Thank you.

The Museum Berggruen, opposite to Charlottenburg Palace, complements the collection of modern art held at the Neue Nationalgalerie with its singular works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, and Alberto Giacometti.

Happy International Day of Friendship! 🌟

In 1950, Heinz Berggruen met Picasso through avant-garde poet Tristan Tzara in Paris, marking the beginning of numerous collaborations and a long-lasting friendship between the artist and the art dealer. Nineteen years later, the two friends saw each other for the last time in Cannes, where Picasso dedicated „Minotauromachy“ to his friend Berggruen.

Enchanted Reverie: Klee and Calder in New York is on view until June 8!

The exhibition presents Paul Klee (1879-1940) and Alexander Calder (1898-1976) in dialogue, illuminating their shared metaphysical understanding of the universe’s unseen forces. It emphasizes their respective investigations and interests in natural forms and kinetic energies.

Happy Birthday to Georges Braque! 🥳🎨

Born on May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil, France, Georges Braque, together with Pablo Picasso, is regarded as the co-founder of Cubism. After he had completed an apprenticeship as a decorator and finished studying art, Georges Braque was initially influenced by the painting of the Fauves. Greatly impressed by a retrospective of Cézanne’s work in 1907, he subsequently developed a proto-Cubist language of forms. From 1909, Braque and Picasso collaborated with one another in perfecting this idiom, making it the pictorial substructure of Cubism.

Discover more “Elective Affinities“ between the collections of Museum Berggruen and Gallerie dell’ Accademia, currently displayed in Venice. In the first installation view, we invite you to look closely at the hands of Dora Maar and Giorgione’s mother in these two intimate portraits. The second one reveals how familiar Picasso was with classic iconography, you’ll note that in this representation of an antique feast he even exaggerated the color distinction between the pale female figures and the stronger tones of the male characters.

To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, we would like to present Paul Klee’s “Landscape in Green” from 1922. Klee was an artist who was very deeply inspired by and connected to nature or his surrounding environment. Klee believed in the interconnectedness of all things and thus the power nature can hold to form our creativity and further spirituality.

In “Landscape in Green”, currently on view at in Venice as part of ‘Elective Affinities’, we can see nature and man-made structures seamlessly conjoin to form endless expanding landscape. Nature and humanity seem to be living in idyllic harmony. Let’s try to value and cherish our connection to nature just as Klee did, not just on Earth Day, but always!

Happy April Fool’s Day! 🤡 🎈🎊

Have a look at this mischievous portrayal of a ‘Sitting Harlequin’ by Pablo Picasso!

This work, painted in 1905, belongs to the series of harlequins and acrobats that Picasso painted just after his ‘Blue Period’. Did you know that Picasso’s works of harlequins and acrobats are far more than just amusing figures? They become the alter ego of the artist, whose facial features are reflected in them. Here in particular, with his Napoleonic twin-cornered hat, „Sitting Harlequin“ appears as both a sad jester and a thoughtful hero.

Happy Birthday Henri Laurens!

Today we celebrate the French sculptor and illustrator, born on February 18, 1885, in Paris. Laurens was known for uniting classical and modern principles in his three-dimensional sculptures. Inspired by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Georges Braque, and Pablo Picasso, he created impressive works that continue to captivate audiences.

His early terracotta sculptures evolved into unconventional pieces using materials like sheet metal and plaster, with a generous use of color. His collaboration with Cubist artists influenced his later works, including the famous "Sirenes" series.
Let's celebrate the legacy of this talented artist! 🎨✨

Happy Birthday Heinz!

Born in Berlin in 1914, Berggruen emigrated to the USA in 1936. After the second world war, he founded a gallery in Paris, which soon became one of the leading addresses in the international art scene. In his later years, Berggruen dedicated himself to expanding his own art collection he wished to share with the world. In 1996, he opened his collection to the public in Berlin, the city he was driven out from 60 years earlier. This gesture of reconciliation deeply impressed his contemporaries.

In recognition of his contributions, Heinz Berggruen was named an honorary citizen of the city of Berlin and received the “Prize for Understanding and Tolerance” from the Jewish Museum Berlin in 2005. Today, we honor Heinz Berggruen’s legacy and his invaluable contributions to the art world. We hope that his passion for art and dedication to promoting understanding and tolerance through cultural exchange will continue to inspire us all for many more years to come.

Happy New Year!

🎉 Skip, hop and jump into the new year with Matisse’s playful masterpiece ‚Blue N**e Skipping’ from 1952!✨

Did you know that after 1948, Matisse’s ill health prevented him from painting? Despite this, he continued to create works like this one, known as gouaches découpées. These were made by cutting or tearing shapes from painted paper and pasting them down with the help of his assistant. One might say he was drawing with scissors. 👨‍🎨✂️

Our Story
