towards a more pessimistic view, they are masters of improvisation in design. In contrast, the Dutch are renowned for their meticulous and detailed planning.
But what about large-scale urban and landscape planning in Czechia? 🏙️🌳 Unlike the Dutch approach, which emphasizes comprehensive planning, Czech cities often lack a clear, large-scale vision.
Do you believe there is a need for more strategic urban and landscape planning in Czechia? Share your thoughts!

Summer school has officially kicked off!🌞

This year’s theme is “Gesamtkunstwerk” - the total work of art. Yesterday, we started with our guide, Marcela Macháčková, right in the heart of Prague, where we toured the DRN Palace, the historic Carolinum and the Municipal House.

Meet Zuzana Drahotová, one of our incredible studio leaders! 🌟
Zuzana is a seasoned architect and her journey in architecture is a mix of passion, innovation, and an eye for detail. She co-designed Kunsthalle Praha, transforming a historical building into a modern space. Her experiences span from studying in Prague and Liechtenstein to working in Zurich, always with a focus on minimalism and sustainability. She believes in the beauty of simplicity and the power of precise craftsmanship. And she loves visiting small towns to discover hidden architectural gems! One of her favourites is Flims in Switzerland, for example.

As we are very excited to welcome MVRDV’s founding partner, Winy Maas, as a new studio leader next semester, let’s take a closer look at one of MVRDV’s standout projects: the Pyramid in Tirana. 🏛️✨

Originally built as a museum, this iconic structure now features colorful spaces for cafes, studios, workshops and free tech education for Albanian youth. Steps and slides on the facade invite everyone to engage with this historic place in a new, dynamic way.

What do you think about transforming historic buildings like this? Share your thoughts!

Architectural Design Course is the cornerstone of our programme and we are thrilled to announce that one of our Design studios will be led by a Dutch architect Winy Maas. His position will start in September 2024 with the topic “city movements: the mobility master” with studies on the relationships between new mobilities and cityscapes.
This is a further development of Mr. Maas’ successful academic activities in the Czech Republic, which started in 2022 as a guest professor at Prague’s Czech Technical University, Faculty of Architecture. One of his successful projects, CZ02 - Visions for the future of the Czech Republic, brought together students from five universities in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands and presented their thoughts on the country’s future. Students sparked hundreds of ideas for reforestation, national parks, industrial production, transport infrastructure, housing, demography, population density, ecology, sociology or economics in this unique project. The results are placed on the huge map of the Czech Republic, which travels around the country at the moment.
Winy Maas is a landscape architect, urban planner, architect and founding partner of MVRDV, renowned international studio based in Rotterdam. Besides his work for MVRDV, he is a Professor of Urbanism and Architecture at the Delft University of Technology, where he leads a global research think-tank - The Why Factory.

We want to invite you to a public presentation of this semester’s work results of our students!
In an informal afternoon gathering, we will be presenting the student projects, but also we want everyone to join the discussion about the future of Albertov.

As part of the Kurilla-Prokop studio, our students have been focusing on the Albertov area all semester.
Understanding its current state, learning about its past and creating proposals that would improve the lives of its users.
The event is an informal student exhibition and will be followed by a discussion and party. 💃🏻

We would love your views, which are important as together they shape the future of the area.

Our Vice-Rector Klára Doleželová recently attended the EAAE Deans' Summit hosted by the Academy of Architecture at the Amsterdam University of the Arts on 25-26 April. The event focused on preparing architecture students for the future challenges they will face in their careers.

It was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas on improving our curriculum to prepare our students for the dynamic world of architecture.

Social Ecology Trip 🌿

At the end of April, our students spent three days in Olomouc as part of the Social Ecology course, going beyond the textbooks and engaging directly with their surroundings.
Throughout the trip, they studied the Morava River to understand its influence on the city’s architecture and social ecology, exploring the connection between urban spaces and nature. They examined how greenery connects with architectural design to foster community and ecological harmony. And the trip also included a visit to the Archdiocesan Museum! 🏰
Trips like this really bring lessons to life, connecting students to real-world contexts.

ARCHIP Student: Sharai Serrette 🔍

"My parents were building a house and took me along to the meeting with the architect, and ever since seeing those blueprints, I knew what I wanted to do."

Check out an interview with one of our master's students, Sharai!
See the full interview below – why he decided to study architecture, what brought him to ARCHIP, and what project he is working on.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

▪️ Where are you from, and why did you decide to study architecture?
My name is Sharai Serrette, and I am from Trinidad, Trinidad & Tobago. I have been fascinated by the building industry since I was young. My parents were building a house and took me along to the meeting with the architect, and ever since seeing those blueprints, I knew what I wanted to do: bring joy to people's faces, materialize their dreams, and create a home.

▪️ Why did you choose ARCHIP?
I chose ARCHIP because their course and teaching style (from research) appealed to me the most out of all the architecture schools in the Czech Republic. They combined the best of both the technical and the artistic in a pragmatic and real way that just sparked my interest.

▪️ What do you like about ARCHIP the most?
ARCHIP is very diverse in its teachings, and I like the ability to observe my classmates and see how their approach to architecture stems from the many diverse backgrounds that made their way to ARCHIP. Additionally, the size of the school reminded me of where I did my B.A. and the opportunities and benefits of being a part of a smaller school: the one-on-one interactions, close net student body, student socials, smaller class sizes and the ability to interact across the years from 1st year to master's.
I have actually recommended ARCHIP to a few people, one of whom transferred from their school and is now enrolled here. So, I guess I'm doing some scouting for them, hehe.

▪️ What has been the most exciting project for you so far?
Considering that I've been here only for one semester so far, the current project that I'm undertaking is by far the most interesting of the two. Maybe it has to do with me being more comfortable within the student body and in the studios, or maybe it's the studio itself, maybe a combination of the two.
The project is centred around Prague 2150 and how, when, where, and what I envision for it. Will it become smaller (the boundaries), or will it spread and engulf some small villages and municipalities, or will it stay the same size, growing within itself? What will the climate be? Freezing or Overheating? Maybe both?
The concept that I envision happening is a densification of the metro termination points and major junctions (guided by Prague's future metro map). Out of those points, a hub for housing, office, and retail will shoot skyward, as if to say the metro (even though it's underground) has somehow breached the surface at its last stop and aims for the sun.
