Whisking all members of Kumar Yoga Berlin and all yogis including family & friends a wonderful prosperous Tamil New Year.

Tamil New year also called Puthandu (புத்தாண்டு) or Tamil varusha pirappu (தமிழ் வருட பிறப்பு) is the celebration of the Tamil New Year as per the Tamil calendar. Tamil New Year marks the beginning of Chithirai month, the beginning month of the Tamil solar calendar and Puthandu marks the onset of the new calendric year.

On the Gregorian calendar, Tamil New Year falls most likely on the 14th of April. This day is celebrated with immense enthusiasm and fervour in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and also in places outside India that has significant Tamil population.

In Kerala it is celebrated as Vishu, in Orissa as Pana Sankranti, in West Bengal as Poila Boishak, in Assam as Bihu and in Punjab this day is observed as Vaisakhi. These festivals coincide with the Mesha Sankranti that marks the beginning of the New Year as per the Indian Solar Calendar.

2024 NEW YEAR YOGIC IGNITION

A Workshop to Set Your Sankalpa (Intention) by Krishna Kumar Krishnan

Saturday 6th JAN 2024
16:00h - 18:00h
YogaSky

USC members are Welcome!

Have you already set your new year’s resolutions? You’re still on time! But instead of choosing resolutions you most probably won’t follow through the whole year, why not give them a “yogic” twist and set a Sankalpa (intention) instead. Dig deeper this year to find a genuine purpose!

What Is A Sankalpa?

A Sankalpa is a positive resolve usually made before a yoga practice or meditation. It’s a commitment you make to yourself but the main difference with a New Year’s resolution is that a Sankalpa starts from the radical premise that you already are who you need to be to be happy or to reach your Dharma. On the other hand, the usual New Year’s resolution often starts with a negative perception of ourselves: Quit smocking = I’m not healthy, lose weight = I’m too fat, etc. They are usually made from the ego and that is why they don’t last.

Write me a message through my website www.kumar-yoga.com for a special 10% code.

abhyāsa-vairāgya-ābhyāṁ tan-nirodhaḥ
Patanjali Yoga Sutras 1.12

The above-cited Patanjali yoga sutras hold a lot of significance in Yoga, as well as in ourdaily life. Let me explain word by word first, so that you can understand the overall meaning initially. And then we go for illustrations and explanations for deepest knowledge.

Abhyasa is practice
vairagya is non-attachments
abhyam refers to together
tan means their(of the five mental modifications)
nirodah means to control or cessation.

What is Abhyasa?

Abhyasa is the process of practicing any subject that we take part in consistently without a break.

What is Vairagya?

It is important to include vairagya in our attachments and relationships. The absence of our beloved ones will make us sorrowful due to our attachment to this particular person. So, it is relevant to maintain our mental happiness with or without the person’s presence. To make this process easy, we should practice vairagya (non-attachment) in our relationships on a daily basis.

Practicing vairagya will help us to maintain mental equilibrium and balancing of our life. Nothing is permanent in this universe even our body as it is perishable one day. So, if we don’t practice non-attachment, the absence of a particular person will lead to self-destruction as well as there are high chances for mental anomalies. Along with the vairagya practice, one can form a narrow gap between the attached persons with the help of the attached-detachment practice which is also referred to as the neutral mind. As a result, people can be free from over-attachment. This process is also applicable to every matter of human life such as the usage of drugs, consumption of alcohol, sleep, s*x, etc. The person who practices vairagya or non-attachment habits will survive any issues related to over-attachment.

Kriya Yoga according Maharishi Patanjali consists of three components:
Tapas
Svadhyaya
Eshvara Pranidhana

Tapas helps us assess our physical capacity.

Svadhyaya cultivate our mental ability and intellectual grasp.

Eshvara pranidhana allows us to see the depth of our emotional maturity.

Together these three help us see our strengths and weaknesses, and, with proper guidance, help us design a course of practice that is perfect for our overall growth and development. Let us examine these three components more closely.

By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind retains its undisturbed calmness.

My father says:
„Remember, your goal is to keep the serenity of the mind.” Whether interested in yoga or not, he says, this tool will help anyone maintain the peacefulness through anything. Keeping this sutra handing or at the forefront of our mind will help us get through so many of life’s challenges.

Maharishi Patanjali says that there are only four kinds of locks in the world. The four locks are:

sukha (happy people)
dukha (unhappy people)
punya (the virtuous)
apunya (the not-so-virtuous)

At any given moment, any person – can fit into one of these four categories. Patanjali gives 4 keys to open these locks. He says that if we always keep these 4 keys with us, when we come across any of these four locks, we will have the proper key to open it.

The four keys are: maitri (friendliness or loving-kindness), karuna (compassion), mudita (delight), and upeksha (disregard or equanimity). He reminds us that there is a Yogic way of approaching all people, no matter what behaviors and attitudes they may be exhibiting at the moment.

Swadyaya means self study in Yoga Philosophy. It means more than what we learn about ourselves beyond the views which we are contradicting our true nature. Stop comparing others and looking our qualities which can be not valuable fir other but it is your strength. Never underestimate your inner true qualities which opens up many gates in the subtle body. Find some quiet time to explore your true hidden qualities that can be beneficial for your spiritual progression.

The past weeks, I’ve been regulating my moods and learning how to stay positive in a negative situation that is completely out of my control. As a therapist and mental health professional I’ve had years of training on this topic, but it’s a completely different experience when you put the theories into action for yourself. I am now feeling much more steady handling the unexpectedly situations in life.

From my personal opinion, the most important things we can do to stay positive right now include maintaining our connection to friends and family, acknowledging that this situation is temporary, and building small daily habits that bring comfort. Below are some of very actionable tips:

1. REMEMBER THAT EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY

2. STAY CONNECTED WITH PEOPLE YOU LOVE

3. SEND AN ENCOURAGEMENT HANDWRITTEN CARD

4. GET A GRACEFUL MOVEMENT LIKE YOGA

5. PRINT PHOTOS TO REMINISCE ON GOOD TIMES

6. GIVE YOURSELF MINDFUL TIME ALONE

7. HELP OTHERS
