On the occasion of the opening of Sauebruch Hutton’s exhibition open box, we asked our colleagues which are their favourite means of representation in architecture. Standing in front of @m9museum in Venice-Mestre, Julia Knaak confirms that models are still her favourite working tool. Area Beta Nordelta, Buenos Aires, Argentina
We are happy to announce that we have won the competition for Area Beta, an education and creative hub in the upcoming new centre of Nordelta, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The design envisages a composition of four interlocking structures that form a cluster. For the main part of the programme, the layout of each building is based on a larger circle, which intersects with a smaller circle housing utilities and vertical circulation. This allows for a free division of the floor plan and thus a variety of uses: classrooms, apartments, offices, auditoriums, workshops, etc. In addition, the radial geometry offers short distances, high flexibility and uniform lighting. A uniform axial grid facilitates serial prefabrication and modular construction. A central ring on the 1st floor connects the four parts of the building and creates an area of communal interaction with reading rooms, lounges, meeting rooms, cafes, etc. The ring also covers parts of the ground floor, creating "flowing thresholds" that give the building permeability. Marked by the four volumes and enclosed by the ring, a publicly accessible campus is created that invites both passers-by and students to enter and linger.
