The quality of Italian cuisine is based on the quality of its ingredients. For Italians, the quality of the basic ingredients in their dishes is everything. For some, it’s even as important as the air they breathe. This is why classic, homemade Italian food is incomparable to any other in the world. Its richness of taste belies its apparent simplicity, and it’s all down to the superior quality of those timeless, key elements that truly makes traditional Italian cooking so flavourful.

'Originale' is not just another recipe book. It is, in essence, a guide. A manual on how to do it like the Italians. The dozens of inspiring recipes within these pages are built from a handful of crucial ingredients that, if sourced correctly—as detailed in this book—can transport you directly to the kitchens of Rome, Naples, or Bologna via your own plate.

'Originale' is lovingly curated to celebrate the enduring nature of Italian cuisine, its history, and culture. Buon appetito!

Arcosanti, an 80-acre (32-hectare), 1970s experimental desert community an hour north of Phoenix, was conceived by visionary Italianborn architect Paolo Soleri.

Hoping to create an alternative to the anonymity and sprawl of the country’s fast-growing suburbs, the architect built the futuristic, self-sustaining hill town, located on a former cattle ranch rising above the Sonoran Desert, as a learning laboratory and production center. And today, it still functions as Soleri intended, with resident “arconauts” working the fields, repairing and creating structures, and fashioning alien bronze and ceramic bells, whose sales largely sustain the operation.

Warm and inviting, sophisticated and upscale, Laurel Brasserie & Bar’s distinctive ambiance is fueled by a love for European cuisine, culture,
and design. “Yet it’s filtered through a decidedly American sensibility,” says the restaurant’s designer Oliver Haslegrave, founder of Home Studios, based in New York City. “In this commission, we sought to create that environment and treat it like an extension of the client’s home, where a collection of European heirlooms and treasures have been passed down from generation to generation.”

Created partially in tribute to the 1920s architecture of the surrounding Garbatella neighborhood, the Roman bar-restaurant Tre de Tutto combines classic modern design with rich pops of color.

“Owners Mirko Tommasi and Daniele Notte offer revisited classics of Roman cuisine, taking inspiration from one of the most authentic neighborhoods in Rome,” says Matteo Soddu, cofounder of Studiotamat, the atelier responsible for Tre de Tutto’s design. “In the same way, our goal from the beginning was not to distort the preexisting space but to enhance it and, at the same time, bond with its clientele.” Spread across two levels, the restaurant’s refined yet playful interior is set inside a local bakery that had long been abandoned.

Out front, the glass facade offers a striking view inside the lively space, where a bright-white background highlights the vibrant rainbow colors of the flooring as well as the orange staircase leading up to the second floor.

Commissioned to transform the site into a physical restaurant for the previously online-only brand, local studio Nitsche Arquitetos has achieved the almost impossible feat of making the site stand out in Brazil’s most populous city. The automobile is, undeniably, the backbone of the last 100 years of American society. The likes of Ford, Plymouth, and Chevrolet, defined a new era for the United States, from transcontinental travel to suburban family transportation. From the mass production of the Model T all the way through to the electric age of the Tesla, the automobile has been a staple in American culture for generations.

But these cars were not just practical machines. For many they projected an image of cool, represented a way of life, or was a means to make a living. The great American road trip was born behind a wheel, the Dodge Challenger ripped up the screen in Vanishing Point, and the city of Detroit rose and fell dramatically off the back of the American automobile industry.

'The Americans - Beautiful Machines' celebrates the likes of the Mustang, Gran Torino, Corvette, and many of the other classic models that put American automobiles firmly into the 20th Century American zeitgeist. Located in the northeast corner of the island of Tasmania, the Derby sauna provides a welcome escape.

A small, unimposing bridge leads from the dramatic, densely forested shore of Briseis Hole, also known as Lake Derby, to two small floating structures. These gabled, shed-like buildings, one light, one dark, and built to mirror each other, belong to the Derby Floating Sauna. The white structure, built from light-permeable cladding, hosts a bright and airy changing room. Contrastingly, the sauna structure is built from burnt larch and is designed to evoke a feeling of privacy and comfort.

Few residences tap into our desire for both prospect and refuge quite like John Lautner’s SheatsGoldstein House. Perched on a canyon-side lot
above Beverly Hills, the structure, originally built for artist and professor Helen and Paul Sheats and their family, is organized as a series of dramatic, nature-filled experiences.

Visitors enter through a narrow concrete hall, which opens to a tropical
garden with a concrete-and-glass walkway bridging a koi pond. From here, the space unwraps until you reach the living room, with its gridded,
angular roof (Lautner pierced its star-like holes with drinking glasses) opening via a tall glass wall to a large canyon-side balcony and infinity pool.
Unsurprisingly, given its cinematic aesthetic, the house has been featured in movies, including The Big Lebowski and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
