The placement of the bar, as the protagonist of the coffeehouse, was determined by an elaborate study of customer and work flows conducted in collaboration with the client. For our design we aimed to respect the existing structures of the winery, while also creating a new architectural presence in the landscape. By embedding the building into the slope of the site, it extends the existing plaza into a covered terrace with various public programs, such as a bar, event space, restaurant and ceremonial hall. What elements can architecture ultimately be reduced to if the purpose of a structure merely symbolic?
