Christmas Draw no.4 — Guess the project on the basis of the facade elevations and win a copy of “The New Experimenta in Heilbronn“.

The extension of the Experimenta Science Center in Heilbronn is a unique building that expresses the city’s transformation into a place of science. In three texts author Florian Heilmeyer undertakes an excursion into Heilbronn’s urban history, guides us through the building itself and its development, and finally locates the design in a broader architectural-theoretical context with an essay on spiral buildings.

Numerous photographs of the building as well as historical images illustrate the chapters.

Sauerbruch Hutton’s installation at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, FREESPACE, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, was a small space surrounded by wooden scaffolding within the monumental structure of the Corderie. The installation condensed the architectural themes of Sauerbruch Hutton’s M9 museum district in Venice Mestre.

Christmas Quiz no. 2 — Guess the project on the basis of the facade elevations and win a copy of “GSW Headquarters Berlin - Sauerbruch Hutton Architects“.

The GSW headquarters in Berlin is an assemblage of five building volumes that extend an office tower from the 1950s. A prototype at the time of completion, this project embodies the paradigm of ecological architecture of the 21st century in an exemplary manner. Within the discussion about the reconstruction of the once-divided capital, this project articulates a response to the city which accepts Berlin‘s historical conglomerate as a structural principle. History is seen as a dynamic process which leaves its traces.

We are glad to announce that Sauerbruch Hutton won the competition for the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences Rostock in cooperation with Kaufmann Bausysteme GmbH and Primus Developments GmbH.
The new campus consists of one academic and two residential buildings framed by a public and car-free green space.

Our latest timber project, Franklin Village, a residential complex with 90 rental units, celebrated its opening last Monday in Mannheim.

While Franklin's central district primarily focuses on providing a nurturing environment for families, the essence of our project lies in fostering a diverse and socially inclusive community. The communal areas serve as the heart and catalyst of a culture of solidarity and coexistence. The "extended living room" or neighborhood forum, with its communal kitchen and common room, becomes a central hub for community life, complemented by a children's playroom and workroom.

The buildings were planned in a timber frame construction with hollow box ceilings on an axial grid of 62.5 cm that results in a high degree of floor plan variability. This approach enables us to economically meet the distinct requirements arising from the mix of uses, while embracing our commitment to sustainability.

We at Sauerbruch Hutton are enthusiastic about what is happening in Bavaria in terms of building type E. On 9th June, we had the chance to discuss the topic in our SHift format at our premises.

Urban Nature — The new headquarters of Médecins Sans Frontières in Geneva stands out with its green façade covered in blossoming flowers. The building is a symbol of adaptability and unity, just like the organisation itself. The three-dimensional, planted façade reflects the internal structure, while large wooden frames form a harmonious puzzle that reflects the collaboration of the individual specialists. The vegetation screen not only enhances the aesthetics of the building, but also improves air quality by absorbing CO2.
