On the train back to Berlin, feeling very grateful after a wonderful and magical 2 days of performing.

I can’t explain the wonderful effect Cooper has on Kim and I. We have become a little family. 🐻🐻🐶❤️ .
The toilet breaks in the middle of the night have been a challenge- but I’m so proud of my boy … and of Cooper 😅❤️

ENJOY WHAT YOU DO.

How many times have you seen an act just “going through the motions”?

And while they’re about it, never even daring to show let alone touch the emotions, on either side of the footlights.

Fortunately, when you see Paul Middleton in concert, none of these factors are the case.

From the moment he bounded onto the stage, resplendent in a black studded jacket, red lumberjack shirt and rainbow trainers, it was clear that he had come to party…and that we were all invited.

With five albums, simply titled Covers, which have garnered over a million Spotify streams, and years of performing experience under his belt, Middleton has a wealth of musical riches to share, and swiftly set about entrancing the room with his energy, his infectious enthusiasm and, most importantly, his voice.

In this X Factor age, where too many singers think that volume and endless riffs and runs are the trick to take the prize, Middleton prefers a gentler note bound approach.

There is a slightly hazy huskiness to his tone, which blesses his performance with a tenderness and vulnerability, even on the more uptempo numbers, and which sits affectingly at odds with his proudly worn “bear” persona.

A recent professional diversion into t-shirt design, celebrating the glorious diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community, whilst also underlining his commitment to addressing mental health awareness is echoed within his choice of material.

It takes a brave man to take on the classic “Careless Whisper”, a braver one to gently alter that well-known melody, and a strong man to introduce the song with a memory of personal heartbreak over a failed relationship.

This is Middleton’s greatest strength.

To take well-known songs, musically personalise the material, and share both the joy and the pain within the story, stripped off artifice, and going straight to the heart of the truth.

His other notable talent is knowing how to work a room, with his engaging personality, boundless energy, ability to communicate and involve the audience, sometimes dividing the room in a vocal competition, encouraging clapping, dancing, singing along, even straying into the audience to further the connection.

And it all works.

We are too used to seeing gigs in huge arenas, where there is often such a distance between singer and listener that it is easy to feel distanced and unengaged, and it was a refreshing change to see the twinkle in the eye, the winning smile and the sweat on the brow of a man who clearly loves his job.

I particularly enjoyed the heartbusting tenderness of “Make You Feel My Love”, the gentle swing of “Ocean Drive”, the full-on funk of “Get Down On It”, and the controlled vocal acrobatics of “Take On Me.”

I also admired his generosity of spirit to invite his supporting performers to join him onstage for a joyful version of “Shine.”

Middleton is a touchingly open performer, never shying away from thanking his audience not only for attending his shows and listening to his music, but also for supporting him on his journey as an artist, and possibly more importantly, as a human being.

He is currently preparing his first album of original material, which I am more than a little excited to hear.

Whilst an evening of cover versions was never anything less than engaging and extremely enjoyable, I am fascinated to hear what stories he can tell from his personal experience, that someone somewhere has waited all their life to hear.

I know that it will be worth the wait.

I woke up today with a heart full of love🥰! Last night was a new career highlight. Im buzzing! A huge HUGE thank you to every person that came to watch last night. You made my night - seeing your beautiful faces enjoying, singing and dancing was everything. It’s something I will keep in my heart for the rest of my life. ❤️
Thank you for believing in me and stepping out your door to come down and support. To those that travelled far and wide (I had someone travel from Belgium and Wales to come and watch- thank you ❤️)

I had some self doubt and anxiety about last night. I have been told in the past that male vocalists/singers have no place in the community! It has been frustrating to try and contribute and be a part of the community and represent but last night showed me that there is space for a variety of acts.
Thank you for the well wishes and support online on social media - I’m super grateful. 🙏🏼❤️Thank you to my special guests , and for bringing your superb talent and charm and wit and making the evening a success- love you guys and our little moment on stage together!
