Pol Pi & Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop

Premiere in Germany
24., 25. & 26. February 2023

What transpires within the bodies of musicians when they play? How does the music enter the body, pe*****te it, make it vibrate, move, bring it into resonance with the score through this simultaneously inert and living object: the instrument? In "IN YOUR HEAD", choreographer Pol Pi and the soloist ensemble Kaleidoscope take on Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet, revealing an “embodied” music. Shostakovich's score finds both a musical and yet a precise, physical realisation that equally incorporates the performers' breath, movement and affects into highly personal interpretations of the piece. In the interplay between staves and gestures, solo and quartet, silence and the rhythm that links it, a subtle choreography unfolds that makes the music as visible as the movement audible.

What happens in a musician's body when she plays? How does the music invest the bodies, going through them – making them vibrate, move, act, echoing through the instrument, this object at the same time inert and alive: the instrument? The interpreter plays, the interpreter dances, an inner, concentrated, precise dance, most often invisible to the eye, except for what appears on the surface - technical gestures, twitching of the limbs, facial expressions.

IN YOUR HEAD is the first collaboration between the choreographer Pol Pi, who is also a trained musician who has long practiced the viola.
The world premiere took place in Montpellier in 2022 - this friday it will be the premiere in Germany.

„I wonder... …why we would use the term “force” to talk about music? In an intimate moment between a person and himself, a person and his surroundings, it's hard for me to imagine use these words: a strong moment. These words remind me rather associations with war, or lifting dumbbells, but certainly not related to music.“

One day my father came to see me and he said to me:
“Isa, you are going to play the cello”.
He had thought about the instrument that would suit me best.
He just said that, kindly...
as a proposal, but without really asking.
He said, "That's what you're going to do now".
And I said, “Okay, why not”.

Isabelle Klemt is member of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop since 2023. She was part of the creation of IN YOUR HEAD and performes and played cello in the French Premiere of IN YOUR HEAD, alternating the tour with Sophie Notte, who will be playing in Berlin.
