REVIEW

Raised by Cassettes says that Vlimmer's "Zerschöpfung", "just truly captures the spirit of darkwave. [...] To call this cassette "goth" would be a good idea, simply because it seems to encompass a lot of ideas which fall into that genre. At times this feels haunted, but then big beats can come in to make it feel both operatic and anthem like."

"After hearing Vlimmer enough times, it begins to feel like what you're hearing on each new cassette is just Vlimmer because it becomes more comparable to previous cassette releases than it does to other artists and sounds. [...] The sound can put me into a trance as much as it can make me want to get up and dance. Big synth bombs drop."

-Thanks, Joshua!

REVIEW

Dark Entries on the "Zerschöpfung" LP: "I continue to be amazed at the striking ease with which Alexander manages to package his seemingly inexhaustible creativity in a successful multi-layered album... As if it takes no effort at all."

"[T]he sound is quite unique in the scene and unites reverberating and delirious synths with hollow and then sharply choppy rhythms and abrasive guitar sounds. [E]lectronic and dense, synthetic dark wave songs that somehow remind us of The Cure, but also of Drab Majesty or Slowdive(band). Vlimmer seems to swallow up an amalgam of influences and spit out its own musical language that differs even album after album, but always sounds like Vlimmer."

"[T]he album exudes a certain heaviness, a claustrophobic colossus, a bottomless pit that is packaged in a bright blue cover, blue the shade of stability, intelligence and truth."

-Thanks so much, Kurt!

REVIEW

Side-Line Magazine says, "This is probably my favorite Vlimmer-album - 8/10"

"The concept sounds dark and the album takes off this way as well. After a poignant, gothic-like intro cut Vlimmer explores the darkest corners of darkwave music. [It] sounds like Vlimmer at its best. I especially enjoy the tortured atmosphere emerging at “Flurfall”. You literally feel a kind of painful expression there. Other tracks like “Platzwart” are more melodic although still exploring the dark side of life. “Fatalideal” sounds pure 80s-like and even evokes the imaginary hybrid between X Mal Deutschland and Cocteau Twins."

REVIEW

Luminous Dash says Vlimmer's "Mehrschöpfung" EP is, "for those who just want to cross the border of post-punk. Or lose the border, and then start to color even blacker outside the regular lines."

"[The tracks] are really extras that we don't immediately see fitting on previous albums, because one by one they sound very special. A little more extravagant than usual. One track because of the theatrical vocal atmosphere, the other because of the techno-leaning beats, the bizarre rhythms..."

REVIEW

Legacy - The Voice From The Dark Side on "Zerschöpfung":

"13/15 - tip! While other bands that operate at the interface of darkwave and post-punk simply provide musical accompaniment to the lyrics, Vlimmer generates a pair of sound-lyrics scissors and is therefore good for a surprise again, as in the past."

REVIEW

So proud to be part The Obelisk's Quarterly Review with "Zerschöpfung":

"... hearing off in “Makks” and “Fatalideal” taken to a place of progressive extrapolation on “Platzwort” and to hear the Author & Punisher-informed slow industrial churn of the penultimate “Todesangst” become the backdrop for a dreamy vocal like Tears for Fears if they stayed up all night scribbling in their notebook because they had so much to say."

"Vlimmer (né Alexander Leonard Donat) has had a productive run since the first numbered EPs started showing up circa 2015, and Zerschöpfung feels like a summation of the style he’s established as his own, able to speak to various sides of underground and outsider musics without either losing itself in the emotionalism of the songs or sublimating identity to genre."

REVIEW

Whisperin' & Hollerin' posts nice 8/10 "Zerschöpfung" review, talking about all nine songs. Here's an excerpt:

"The album opens with the darkly atmospheric Losig that feels like the opening music to a doomed horror film. Flurfall is a swirling dark synth goth pop with Alex's vocals feeling quite insistent amongst the repeating drum pattern with disturbing synths."

"Makks has a more stripped back feel, that almost hints at A-ha at there most gloriously poppy had they decided to go goth, the addition of the zither to the normal mix of synths and drum machines gives this a more eastern or mittel European feel."

"Todesangst is as claustrophobic and fraught as the song title might suggest, as everyone at some point suffers from Todesangst, this widespread fear of dying has only been exacerbated by the times we are in, the all-enveloping worry and distress created by the music fits the theme perfectly."

-Thanks a lot, Simon!

"OUT OF FRUSTRATION"

From the Revista The 13th interview I recently did:

Q: 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑉𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑛? 𝐼𝑛 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑉𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟?

A: "Vlimmer was born out of frustration in 2015. After putting a lot of time, effort and money into my first solo project, indie-rock band Leonard Las Vegas, which I also toured with bringing a 5-piece outfit onto the stage, releasing five albums in eight years, it kind of felt like I had nothing else to say. With “Jagmoor Cynewulf” I had recorded and released an album that turned out exactly like I wanted, and I was immensely proud of it.

When you tour, you rely on the audience’s reaction, and when you put out music you feed on the listeners’ verdict. Sadly, it felt like barely anyone was giving a s**t, and I was probably having expectations that were too high at a point in life where I was hoping to maybe become a professional musician. Luckily, I didn’t, because I think it would have limited me and my output extremely today; back then it was depressing.

Hence, I waved good-bye to making indie rock and decided to do something differently, a dark version of shoegaze, experimenting with sounds and song structures, genres like krautrock, drone and darkwave. I, in fact, did it solely for me and was immensely productive from the start, and, finally, felt totally free. When I put it on Bandcamp at the end of 2015, the listeners’ reaction blew me away! I still do not exactly know what happened, but I guess the right people were sharing it on Facebook and Soundcloud at the right time, and suddenly I found myself in the middle of the dark music scene. When I released my first two EPs, I had already recorded the music for the first five EPs. The songs wrote themselves and keep coming to this day."

-Thanks, Diego

INTERVIEW (English/Spanish)

Recently, Revista The 13th sent me some questions, and thinking about the answers I had a lot of fun digging deeper into Vlimmer.

Which songs represent the project's sound? How did it all start? What is special about the new album, "Zerschöpfung", and what has changed since the first release in 2015? and more...

-Thanks, Diego!

REVIEW

Soundmagnet, das anziehende Metalmagazin on "Zerschöpfung": "8.5/10 - dark, dense and rich [...] With his predecessor albums, Donat showed what modern darkwave has to say with its own Berlin touch and he can still build bridges."

"Especially fans of the New Wave of the early 1980s and post punk will enjoy the production and the strongly synth-dominated sound.[...] Vlimmer manages to generate his very own cosmos, which also scores points with his German-language lyrics.
The striking vocals emphasize these feelings [identity stolen, even burned or destroyed], it really brings the songs to life in all their authenticity and only shows their full effect when combined with them.

"The melodic yet dense songs bring back memories of the early The Cure, with Vlimmer imprinting his own sound on the whole thing through the production. [...] If you think you've heard everything about shoegaze / post punk and don't know Vlimmer yet, we warmly recommend you."

-Vielen Dank, Ingo!
