Buildings & spaces for urban culture.
Sustainability is a key consideration in our material choices. Concrete is used only where its solidity and strength can be put to good use — for the basement areas and the core. To maximise the use of renewable resources, the structure, facade cladding and interior finishes are all made of wood. An aluminum roof enhances longevity and is infinitely recyclable as a building material.

The plans show the first and ground floors respectively. The building's volume is derived from an efficient organisation of the desired programs. The ground floor serves as the main library space and is partitioned by a series of spatial volumes that house social services, a meeting room, and the connection to the town hall. The upper floor accommodates educational spaces and can function autonomously due to a separate entrance via the communal balcony. Movable shelves have been integrated into the main library space to enhance its flexibility, allowing for various alternative uses such as lectures and public events.

No space goes to waste – reading tables are seamlessly integrated into the niches between the wooden columns, offering the visitors a secluded place to immerse themselves in a book. Various specific programs are encapsulated in solid volumes across both floors and are connected by a centrally placed spiral staircase and an open corridor which adds a sense of spaciousness to the otherwise compact building geometry. A large window in the back frames a view toward the St. Katharinen Church.

Attendant 4 offers a serene escape from the bustling corporate world that surrounds it. Two perpendicularly placed banquette seating islands enclose the central sit-down area and aim to provide the customers with a sense of seclusion when seated.

Like a metallic serpent, the elongated bar curves fluidly into a u-shape, from the long end which is used to serve food and coffee, to the short end which has an integrated cocktail-station to mix drinks during after-work hours. Through the multi-functionality of the bar and the simplicity of the overall design, the project aims to provide a timeless and lasting aesthetic.
