Kunst Raum Mitte
We had the pleasure of hosting „ELEFANT“ last Sunday, a performative exhibition featuring Lissy Willberg and students from Isabel Lewis‘ Class for Performative Arts at HGB Leipzig . Building on their research on the history of galerie weisser elefant and its archival materials, the event provided an opportunity to examine how institutions confront their pasts and reinterpret their narratives through performance.
Inspired by the Permanente Kunstkonferenz, a performance festival that took place at galerie weisser elefant in 1989, Lissy Willberg and the students presented performances that encouraged the audience to reflect on our approaches to documenting and remembering history.
Thank you to the performers:

Can an archive capture the emotional traces of performance art? Join artists Isabel Lewis and Yon Natalie Mik in conversation with Agnieszka Roguski and Natalie Keppler, artistic directors of Kunst Raum Mitte, for "Affective Archives" on 27 October 2024 at 6pm.
The talk will explore the complex relationship between performance art, affect and archival practices. The artists will reflect on the challenges of documenting the ephemeral nature of performance and the emotional, subjective experiences involved. They'll also discuss the potential for rethinking archival methods to encompass what defies traditional classification, transforming emotion, protest and affect into new modes of remembering.
The talk will be held in English.

On October 27, 2024, from 4–5 pm, join us at Kunst Raum Mitte for ELEFANT—a performative exhibition by Lissy Willberg @ allsystemsaretrue in collaboration with students from the Class for Performative Arts at HGB Leipzig , led by Isabel Lewis.
This event explores critical questions about how institutions can reimagine their histories through performance and artistic research: What happens when an institution confronts its past through performance? How do we playfully approach alternative narratives and fragmentary stories? What role do affects and ephemera play in reinterpreting the past?
Through their performances, Lissy Willberg, the students (Adam Harfouch .xmx, Kevin Heather Koen , Andolie Marguerite .lines_, Asya Volodina , Juli Winterstein) and Isabel Lewis will connect the past and present, revisiting the Permanente Kunstkonferenz, a 1989 festival at galerie weisser elefant, as a source of inspiration.
This event is part of Collecting & Un/Learning, within our year-long program DIFFRACTIONS, curated by Natalie Keppler (.keppler) and Agnieszka Roguski (), Artistic Directors of Kunst Raum Mitte.

Let's meet on the playing field of ritual associations! On 25 October, 7 pm, join artist Anna Zett and her guests for a special evening to explore what it means to say "bye bye beginning".
Bye Bye Beginning – Ritual Association & Talk with Anna Zett and Guests:
As part of her research residency, Anna Zett has been working with archival materials from galerie weisser elefant, focusing on the last years of the GDR, when the gallery was an important place for performance, installation, and artistic experimentation. Now, as Kunst Raum Mitte takes starts a new institutional chapter, Zett raises the question of transgenerational handover of experience:
"Where to put it, where does it come from? In the middle, no origin in sight. Beginning – middle – end – beginning. What happened? The ritual doesn’t repeat itself. Bye bye is gathering in the present."
Anna Zett invites a few actors of the years 1987–1990 onto the playing field of Resonanz – Post-Socialist Group Improvisation – a participatory format she developed in 2020/21 in collaboration with the performer and choreographer Hermann Heisig and a group of co-reseachers, among them Ute Waldhausen. For this occasion the game will change its rules. Ritual associations that have emerged in Anna Zett’s research will be performed, experienced and discussed by herself and her guests. Everyone present is invited to participate physically, as well as to make use of the conversational playing positions. This evening invites you to play with these ideas through Resonanz – Post-Socialist Group Improvisation: a participatory game Zett co-developed in 2020/21. Everyone present is invited to engage physically and participate in the conversation between Anna and her guests.
Guests:
Rainer Görß | Hermann Heisig | Ulrike Stöhring | Ute Waldhausen

In den Herbstferien findet unser erster Comic-Workshop “DEN WEISSEN ELEFANTEN HAT ES NIE GEGEBEN” mit der Berliner Künstlerin Dina El Kaisy Friemuth statt!
💥

The sequence Collecting & Un/Learning of the year-long program DIFFRACTIONS begins at the end of October! It revolves around forms of collecting, learning and unlearning history.
📚
Collecting & Un/Learning deals with the questions of how knowledge is produced and shaped – and which methods of collecting are behind it. Historical traces and materials of the former galerie weisser elefant will be collected, and the research methods used to do so will be examined. What determines an institutional archive and how can it be built? At the center are approaches to artistic and curatorial research that deal with little-documented or fleeting aspects of historical materials. The surrounding area of the Kunst Raum Mitte is also included: this serves as a starting point for events at which contemporary witnesses of the galerie weisser elefant talk about their memories of the past and their visions for the future of the neighborhood and its spaces for art from their perspectives.

Some views of the ‘Transforming’ exhibition are now online. Dusty binders are scattered across the floor. Small, inconspicuous orchid blossoms line the walls, forming delicate connections while subtly competing with each other. The hem of a tablecloth brushes the floor. An altar is tucked away in a corner.
The exhibition ‘Transforming’ places the spatial, material and historical relationships of Kunst Raum Mitte in new relationships. Installative and acoustic works of art are on display, which take up the spatial structures in an atmospheric way: Ghostly arrangements, porcelain flowers and subtle sounds mix with concrete and graffiti. Together with selected archive material, the architecture and thus the everyday life of political action is visualised.

On September 12, 2024, Kunst Raum Mitte will open its doors with the exhibition "Transforming" as part of the program DIFFRACTIONS, which embraces the idea of interference and overlapping, revealing new perspectives on both the past and the present. With this in mind, "Transforming" delves into the layers of history and the physical space of the art venue through artistic and curatorial research processes. The exhibition explores questions such as: How is the history of a place written? What role do immaterial structures, such as affects and gatherings, play alongside material ones in this narrative?
Formerly known as galerie weisser elefant, the space at Auguststraße 21 was renamed Kunst Raum Mitte in order to revisit its history and connect it to contemporary debates in a pluralistic society. The exhibition activates historical materials and places them in dialogue with contemporary artistic positions by Jesse Darling, Green Papaya Art Projects (; Norberto Roldan & Joaquin Roldan), Robert Lippok (), Katrin Steiger (.steiger), Minh Duc Pham (.zi), and Pam Virada ().
An exhibition display designed by Martha Schwindling () highlights the hidden and divergent aspects of the site’s history, dating back to the GDR era. This reactivation not only reflects on the past, but also opens up new, contemporary perspectives that challenge current power structures and social changes.
The opening will be featured in the official program of . Stay tuned for detailed information on the program for our opening days.

Set-up:
Thank you for sharing your sports field with us,
Join us tonight for our inaugural public event at 6:30 pm! We’ll gather on an everyday battleground – the sports field – to watch three powerful films showcasing how young people navigate resilience and protest, including through the art of rap.
In "The Battle Over Mazepa" (2023), Mykola Ridnyi () explores the historical significance and contemporary perception of Ivan Mazepa, a political and military leader in 17th- and 18th-century Ukraine. Ridnyi adopts the rap battle format from hip-hop culture to bring together two literary portrayals of Mazepa: Lord Byron’s romantic hero in "Mazeppa" (1819) and Pushkin’s imperialist traitor in "Poltava" (1828-29). Collaborating with Professor Susanne Strätling and four rap performers, Ridnyi deconstructs these narratives, blending historical themes with modern hip-hop to reflect on Mazepa's relevance today.
"The Battle Over Mazepa" is realized with support by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe (Ad-hoc Fellowship) in collaboration with the Berlin Artistic Research Programme.

What better setting for our open-air screening (29 August) featuring Julia Charlotte Richter's film "Training" than the sports field as a ground for gathering and action?
"Training" (2014) delves into forms of protest and the role of female* activism among young girls in Georgia, capturing an intimate atmosphere of preparation, exploration, and rebellion. What remains for these girls beyond their seemingly naive fight for change?
We’re excited to have Julia Charlotte Richter with us for an artist talk before the screening!

Join us on a sports field for an open-air screening on August 29!
Commoning focuses on moments of togetherness and their potential to shape places and histories. We therefore invite you to join us on the sports field opposite Kunst Raum Mitte for an open-air screening of films by Julia Charlotte Richter, Mykola Ridnyi, and Anna Zett. These films challenge the notion of history as an objective past, instead reimagining it through collective experiences. They center the perspectives of young people, whose youth symbolizes both entry into and resistance against pre-existing structures. Through their lens, resilience and protest are practiced, performed, and brought to life using pop culture to make history present and the incomprehensible tangible.
The evening begins with an artist talk featuring Julia Charlotte Richter and Anna Zett.
Schedule
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm: Artist Talk with Julia Charlotte Richter and Anna Zett (in German)
8 pm – 9 pm: Screening

The program sequence Commoning marks the start of DIFFRACTIONS 2024. It includes a video screening and a comic workshop that explore moments of coming together in the spatial environment of Kunst Raum Mitte and their potential to influence places and their narratives. What interpretations of a possible story emerge when a place is viewed from different perspectives, and what role does its surroundings play in this?
Commoning examines the possibilities of resistance and protest through moments of gathering and builds on an understanding of space that incorporates the neighborhood of Kunst Raum Mitte as well as the everyday aspects of the place.
The program sequence features a photo-comic workshop for young people (August 26‐29 | 10 am-1 pm | registration via link in bio) with Dina El Kaisy Friemuth, and an open-air screening (August 29 | 6:30 pm) showcasing films by Julia Charlotte Richter, Mykola Ridnyi, and Anna Zett.
